McClelland Frog Morton on the Town

(3.32)
A rather mellow smoke, McClelland's Frog Morton on the Town draws deep rich flavor from its base of golden and red Virginias and a pleasant smoky, earthy undertone from the latakia. A subtle flavoring from Basma (a Greek Oriental tobacco) gives the blend a unique, almost vanilla like flavor.
Notes: The name Frog Morton comes to us from the works of JRR Tolkien. Frogmorton: A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the East Road, between the Three-farthing Stone (fourteen miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (twenty-two miles to the east). Immediately to the north of the village, the stream known as the Water broke into two, creating a wide watery region - this feature seems to have given Frog Morton its name, which means "frog marsh".

My favourite of the fm series. It is a mild oriental with floral and smokey-wood notes. Balanced, smooth, very tasty.

A great cross-over between vapor and english.

A smoke I truly enjoy. I just open my first can of this stuff and I will be ordering some more. While I really enjoy the original Frog Morton, I enjoy this one as well because there is a hint of sweetness to the smoke that can be smelled in the air as well as tasted on the draw. No bite detected whether smoking fast or sipping. Another good blend from McClelland.

A definate four star in my book. This has become my "go to tobacco." I prepack my pipes the night before and usually find FMotT to light right up and burn all the way through with no problem. I smoke it in a wide variety of pipes including briars, various cobs, CW's and taverns. I get no tongue bite from this tobacco but I have developed the habit of "sipping it" for it's excellent flavors which develop as I work my way throw the bowl. The sweetness of the Virginia, the complexity of the Latakia and the unusual smoothness of the Basma all combine to make this one delightful smoke. I highly recomend.

This is probably one of the only English blends I can smoke all year long, including the hot, sticky summer months.

I would love to try Basma on its' own, just to see exactly what that lends to this blend. On The Town is a one-of-a-kind blend for sure.

Rich, sweet, salty and tangy all at once. Complex, but not complicated. Refreshing comes to mind. A good morning smoke, or an after dinner smoke following a light meal.

Tin dated 6-11-05. After 6 years of age, I am not sure it helped, but it sure didn't hurt.

This latakia blend is a winner - that simple. Yes, the latakia is bold and dominates, but that's the point I think. There is a spice topping that lasts throughout the bowl. I like it whatever it is, and it keeps the smoke from being dull. As I finished the tin, I liked this blend more and more and will re-order in the future.

I get no burn or bite with this blend which I think is also the point. If you are looking for a strong English, this is not it. This is not comparable to Night Cap or similar blends (nor is it meant to be) and such comparisons miss the point entirely - apples and oranges.

This is a latakia lovers blend with a light spice. Enjoy.

4 stars --- solid!!

Thanks,

Ethan

Maybe for a long-time English smoker this tobacco would be a bit on the mild or even boring side. For someone who enjoys a wide variety of tastes in tobacco, or for a newer smoker, this stuff is the shiznit.

Quite a bit more "English" than Frog Morton - this product has a much more complex flavour profile including some high class orientals.

Sweeter than, say, Presbyterian, and also a little heavier in body, due to the latakia, this is still a very mild tobacco, and easily an all-day smoke for many, I'm sure.

Certainly worth a try, just to prove that not all McClelland's tobaccos smell like ketchup.

The tin I've been babying is from 2017. The smoke is smooth as silk with a deep, natural sweetness. The Virginias stand out, although I mostly get sugary red Virginias on the palate. The Latakia is smoky, the basma is woody. It all comes together in a deep, rich, sweet, smoky mixture with the slightest hint of vanilla, with almost no complexity or evolution. An extraordinary blend. 4 stars.

I found a full jar of this from 2013 that I completely forgot about. Theres an odd flavor for the first third that’s hard to describe. Band-Aids sounds weird, but that’s what it’s kinda like. Its the only blend I’ve had with Basma Orientals in it, so maybe they could be what I’m tasting? What sells this one for me is the retrohale. It’s super smooth, and strangely tastes almost exactly like these crème de minthe cakes my mom makes around the holidays. Wish I stocked up on this when I had the chance.

For me, this is the best of the Frog Morton series. Better than Cellar, by a good margin, due to a greater sense of harmony. This is the FM blend that I'll miss the most. As close to a perfect aromatic without really being an aromatic.

this is a very smooth and tasteful english blend. easy to smoke with a little touch of latakia, you can taste it smell it but it is not overwhelming. i smelled vanilla like smell, but it is definitely not an aromatic.

i highly recommend this blend if you like an easy smoke english blend.
