Peretti London Flake
(2.96)
Pre-2018 version: "Made of orange and red Virginia which has a dash of St. James Perique giving it a deep and satisfying flavor. It is a dark matured flake which smokes smooth and cool."
New (March 2018): "One of the most popular blends in flakes is found here in this Virginia/Perique flake. The orange and lemon Virginias provide a nice level of sweetness which is well complimented by the spicy kick of the perique."
Notes: Prior to 2018, London Flake was sourced from McClelland. This re-release was introduced in March, 2018 and is a different blend from a different source.

No experience with the pre 2018 version so this is a standalone review for the post 2018 flake. Tin note is sweet with some caramel and molasses like aromas. Grassy and a sour note as well. Not a particularly flavorful smoke for me. Very young is my overall impression, I will likely put this down for awhile. The smoke is extremely light and grassy, earthy and vegetal. I do not really detect the Perique at all, except perhaps in the mouth feel. There is a tannic element in the smoke that I think comes from the Perique. The smoke did not change from start to finish. As a young leaf this may just need time to develop, or maybe this one is just flat and light as a blend. As smoked now this is a 1.5 for me but it is quality leaf so I will bump it to 2...for now.

The smell in the tin is the typical vinegar or catsup of McClelland Va., but slightly muted. I suspect that it was prepared for Peretti's by McClelland because it is almost if not identical to McClelland's #2015. However, it does seem to be a bit smoother and a little less nippy. This is a beautiful Virginia/Perique tobacco. There are no artificial flavors or sweeteners that I can detect. The dominant flavor is the sweetness of a McClelland Virginia flake combined with the tang of Perique at the back of the tongue. If you like Virginia/Perique tobacco and you like McClelland #2015, you will probably find this tobacco a step up. It requires slow, typical Virginia puffing and burns evenly all the way to the dottle with very little tending. However, if price is a consideration, I think you will find #2015 just as satisfying. Paddy.

I got this because I wanted to try a new V/P flake. It was bought at the Peretti b&m in Boston for me by a friend.
Long thin sliced flakes of a mostly light color. The moisture content is just about perfect and the paint can is a really cool packaging for pipe tobacco. It smells delicious. Grassy and sweet aroma with a spicy date-like note to it. It takes a bit of rubbing to work it out. It lights up easily and smokes very well. It does have some sour tangy notes to the taste, but it is well balanced by the perique. The sweetness of the Virginia really shines in this. The flavor stays fairly consistent throughout the smoke. Overall, this is a pleasant and interesting flavor experience.
I didn’t need many relights, but that’s me. A lighter pack, 80% rubbed out and with a narrower bowl was the only way I smoked this. The nic content is satisfying enough, but maybe a touch on the mild side of medium for me. I prefer stronger blends generally.
This one is a winner. It’s very well done and readily available online for purchase. It is a bit pricey, I payed $55 for a 1/4 lb at the time of writing this. It should be cheaper online, but there’s still shipping to consider. Well worth buying if you’re interested in this kind of blend.
