HU Tobacco Fayyum Kake
(3.43)
The Fayyum Kake: Following the success of FbM’s Fayyum Blend, HU Tobacco decided to provide this remarkable mixture of dark fired Virginia, Kentucky, black cavendish and its generous measure of latakia in “Kake” form. The tobacco is pressed in cakes for one week and then cut into plugs. This process enhances the already exquisitely balanced choice of leaf for an ethereally smoky, deeply rich and incredibly complex smoking pleasure.
Notes: Contains 65% Cyprian latakia. Syrian was originally used until the stock ran out. (They changed the name of the series from "Foundation by Musicó" to "African Line")

Fayyum Kake promised a lot but did not deliver. In fact it has proven to be even more disappointing than the blend as, to prevent the tobacco from turning into dust, I had to break it into chunks; which made the smoking even more difficult and frustrating. An extremely dark blend, it was fairly dry upon opening due to its tinning technique. The tin aroma was thus rather subdued because of this, revealing a faint latakia and cavendish aroma. I could not make out the Kentucky at all. As for the smoking it has provided me with nothing but sheer frustration. Frustration at trying to light it, frustration at trying to keep it lit, frustration at trying to make out any taste out of this concoction. The result after a half - dozen pipefuls was a memorable episode of tongue bite as with the blend. I even tried to blend it with some golden leaf to help a proper combustion - without negatively impacting on its taste - but the attempt was unsuccessful. I do not lack patience but Fayyum Kake is, just like its sibling and under these conditions, just not worth the purchase. Tobacco should not be this difficult to smoke!

The Krumble Kake is my favorite format. I love what it does for the taste and it is just so easy to prepare. It's in the title! It just so gently crumbles apart. I asked Hans if he produced a Kake as I was new to his shop. He said he made this Fayyum Kake, but it was out of stock and sells out rapidly when he does get it. Apparently Kake requires more work than the rest. I received an email a couple of weeks ago letting me know he was about to have it. Based on the reviews and his thoughts, I happily ordered some. My order arrived today, roughly a week from Germany to Alabama. That's quick. The aroma upon opening the tin... If I owned a smoke shop, I'd want it to smell like this. It comes in a paint can with two "brownies" in a sealed ziplock bag. The texture, moisture content, and cut really is a brownie. I was tempted to take a bite. It's beautiful! I used a razor blade to cut a bit off and crumbled it straight into the bowl. It lights with no effort and required no relights. This is fine tobacco with nothing to get in the way. It's ingredients tell you what you need to know about taste. It's just a beautifully constructed blend. I love Hans' work and fear it might vanish.

I'm a relatively new pipe smoker and have been wanting to get into Latakia forward blends for a while, and had heard good things about HU's lines. I grabbed a tin when I saw it go on sale from an online vendor here (I'm in Germany). Good-golly Batman... this stuff is good.
This stuff tastes like drinking a Guinness, while munching on a German spice cookie at Christmastime. And the smell wafting up from my pipe is kind of incense in the way you'd expect from a holiday market. (I strongly suspect, though, that once it settles in, I'll smell like I smoked a cigar)
This is everything I've wanted from a blend I can puff on for a while while reading or writing this fits the bill well as it smokes easily, cool, long and puts out huge billowy clouds of smoke. Unfortunately, my wife may not let me in the house afterward because I smell a little bit like campfire right now... but hey - it gives me something to look forward when she's out of town for a weekend.

Very dark Kake and a very dry one at that. The leaf being very dark, this one made for an extremely unpleasant experience when I attempted to smoke it. I have never seen such a dry tobacco that was so difficult to be smoked. I dumped the bowlful before reaching the end of the first third. It's a good thing I only bought two tins; because not only would I not buy again but both ended up in the rubbish container.
