Smoker's Pride Rich Taste
(3.15)
Rich Taste is a smooth blend of flue cured and air cured tobaccos, with real tobacco taste but a gentle enough flavor to smoke all day. It also makes a very good blending tobacco.

This is one of those things you see at the Low Bob's. I have tried many of these bargain blends in my pipe, and I keep them in the office for the homeless who know I smoke and wonder if I might be able to let them "have a little 'baccy." This one is easily the best of the bulks at the RYO shops I have found for the pipe. It is a very smokeable basic burley blend if you are on a budget.
This is not complex or multidimensional. It comes as a long narrow ribbon and slightly more dry than you might expect in a pipe tobacco. Smoked, it is a slightly sweet, slightly sour burley with a little nuttiness. It is consistent in flavor, and I smoke it straight out of the bag with no additional hydration. I pack it a little tight. It burns well and is an easy smoke. It stays lit and does not require much attention. It can be found for $7.95 a pound online.
If I were on a fixed income, this would probably be my goto smoke. This is a good smoke at a great price - recommended. This is a 3.5 on the scale in that I will buy/smoke it by the pound.
Edit 8/14/15 Changing room note to "pleasant." My daughter walked in the den and said "Hey Dad, what is that you are smoking? It smells great!"

A very straight forward, mostly burley product. It's a little nutty, earthy and toasty with a light woodiness. The Virginia is far in the background as a minor player; grassy with a bare citrus hit. There's not that much sweetness present, though I get the slightest cocoa note along a natural burley sweetness. A sour hit pops up here and there. I smoked it dry as that's how it is in the bag, but with a little hydration, it's a smoother, cooler smoke that reveals more of the flavors that I have mentioned in this review, so I recommend adding a little moisture for best effect. Hydrated, it burns at a reasonable rate with no dullness and a consistent taste, and leaves no wetness in the bowl. Dry, it may sport a slight harshness if you puff like a marathon finalist. Dry or moist, it requires few relights. Won't bite. Low nic-hit. It is a very one dimensional no-frills burley-forward product that some may find boring, but it does well as an all day work and play smoke that you don't have to think about a lot when you're producing clouds of smoke. Normally, I would rate this at two stars as rated against other manufactures in this genre, but there's a lot of good to be said for this kind of inexpensive blend that gives just what it's designed to, so it gets three stars.

My dad smokes this as his RYO in one of those pull / push type cig rollers and the quality is light years above the mass produced cigs by the major tobacco companies since it doesn't contain all those nasty chemicals that assist the burn.. Well he was rolling today in the living room and i keep a Missouri Meerschaum Hardwood County Gentleman on the table just in case i forget my pipe. I loaded her up with SPR slightly tight as it was kinda dry and lit her up. A Prince Albert type smoke (with a minuscule amount of VA, Burley forward with hints of Virginia and that's it, nice enough nic hit and actually quite tasty! Toasty Burley flavor kinda like a Lucky Strike or Daughters and Ryan Two Timer. He pays $10 a pound so it's an amazing value and is one of a handful RYO tobacco's that can truly be used in a pipe without tasting like crap to put it mildly.

Ok I'm going to let my redneck, hillbilly side show. I love this stuff! From the first bowl. It is nothing more than a Virginia, burley blend that goes in a pipe really well or a RYO tobacco. There are no flavorings, top dressings or PG to obstruct the flavors of the tobacco. When I got the first bowl lit it took a minute but when the flavor hit my tongue I couldn't believe it. I bought 2 pounds of this for less than $20. It is what people smoked generations ago. It does burn a little hot due to the Virginias in it. I've learned to take it a little slower than with most tobaccos. As you can tell I love the flavor of this tobacco. It comes a little dry but if you add moisture it should calm down and be incredible. Buy a small pouch first and see if you like it before you go whole hog as I did. This is a basic tobacco for those not into English blends or aromatics. All you get is 100% pure burley and Virginia to sit back and enjoy without having to pay and arm and a leg.

This is as straight-forward a blend as you going to find. My guess is that it's mostly white Burley with a small amount of Virginia. It was very dry indeed upon arrival so I rehydrated it in a jar I have for that purpose (this tobacco is physically very thin). The taste is surpisingly cool and I also give it high marks on the burn - very easy to keep lit. The cut is mostly ribbon. This may please you if you're a Prince Albert fan. Otherwise It's very plain with no surprises. Even the jar aroma is nice, but subdued. I don't think I'll be buying this again.

Very dry upon receipt, but I find it smokes better a little dry than a little moist. Played around with blending some with Dark Red and after some aging it was an improvement.
