G. L. Pease Sixpence

(3.30)
You enter the dark paneled room, its walls lined with ancient books. An antique table stands beside a leather club chair. Upon it, next to a small silver coin, an open tobacco tin entices you with an aroma deep, rich, authentic. You fill your bowl, strike a match. The first puff stops time as the smoky magic weaves its spell... Sixpence. The mystery continues.
Notes: First batch tinned October 15, 2014 and released November 21, 2014. On that date, Mr. Pease wrote: After a longer than expected wait, I'm happy to announce that Sixpence is now wending its way to tobacconists' shelves. A rich flake comprising a base of beautiful red virginias, a generous portion of perique, and just a bit of dark-fired leaf to add body and dimension. The tobaccos are delicately kissed with a special spirit, then pressed and aged in cakes before being sliced and tinned. The taste and aroma are deep, full and satisfying, reminiscent of traditional tobaccos from long ago. I'm very excited about the release, as I'm sure you can imagine. I've been working on Sixpence for a long time, and am beyond pleased with it. It's one of those rare moments when everything comes together and the final blend actually exceeded the expectations I began the journey with. It's been a long journey. I had something special in mind when I began this project, something that would hold the smoker's interest throughout the bowl, developing increasing nuances with each puff, while not fatiguing the palate or building too much intensity. The leaf has been carefully selected and composed to perfect harmony from first light to the wonderful crescendo of the last puff. Virginia lovers craving a tobacco that is bold and robust, as well as devotées of latakia mixtures who enjoy virginias as a change of pace will find their reward in every bowl of Sixpence.

Will start of by saying that this is the best tobacco ive ever had straight from the tin, I find it very complex from the get go. Except from the plums, very spicy notes and grahams, half bowl in I get a complex salmiak note, the one you get from some fine blue cheeses, I get that this is from the anis. But there is more to it. Further down on the retro hale it developes to the complex surface of tenderised meat/ the light moldy surface on prosciutto, which is a very good thing.

I find it hard callaring this stuff as I cant keep my hands from it. Time will only do magic for this showstopper.

A very good blend from Mr Pease. Upon opening of the tin, you'll get a nice smell of rum hitting your nostrils. The moisture level is a bit on the high side, so you may need to let it dry out for some time. Lighting up is not a problem right out of the tin though. It has a nice rounded flavoring with all the components working nicely together. Definitely recommended.

This is a delicious blend from Pease, and it is the best burning flake I have ever tried, delivering voluminous amounts of smoke. The Virginias may lack the tang and fruitiness I was expecting, but the Perique fills that gap and, with the smoky Kentucky and topping, it delivers a consistently sweet/figgy flavor with a light, sinus-clearing kick.

The nicotine is very satisfying and surprisingly potent for a medium-bodied blend. It pairs beautifully with bourbon. I'm not sure what the topping is, but it essentially matches the aforementioned elixir perfectly. Also mates well with Troeg's Hopback Amber Ale.

It's an atypical VaPer, decidedly smoky-sweet, and a new favorite. I am amazed at how deftly Greg is blending these crossover blends. This and The Virginia Cream -- yes, a Pease aromatic! -- are must tries. Better in a wider-bored chamber.

Six pence is an ok tobacco, but it has nothing that triggered or maintained my enthusiasm. The casing was nice, the tobacco was of a nice medium brown colour. What is odd is that Six pence smelled a lot like other tobaccos such as Navigator or Triple Play, for example; I'm thinking maybe it is the DFK or simply the anti fungus agent that C & D uses? The smoking did not unveil a tobacco that really has any complexity or develops significantly as I progressed through my bowls. Nicotine was medium, medium to strong. After having smoked two tins, it was enjoyable but not to the point where I would want to buy it again.

This one rates high on the Scoville Scale. It leaves my oral cavity burning like I've eaten chilli. I suspect the tablets have altered my chemical balances.

Shame. I get the impression that this is a really good baccy. But I can only give it two stars because I just can't tell.

Anyone want the 49 grams that are left?

Coincidence, I guess, that 2014 brought both Sixpence and Savinelli's fantastic Doblone d'Oro, again pitting Mac Baren's dark fired Kentucky against Cornell & Diehl's.

Sixpence smokes like Pease didn't have any faith in the tobacco. The topping is sour and alcoholic. Everyone talks about strange flavors. They've doused Sixpence in something that detracts mightily, which is the same thing C&D did to Bourbon Bleu the next year. Compare to Sav's entry: pure tobacco flavor, excellent, simple, trusting that the quality leaf will speak for itself.

I'm not convinced that Va/Bur/Per is improved by subbing in or adding Kentucky leaf anyway - Motzek's Strang was universally loved and it was fine with smooth Burley.

Anyway, if you have a good tolerance for weird off-flavored toppings, give Sixpence a go!

I´m having a hard time to understand Vapers, but they are growing on me, don´t know if enough to add them to my smoking routine, but, they are growing. I´m always remarking this in my reviews - I´m a new pipe smoker - and hence unexperienced in many aspects of smoking pipe tobacco. I´m still getting used to the tobaccos and, while I appreciate the virginias I´m still not sure about how I like perique. Some blends with Little perique are delightful, but vapers are blends to watch. Of the three vapers I´ve tasted this is by far the best one of them - and the one that is initiating my interest on going forward and trying more Vapers.

A nicely done broken flakes with very bright and very dark leaves.

The smell out of the pouch (it was a sample I got), is overwhelmingly vinegary and slightly peppery. Nothing too impressive I thought.

Filling a Morel flower pipe dedicated to Va/Pers with Kentucky and lighting. First impressions were a strong taste of pepper and an unpleasant nose tingling. Admittedly, I went like a vacuum cleaner on the first smokes. So I tempered a bit, and went on slowly to discern the tastes.

It's a mini Perique bomb for sure. Lots of pepper, some bell-peppers, but also a caress of sweetness and "delicatesse" thanks to the red Virginias.

Nose tingling continues to a lesser extent, so I try to smoke it even slower. Then I was able to get the taste of the DF Kentucky that really rounds the overall mixture. I can now feel the mélange as a true blend. The marriage of the aromas is really pleasant. A medium-strong blend that Pease says has liquor... Honestly, I can't detect any liquor nor what it is.

However, it feels like an out of ordinary blend, that I appreciate. But not enough to keep it in my regular rotation.

Here are my two cents!

Based on the tin description I was expecting something bold and decadent but I found it too surprisingly mellow for a GL Pease blend.

The broken flake was surprisingly dry when I opened the tin. I say ‘surprisingly’ because many reviews I read described this as being very moist in the tin.

I broke down the already broken flake the first few bowls but in my experience, it doesn’t need it to light well. It just just helps with having to constantly tamp as the leaves expand from the lighting and relighting.

It smokes well, burns well, and doesn’t give me any bite.

I’ve been on a ODK kick lately and while I CAN taste the Kentucky it’s the most mild of any dark fired Kentucky blend I’ve smoked. Even more mild than St. Bruno Flake, which I would consider to be an all day smoke.

That’s not to say that it’s not good, it is very good. It just doesn’t match the tin description. Dark Paneled room??

Back to the smoke. The perique is spicy and delicious on the retrohale, the ODK is present but more in the background. The red Virginia to me, is the star of the show, especially when smoked on a small narrow bowl.

It has an almost vinegar like taste. Like a very bready fish and chips with malt vinegar.

I’m not good with describing toppings. It almost reminds me of Haddo’s delight but I quite frankly hated the topping in that blend and only enjoyed that leaf after years of cellaring when the topping mostly disappeared.
