D & R Tobacco English Hoopla
(3.14)
English Hoopla is a Daughters & Ryan English/aromatic crossover blend where the aromatic elements, anisette and vanilla, play a small role. The main show is the blend itself, a mixture of Latakia, Oriental, and Virginia that is smoky, woody, and grassy — in that order.
Notes: This full English blend was Mark Ryan's entry in the Chicagoland International Pipe & Tobacciana Show blending competition. Ryan described the contents as " ...heavy latakia, oriental and virginia tobaccos. Topped with anisette and light vanilla flavors."

This full English blend is probably the best introduction English blend I've ever run across. Make no mistake, it is a full English! But the tin and smoke note would never make you guess it. Mark Ryan has created another delicious traditional pipe tobacco blend with the help of some creamy, dark, and rich Latakia and Virginias lightly cased with anise and vanilla. These casings do not make it an aromatic, nor do you really even taste them. They balance the hearty amount of Latakia and orientals into a smooth and delicious blend with a slightly sweet "room note". There is never a tongue bite, nor do I ever get board with it.
I would highly recommend this to a brand new English smoker, or to anyone who prefers sweet over smokey complements to their English blends.

I've now smoked a half dozen bowls since buying this at the Chicagoand Pipe Show. As it happens, I have solely smoked it in a bent SMS lattice Meerschaum that I picked up at the same show. I'm delighted with the combo. Burns very cool and dry with few relights and burns well close to the bottom of the bowl without getting bitter. No bite. I think this it's due on part to the perfect moisture level of the tobacco out of the tin, which is relatively low and makes this easy to pack properly. This makes this blend a fair value, too. As for flavor, it's a mellow English, with just the right amount of smoky Latakia. This one it's going to be a regular for me. I'll also be trying other blends from D&R.
