Tom Eltang English
(2.54)
Featuring an impeccable balance of red and bright Virginias, exotic Latakia, and a dash of Katerini, Eltang English is a mild, highly nuanced smoke, crafted to become a most favored all day blend.
Notes: This blend is being released on September 17, 2014 at Tom Eltang's house in Denmark. Per Mr. Eltang: For some time now (about the past 15 years or so…) I have been playing with the idea of blending my own tobacco as a natural extension of my craft. Finally this happens - through the help and guidance of Sykes Wilford, Smokingpipes.com and the American Pipe Tobacco Manufacture, Cornell & Diehl tobaccos.

This was an interesting blend. It's less an English and more of a Virginia with a tiny dash of lat added. The Katerini is clearly in there, it's evident in the tin note, but I wasn't able to pick it out, it's definitely a supporting player. The blend of the red and bright Virginias seems very even, as the spicy or sweet front notes seemed to alternate bowl to bowl. This seems like it would be an excellent blend for a Virginia lover wanting to explore latakia blends, or anyone looking for latakia well in the background of their smoke. The latakia is clearly the same leaf as Pirate Kake's, with a less smoky flavor and a bit of soap at first taste, but the blending is radically different, and it's kept well under control throughout. As a latakia fiend I'll probably reach for something a bit heavier on a regular basis, but I'll keep this one in the rotation for the days when I just want a little. Definitely one to smoke slow, to bring out the full taste of the Virginias.

This is as good as any traditional English blend I've tried and it deserves some recognition.
It's definitely made of high quality leaf, blended very nicely to make a nice, mild, but tasty traditional English blend. Certainly not a "Lat-bomb" by any stretch, but there's still just enough Latakia there to make it worthwhile. It burns evenly, into a fine ash.
It reminds me a little of a cross between Sutliff's CD Blend, and Fox's Dorisco Mixture (minus the Perique). Give it a try, I don't think you'll regret it (unless you exclusively like Latakia heavy/Balkan-like blends).

I like to keep my reviews short as I am no connoisseur.
I got my free sample from smokingpipes as others. And I am glad I received one. The smell is quite amazing I must say but I have to mention that I was a little intimidated by it as I am not used to strong blends. What a surprise, even though the smell and taste of it exceptional, it is very mild. I am at middle of the bowl, and still no sign of lady N. Seems like this is a true European.
I think I would enjoy this in a morning pipe. I think I will buy a tin or two in the future. Recommended to all.

This is a deep tasting blend, that is smooth, balanced, and tastes of its components. The truth is it doesn't deserve a bunch of 2 star ratings. Maybe everyone thinks it's need Burley or Perique or more of one individual component. If you have smoked enough bland English blends you'd know this is not one. Different tastes for everyone I suppose.
