I have never had the pleasure of trying the original Flying Dutchman, but this version is something tasty with a great room note. I found my bulk purchase to be on the moist side, which makes it burn a little hot in the pipe. However I dried a bowl overnight, and this problem was mostly gone. Oddly enough it didn't bite either way. The flavor is fairly light, and I can taste the "herbal" quality that so many note. The aftertaste is of this, and it increases as you smoke. To me this herbal taste is increased due to the fermented taste of the cavendish and the overall moisture of the tobacco. The room note is amazing.. in some ways similar to Sir Walter Raleigh aromatic but much smoother and less smoky. It's really like nothing else. Produces a large amount of smoke. Overall I think this could be a 4 star tobacco for me if it would just come at a more reasonable moisture level. I have noticed this with Sutliff products, they almost have an oily quality that is hard to dry. It does tend to leave some dottle for me unless I'm careful (and I usually smoke to ash) but with careful packing and tamping this is not an issue.

I must've picked up 4oz of something different than everyone else, 'cause this is fantastically average. Not only is it mildly sweet in its mediocrity, it burned hot for me. I didn't care for it at all. Reminds me a lot of Golden Extra personally. Just a hint of honeyish. Arrived with perfect moisture, smoked well, and burned even. Glad I gave it a whirl in my codger trials. I sealed about 5 or so bowls worth up in a little glass sample vial, (thanks QC department), for the future in case I want to try again.

When I first started smoking a pipe back in 1973 I tried Holiday and Flying Dutchman. I hated both. Some of that may have been my neophyte technique with the pipe. It may have been the cheap pipe. It may have been the tobaccos. No way to tell 50 years down the road.

I do remember that Flying Dutchman was hotter than Hades. Scorched my mouth good.

But hoping that technique had improved and maybe Sutliff's match was better than the original, I took a gamble.

Well, I still like the smell of Flying Dutchman. It's pretty delicious.

As for the taste, well that's the thing: it was pretty tasteless to these old tastebuds. There was no bite or mouth burn. But I just didn't taste anything. Hot leaves? Not even that.

I tried it in a Missouri Meerschaum corncob and a Charatan Mayfair prince. In the Charatan it did border on the nasty side.

On my personal rating system, I gave it a "D" because of the Charatan experience. Otherwise a "C".

Reading the reviews, obviously others find it has flavor. So maybe it's my tongue.

I'll give it 2 stars. You try it and tell us what you think.

Like many others, I never had the chance to get burned by the original from the many comments on it and here. However, a few years ago I picked up an empty large tin at a flea market since I liked the old style tin art. Like many of those old blends, at the time.. I really didn't put much thought into trying it.

I picked up a small bulk sample of the match when placing an order and put it back to try when I wanted to smoke a cob pipe which is usually my go to for aros.

The "bag note" was faintly sweet and the cut was mostly darker tobaccos with some lighter ones here and there. The moisture level seemed fine but it had "aged" in the ziplock and maybe dried out a little bit.

Easy to pack and light. Takes quickly to flame. Wants to burn hot so requires some thought as to smoking cadence. When sipped, it has a sweetish taste which I'd guess is vanilla. Towards the back half of the bowl, I pick up the "herbal taste" which is also prevalent in a fairly strong aftertaste which lingers. Room note is non offensive to the wife.

It's one of those blends to be that isn't mind-shattering but also has enough flavor to be an enjoyable smoke. I jarred up the rest and put it with the other mild aros for when I reach for a cob, but probably not something I'll buy again.

(3/5) Smooth consistent flavor throughout the smoke, with sweet hints of hay and flowers. Pleasant room notes that don’t linger too long. Pairs well with water, but coffee overpowers the tobacco. A mild smoke, best enjoyed in the morning or early evening before a meal.

This match was interesting. I never had Flying Dutchman back in the day, but had always wanted to try it. It was hard to find in the USA (at least where I was at the time). The various reviews here at TR suggest the match isn't quite what was available many years ago—nevertheless, onward I tread.

Others insist on a licorice and vanilla aspect to this baccy. My tastebuds tell me differently. The bag note had a slight berry scent. I could detect some vanilla, but I could swear to some alcohol additive. Taste wise, this perceived alcohol additive reminded me of apricot brandy. If forced, this blend will nip, so a slower cadence is required. The blend is slightly sharp and sweet. Not too pleasing on the front end, but the snork was very interesting, and somewhat unusual—it was the saving grace, for me.

I really enjoy trying matches of the old blends. I doubt this matches well with the original (again, this is based on those who had tried the original), nevertheless, there must be something left over from the original, or they wouldn't call it a match. No regrets trying this, but it's not something I'll keep in stock.

Keep on pipin'

This stuff is funky in all the right ways. It's a medium bodied aromatic that smokes very cool and dry. I have never tried the original but cantbelieve it does this very unique flavor better than the match.

Mild nic, sweet dessert smoke that is unlike any aromatic I've tried. I haven't seen anyone else mention it but there is a good portion of perique in here, or sutliff had a perique flavoring that is indistinguishable from the real thing. Next to a jar of pure perique the blue cheese/fish sauce smell of perique is definitely a player in flying dutchman and it works wonderfully.

If you love aromatics but are overwhelmed or bored with the 100's of seemingly identical ones on the market, give this a try.
