Kohlhase, Kopp und Co. KG No. 66

(2.67)
This Danish Kohlhase & Kopp's Pipe 66 tobacco has been a huge hit with aromatic pipe smokers. Upon opening this attractive casket you are greeted with a very pleasant aroma. Kohlhase & Kopp's Pipe 66 is a blend of double fermented black cavendish, hand torn dark flake and vibrant bright Virginia. This cool smooth yet lively blend has an American style feel to it. The fruity mélange of aromas and flavours imparted by casing give this blend a sticky moist to the touch feel and its overtones are smoked throughout the bowl. This excellent blend can be enjoyed straight from the tin although some smokers may prefer to dry it out a little before lighting up.

Kohlase & Kopp - Pipe 66.

Upon opening this I can see straight away it's in need of airing, it isn't soaked but it needs a moderate amount of time to minimize the water in it. The aroma from it is very Blackcurrant-esc, from the smell I imminently think to myself "this isn't one for non aromatic smokers"! The mixture contains a higher proportion of Black Cavendish to Virginia, it's about a 75%-25% split. There are some broken flakes in there but they don't require any extra rubbing, they are a great size to burn right away.

Once it's had time to air it lights well giving a cool smoke from the word 'go'. All the way through the burn is stable, it only needs sporadic touches with the tamper to maintain it. The flavour of the smoke is a 'very berry' one with a sharpness from the alcohol in there. To be fair, as the topping is very sweet and full it's tricky to discern the two different tobacco flavours, I know there is sweet black Cav' in there but I'm a bit like "was that sweetness from the Cav' or the liqueur?". This really is a blend for flavour only folks, even with a huge inhalation I find it tricky to get nicotine satisfaction! The room note is pleasing, there is a great berry addition to it.

If you don't like sticky/gloopy aromatics and you spy this on the shelf STEP BACK but if you want the quintessential heavy aro' I think Pipe 66 will serve you well!

Three stars.
