Sutliff Tobacco Company Sweet Virginia #707

(3.18)
Sutliff Sweet Virginia is a delight for Virginia fans. This is a broken flake that burns well, and the chunky cut keeps it from getting overly hot as long as you don't puff furiously. Notes of hay, grass, citrus, and honey are all noticeable in this pleasantly straightforward blend of flue-cured tobaccos.
Notes: Bright Virginia tobaccos pressed and tumbled out, naturally sweet.

I'm not normally a fan of straight VAs, but this one is really nice - just a little natural sweetness, but none of the "sharpness" that I normally get from VAs. Burned well; no relights required throughout the bowl, and vitamin N is subtle.

Bulk. A bit moist so I dried it a bit. Bag notes of hay and sweet sugar. I get a bit of earth and citrus also. I like to rub it out a bit before packing. Initial notes of creamy coffee, bread and sugar. Some hay and some citrus develop. The mild sweetness stays usually until mid bowl. I recommend a small bowl for this as the flavours can get a bit muddled towards the end of a large bowl. Slow to moderate cadence is required to avoid tongue bite. Mild nic hit. This is an easy smoking virginia. Very pleasant and very recommended.

Light, maple sweet, slightly creamy, high quality bright virginia that will make a good smoke on its own or as a blender to add that extra sweetness to a blend. For anyone curious, Sutliff does not make this nor do they make a majority of their flakes like virginia slices, mocha strips, etc. They are outsourced and made in Denmark by mac baren. Sutliff has stated they don't have the equipment to produces flakes like this. Having both this and Mac Baren Virginia no1, I'm fairly confident 707 and no1 are the same thing. 707 is almost 20 dollars a pound cheaper currently

Mild and sweet straight Virginia broken flake. Love this stuff! Would recommend to any who likes Virginia. Smokes cool and smooth, lightly sweet like sugar and honey. Also great for blending. No downsides I can detect.

Jar note of spices, sweet fruit, and hay. Tobacco looks like a ready rub or tumbled out flake. The orangish tan and brown tobacco is on the dry side and rub out easily, no dying needed. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and consistent, with complex notes of lemon zest, wood, sweet grass, spicy, earth, floral, very bread, tangy stewed fruit, herbal spice, a sweet hay like background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is great.

I use this all the time for blending and tweaking and wouldn’t be without it. The only possible drawback as a blending tobacco is that it comes like chunky broken flake, so that makes it difficult to integrate into some finer ribbon cut blends. As a solo smoke I don’t find it so interesting, but I have a half pint jar of this from 2017 sealed tight to see how it develops.

Baggie/jar note of marshmallow, vanilla, honey, and hay, which already speaks of the influence of the casing. So even without added flavoring this is clearly not unprocessed natural leaf. Smokes more like a golden Virginia than the darker color that it is. Flavors of dried ‘sweet’ grass, with some bready flavors that remind me of Southern biscuits, a mellow fruity note like yellow Mirabelle plum (similar to but less sweet than yellow raisin), something like honey-baked cashew, and very mild tickle of white pepper on the retrohale.

Not bad as a solo smoker, it burns cool and steady, and my pipe barely even gets warm. It will also probably develop more depth as it ages. As a blending Virginia I find it indispensable.
