McClelland Oriental Mixture No. 12

(2.42)
Rich and full of flavor, especially appealing in the evening, still spiced gently enough with Latakia and Turkish leaf to be a superb occasional tobacco for the individual who normally prefers lighter mixtures and Matured Virginias.

This blend is often overlooked in the quest for the more bold statements in tobacco mixtures. This I feel, in part contributed to the happy situation when I was able to secure an aged supply. My first two (2) oz had over six (6) years in the tin and my favorable experience with it has made me grateful that I've got more after this is smoked up. A large part of the complexity is how time has treated the Virginia and Oriental leaf. Smooth and sweet, it is best smoked rather dry as it presents from the tin. I would recommend a slow and deliberate smoke with this one not only to gain maximum flavor but to avoid the tongue bite commonly associated with Virginia leaf. It would be to your advantage to smoke this indoors or much of the subtle ambiance will be lost outdoors. This is sweet recreation for those seeking a subtle diversion from their usual tobac.

I have to say this is one of McClelland's finest offerings. It is a true Scottish mixture. This blend has an all natural taste that leaves you wanting more.THe dominant flavor is Virginia with the orientals as a compliment. It burns very slowly and has a rich natural taste. My only complaint is it seems to leave me with a sore tongue the next day.I don't blame the blend I merely think that McClelland's process does this to me. I really think everyone should give this a try.3 of 4 stars

McClelland?s Oriental Mixture No. 12 is a blend of Turkish leaf with a sweet yet piquant flavor. The smoking characteristics of this mixture do leave something more to be desired though.

The initial tin aroma is very strong in a sharp acidic note. After hours of drying, the true aroma of the blend reveals itself as being slightly smoky with a tart pungency. Oriental Mixture No. 12 is a combination of Virginia flake and Turkish tobaccos with a small amount of Latakia added. The color of this mixture is as follows: 50% black, 40% brown, and 10% pale orange brown.

The cut of Oriental Mixture No. 12 is a crimped ribbon cut of Orientals interspersed with a small amount of dark broken Virginia flake pieces. The initial moisture is slightly above average. This blend needs considerable drying in order to obtain more adequate smoking characteristics.

Oriental Mixture No.12 lights easily but also tends to extinguish easily, especially when the moisture has not been removed yet. Even when this negative moisture is removed, the tobacco simply needs too many relights. The burning of this tobacco tends to concentrate itself in the center of the cake rather than consuming the entire cake itself. When this blend does burn entirely, it leaves the pipe bowl clean. The room note can be considered somewhat weak without any striking characteristics.

The flavor of Oriental Mixture No. 12 is mildly sweet with herbal or spicy nuances. With all things being considered, this blend has a balanced, medium low strength taste. With moisture, the tongue bite of the blend is a bit much though this can be considerably reduced with the almost complete removal of the moisture. The smoke made by this blend is wispy and again, of a non-characteristic nature.

McClelland?s Oriental Mixture No.12?s heavy usage of sun cured Turkish tobaccos makes for a delightful taste and a change of pace from the Latakia ladened English blends. With this being said, far too many relights are needed with this tobacco mixture making for a somewhat unenjoyable smoking experience. Considerable aging (5 years) does not seem to reduce the negative qualities of this blend but does help create a more smooth and complex taste.

Tin Aroma: Pleasantly smoky to my Latakia-jaded nose, but with that sweetness that heavy oriental blends always seem to develop.

Physical Characteristics: a variety of shapes and sizes to the individual pieces in this blend, ranging from larger dark broken flake pieces of matured virginias to smaller ribbon cut orientals, spaning the whole spectrum of tans and light browns.

Notes: I smoked a 100g tin that had aged for three years. Packing and lighting were relatively easy, though I did have to let the can air out a bit before it would light easily. I seem to have this problem with a lot of tinned tobacco, so it is probably me, and not any one manufacturer. The sweetness from the aroma never really showed up in the smoke. Almost all of the flavor I got was an interesting interplay between the Virginias bright notes and the musky Orientals. During the tin I smoked, there were a few uteerly enjoyable bowls when everything went right and a few abmoniable bowls in which I ended up dumping half of the tobacco in disgust. Most every bowl however fell midway between the two extremes; a nice enough smoke, but plagued with relights and a constant threat of tongue bite. I am beginning to think that either my technique is horribly flawed or that stoved Virginias just do not agree with my chemistry.

Verdict: This was a little too straightforward for me, and the 'matured virginias' bit the heck out of me, so I probably won't be revisiting this blend soon.
