Peter Stokkebye Toasted Burley (No. 312)

(3.21)
Peter Stokkebye 312 Toasted Burley is a new addition to the lineup. This nutty burley is gently toasted which helps to remove bitterness and adds more depth to the flavor. This is a particularly good tobacco to use when you want to lighten the flavor of a blend.
Notes: Peter Stokkebye's Toasted Burley really showcases the nuttiness of the air-cured leaf through gentle toasting, the process offering a subtly nuanced smoke with a sweeter after note than you'll typically find in other burley blends.

I really enjoy the burley as a broken flake and the toasting has left it with a nice brown and dark brown color. I noticed the topping was the same as PS Luxury Bullseye Flake. That said it is just a very slight sweet topping, not a flavoring. Hard to make this bite. Has a mellow classic burley taste and great natural warm tobacco room note.

As a blending tobacco this really shines as a great base. I have used 3oz of this mixed with 1oz of PS Highland Whiskey. The result is an extremely mild, intriguing, semi-aromatic mixture that I can use all day. Highly Recommended.

I did not like this Burley at all and I am surprised how many reviewers here have. While the toasting of the Burley may have tamed it for those who normally have trouble smoking burleys, to me, it also sucked a lot of life from this leaf, IMO. I actually tried this blend in every type and size of pipe I had before relegating it to a slow death as a blender in my rotation.

The blend itself performs well in every way in terms of how it smokes; it is just boring. Even when using it as a blender, I can't say this improved anything I paired it with. It is between one and two stars for me, so I will give it two in deference to those reviewers who enjoy it.

Baseline tobacco. You think you've had plain burley (P.Albert, Granger, etc.), but you haven't until you've had something like this. Really centers you to where tobacco flavor (burley) begins, and just how "topped" some dumb old OTC's really were (joking about the dumb). This is good to blend with at times as well.

An occasional favorite of mine is about 50% of this Toasted Burley, with 25% Stokkebye's Dark Fired, and 25% Golden Extra. I rub in about a 1/2 oz or so of this ratio into a Ziploc at night, and spritz it lightly with water, zip up tight, airless as possible, and let it rest until morning. A cob of this with strong fresh ground coffee puts me in a wonderful mind. I imagine a smoker of century's past would be enjoying a very similar flavored experience.

Ah . . . this taste. Prince Albert can stay in his can! Tangy and citrusy, nutty and leathery, full-bodied and completely satisfying without beating up your lungs and throat in the process, Stokkebye’s 312 is a clean burning and bite free broken flake that also won’t empty out your wallet. It doesn’t leave a chemically taste in your mouth, either. I could’ve cried when P&C brought this stuff back.

Newminster has a similar offering, but it does not age as well as this one (their Light Burley tends to acquire a stale taste after a few months of aging.) The better aging might be due to the toasting process - 312 also has a deeper, richer flavor profile when it’s fresh. Yeah, this is a one-note blend. Briar Fox has more flavor dimensions. Two-Timer smokes better, but this broken flake smokes longer. Give it a try, your budget won’t notice any difference.
