Peretti Blend D-7485
(3.58)
A masterpiece of the blender's art. A rich, spicy blend that lends itself to gracious living. A luxury tobacco which is cool and mild. Made originally for the late Hon. Ramsay MacDonald. A blend that lends itself to gracious living. D-7485 blends a number of tobaccos to provide a cool, mild smoke. It is considered by many to be a perfect "all day" smoke.
Notes: "Blend D-7485. On April 24th 1933, The Honorable Ramsey MacDonald, Prime Minister of Great Britain arrived at the L.J. Peretti Co. accompanied by Bennett, the premier of Canada and Edouard Herriot, the Prime Minister of France. Mr. MacDonald, who had heard of Peretti's reputation in the pipe tobacco world, requested a blend that bridged the English and American styles. After two months of experimentation, the blenders at Peretti created D-7485. This burley and Virginia mixture has depth, smoothness, and a touch of latakia spice. Mr. MacDonald continued to order 'his blend' for the rest of his days."
"D-7485 (c.1930) Burley, Virginia, Oriental, Latakia."

I was introduced to this tobacco seven years ago or more by a fellow pipeman I worked with and I've had it in my rotation ever since. Opening the package from Peretti one is greeted with a nutty aroma and followed quickly by the smoky Latakia. Tobacco colors are mostly browns speckled with yellow and black. Tobacco packs well and does better with a brief drying out period. Lights easily, sometimes not requiring much effort after the charring light. Aroma is of really good quality tobacco. Enjoying this blend seems to put me in a relaxed and contemplative state. When ordering from Peretti I would recommend allowing the tobacco to rest a few weeks before enjoying - seems to improve the marriage of the flavors. Will keep this one around all the time.

Oldmanpipe's review, below, has got it right.
British PMs notwithstanding, this is more of an American blend than English. The predominant flavor is that of burley with just a whiff of latakia. An interesting change of pace and certainly a bit different than the usual blend catergories.

Not big on English blends but I do like to use them from time to time as a change from my favorite Va/P flakes, so, when I read that this was enjoyed by a British Prime Minister I wanted to see what it was all about.
For me, this is a typical English blend. Somewhat similar to other English blends I have smoked, notably Dunhill's London Mixture and Peretti's British Blend although milder and tangier than both of those. I placed it in the "very mild" category, milder than other reviewers and I attribute that to the fact that I am used to the stronger VA/P flakes. Nevertheless it is very tasty and the thing that jumps out of it for me is the tanginess. Not overpowering but rather pleasant. The tanginess is most noticeable at the beginning of the bowl and diminishes as it is smoked. Mid bowl I find a certain richness and "woodsy" taste dominates and this remains consistent to the end.
Overall, very pleasant, good change of pace for me but as another reviewer noted, if one is looking for a more full bodied English blend then this one is probably not for them.

A good all-day smoke, with a slight flavouring that is the Peretti trademark. At sight it's almost completely pale and mid brown, with very few black ribbons. As expected, latakia is in the background, playing a little role. Its characteristic of cool and even burning makes me think this could be a great change of pace for accustomed Burley smokers.

Another great blend from the House of Peretti. This tobacco has a delicious aroma of spicey latakia, turkish and orientals with a helping of lemon Virginia. In the tin it is visually pleasing, the cut and humidification are perfect for packing in any size pipe. Once lit you are off on an exotic journey to wherever your imagination will take you. Highly recommended.

Quality mild-medium English. Did not experience tongue bite whether sipping or drawing harder. Delivered with just about the right moisture content, it burned down to silver ash with few relights needed. Listing says ribbon cut but much rough cut leaf here as well.

This is a delightful mild English. It has a delicious toasty, tangy flavor, with a gentle sweetness.
I am not so sure this has any Burley in it, but I am sure there is a good dose of Turkish. The combination of Turkish with Virginia gives it a delightful lemony freshness. The Latakia provides just a hint of smokey spice.
It deserves a place with other classic mild English mixtures, such as Dunhill's Standard Mixture Mild, Rattray's 7 Reserve, and Professional Mixture, and Wilke's No. 10.
This is an English for all day consumption. It is biteless, refreshing, with a pleasant aftertaste and a mild room note.
If you are in the mood for a full, leathery English, this won't do the trick, but on its own terms, it is exquisite.

This is the lightest and mildest English blend I have smoked to date. It has a subdued sweetness and borders on being an English aromatic. The latakia is there but in very minimal proportion. Its burning qualities are excellent and it has no bite, regardless of the puffing cadence. If your tastes lean to light and mild English blends, D-7485 will be a winner for you and an all-day smoke. If you enjoy English blends with more body and strength, you are advised to look elsewhere.
A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.
I rate this tobacco 9.0 out of 10.

This blend reminds me of another Peretti blend, 9575. Although in this case, the burley is replaced by the inclusion of lemon virginia. A very satisfying smoke in the English tradition. The cut is atypical english, it packs easily and after a tamp and relight, one is off to some quality "downtime."
