Peretti Pride of Loch Lomond

(3.56)
A truly outstanding tobacco blended in the old Scottish Tradition, developing an unusual mellow mist. It is very complex and full bodied.

I got a 1 ounce sample of this tobacco from LJ Peretti and man to I wish I had gotten more! Upon opening the pouch I was greeted with a rich, spicy, oriental aroma. Absolutely delicious smelling. Bright colored, ribbon cut tobacco with just the right amount of moisture packed easily into my african block meerschaum and lit right up. It burned through with one relite. No muss, no fuss. The orientals are certainly out in front for taste but latakia is certainly there while perique gives it a nice backdrop flavor. If you have ever had Presbyterian Mixture this is similar. I just found it to be more robust where PM is more mellow. My better half, and professional "room note evaluator," puts the RM at "tolerable." I smoked it all the way through with a wonderful complexity of flavors from the blend of orientals, latakia and bit of spice added by the perique lasting the whole way. A truly fine tobacco which I whole heartedly recommend for lovers of Scottish/English, or Oriental blends. This will be added to my personal cellar.

I smoke a lot of LJ Peretti's tobacco's, and there's so many that I truly love, but Pride is my all-time favorite. It's complex and deeply satisfying. I don't mean to sound vague, but it's difficult to characterize. If you use a pipe that is not ghosted I believe you'll taste some very unique, enjoyable tobacco.

Peretti's - Pride Of Loch Lomond

This was the most moist of the five Peretti's blends I recently picked up.  Still smoke-able straight from the satchel though.  Virginia tang is prominent in the jar note.  This is a rich, full bodied, complex and nuanced smoke.  The main event, flavor wise, is toasty - earthy, with notes of coffee and dark chocolate.  At times this blend takes on tones of a good Honduran cigar. At other times it smokes more like a va/p from the darker end of that spectrum. The perique tingle is in effect, not too spicy though, some sweetness is there but it's subtle and subdued. I can't taste the latakia as a separate component although I can pull the individual flavors from the others.  They all come together very nicely no matter which way the overall taste of the blend shifts as a whole.  Nicotine hit is about medium.  Fast smoking will turn it bitter, but when smoked at a reasonable pace this is an interesting and rewarding mixture.

Well, you take the high road and I’ll take the low road with the wee bonnie bowl of L.J. Perretti’s Pride of Loch Lomond.

A complex and mellow traditional Scottish blend of Latakia, Turkish, Virginia and Perique.

The base taste profile is a full-bodied smoky, oak-ish, softly sweetened, balanced fling of distinct recipe varietal flavor. POLL is also colored by a spiritous regalia of wonderfully forward earthy Oriental spice and just a wee dance of Perique pepper cavorting in the rear. Tis pure dead brilliant as my Highland ancestors would say. The drone tones coming from me pipe (in this case briar versus bag) make a lovely chorus.

Happy Friday may ye troubles be short, ye blessings be tall and lang may ye pipes reek!

This is.... fine? As a "Scottish" I can't say it rings any bells - it lacks the things I'd consider critical in a Scottish mixture (light latakia and the use of cavendish?). What's really astonishing is that none of the reviews mention the overwhelming soap/rosewater/Thrills flavoring. It's not offensive, but it's... pervasive. Obvious and almost dominat. I couldn't pick this apart in terms of component tobaccos, and as far as orientals go it's basically nothing like any of the Rattray's or McConnel blends. So how is it Scottish again? Its a weird muddle, pleasant enough, but to me it's genre-less. It's okay, not any kind of benchmark (as many Peretti's blends indeed are benchmarks). A strange one. Enjoyable but not a re-order for me.

I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon this entirely by chance. Trusting to Peretti and the name of the blend, I took a chance with my first Peretti blend. Ordered an 8 oz tin and OMGILOVEIT! So easy. I set a bowlful out to dry for 10 minutes, then load up. Equally delightful in my largest bowl, a Gefapip Giant Lumberman and just now, my smallest bowl, a Blatter & Blatter Churchwarden to finish the evening. Many others have described it much better than I could; I’ll just say I have already reordered it by the lb. and will continue to do so. I have found my first deep stock for the cellar. ...ok, i will say a little more: With my first bowl, i thought, would I change this? Perhaps add some matured Virginia? But with more bowls, no way. Great as is. Very much look forward to any development with aging. As Mikey famously used to say “try it, you’ll like it!” P.S. my wife, who grew up not far from the shores of Loch Lomond, says the room note is of midges, with a hint of thistle. 🙂
