Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Sliced Black Rum Twist
(4.00)
Manufactured by spinning dark fired leaves into a rope. Black Bogie rather than Brown Bogie which makes it milder with a smokey aroma, is a true old fashioned stout smoke, perfect, with a good strength more suited for the experienced pipe smoker .

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. - Sliced Black Rum Twist.
A review I first posted years ago but vehemently disagreed with. So, take two:
The twist has been very well sliced, to the point where the contents of the pouch resemble thick, black, ribbons. The nose is mildly aromatic and the moisture's good.
SBRT lights easily, and then the burn's excellent throughout, producing a thick, cool, smoke and finishes with a light grey ash. Because of the smoke's thickness I advise an open window. For the first quarter the rum gives a molasses sweetness, yet very little actual alcohol; unless retro-haled. As the bowl progresses the rum increases in strength. The dark fired Virginia accounts for the leading flavour, but the smoke's given a touch of freshness by a smattering of air cured Virginia. Generically speaking, this is quite a powerful smoke.
Nicotine: strong. Room-note: tolerable to strong.
I couldn't have this as a go-to, but the quality's irrefutable. Four stars:
Highly recommended.

A delicious dark, fire-cured tobacco with a fair hint of rum. I get notes of leather with raisin and more than a hint of rum straight from the tin. It's very moist and I find it benefits from a decent amount of drying time. I rub out about 1/2oz at a time and keep it in an old 1oz tobacco tin when I'm actively smoking it. The rest will, undoubtedly age well (if it gets the chance...).
It has no hint of bite, even if treated harshly, but the flavours come through best if it's carefully packed and smoked very slowly. It needs more than the average number of relights and does leave some moisture in the bowl. For me, this isn't suitable as an all-day smoke, but for times when I want a full-bodied, dark tobacco, this is one I'll go to.
For me, the nicotine levels are above medium and the room note is strong, which might not be to the tastes of non-smoking 'significant others'.

I really enjoy this tobacco. It was the first blend I bought when I took to the pipe around a year ago. It definitely improves over time in a jar(really powerfull booze sour fermented smell) and the fruitiness just keeps on getting stronger. I don't get non of the grassy flavours all I taste is the blackcurrant, and a slight hit of rum. Tbh the rum smell comes through more on the tin note, but its a really nice smoke. Great for the beginner who wants to dive into the darker tobaccos. I've never had tounge bite off this blend but if I go too fast(it can be very moreish) I get a touch of indigestion.
