McClelland Frog Morton on the Town

(3.32)
A rather mellow smoke, McClelland's Frog Morton on the Town draws deep rich flavor from its base of golden and red Virginias and a pleasant smoky, earthy undertone from the latakia. A subtle flavoring from Basma (a Greek Oriental tobacco) gives the blend a unique, almost vanilla like flavor.
Notes: The name Frog Morton comes to us from the works of JRR Tolkien. Frogmorton: A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the East Road, between the Three-farthing Stone (fourteen miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (twenty-two miles to the east). Immediately to the north of the village, the stream known as the Water broke into two, creating a wide watery region - this feature seems to have given Frog Morton its name, which means "frog marsh".

Another Frog and another disappointment for me. This is the fourth of the five that I have reviewed leaving only on the bayou to review. My buddy who hunts with me is a Frog fanatic, so I know I had tried this fresh before and thought it alright. Granted, this would be at deer camp with many beers/whiskeys being consumed. The furthest thing from my mind during these times is contemplating the nuances of a particular blend. And while hunting, I've got my own favorites In the tree with me.

Anyway, fast forward to an estate auction where I ended up winning an opened tin dated 1999 with no clue as to how long it had been opened. Now, some people swear latakia blends get better with age. I have noticed the majority of people making these claims don't smoke a lot of latakia blends. It is my contention that Latakia gets better with age if you really don't like latakia that much.

I am not a huge latakia fan, but do enjoy it from time to time and I definitely prefer it fresh as this can was just lousy. lol The latakia is just flat and very similar to other Lat blends from the 90's that I have tried. There is just this stale taste that really detracts from what is likely a nicely aged Virginia. Also, the oriental varietals intended to star in this blend, are obscured as well.

Ultimately, I really questioned whether I should even review this blend and don't expect it to be much help to anyone, but thought I would put my impressions down as I do have another tin unopened in the cellar of a more recent vintage.

For now I am leaving this at a cautionary two stars and will revisit when I pop that tin.

Update 2/7/2023 I smoked that other tin that had aged about 6 years at the time I opened it. I would still put this at two stars, but might have pushed it to three if it was still available. The problem is that it is just not worth putting a lot of hard-earned money towards a purchase of this. It is just a mediocre latakia blend as far as I am concerned. There are many latakia blends out there and available on the cheap that are as good or better than this.

You must let this blend breath for several days as it is a bit moist. I love Frog Morton but this is Frog Morton super lite! Just not that flavorful for me and that small amount of flavor came and went. Room note was not near as nice as their other brands. Burns cool and very little bite noticed. Frog Morton I give an A on the town I give C-

Everyone always talks about this tobacco. I was at pipe club and a tin was passed round. Packs well. Lights well. Smokes well. Tastes so mild I an not real sure if this is tobacco at all. It is bland with little taste and I feel is made for a new smoker. I will pass on the Frog and jump to something stronger of a blend for me.

One more "English mixture". I do not like nuts aluminium can but that's the way it is. Smokes light and easy. What distinguish it is that strange "Basma" taste. You can like it or not (I'm indifferent). The main problem of this mixture is the total absence of nicotine. I'll add "Ten Russians" to it, maybe this way it will be more satisfying.

Not a bad tobacco base that is partly destroyed due to over- sugaring and adding artificial flavoring.

This is far from an English for me... It's an aromatic tobacco with an English aroma added to it... Makes it feel weak and not very deep.

Sadly I bought into the hype, now that I've tried it for myself I wish I had looked elsewhere!

Somewhat recommended for beginners that would want to knoow what an english tobacco almost tastes like but not quite leave the world of aromatics.

Sits flavorwise somewhere between boswells mild english and northwoods... Northwoods being the mildest "faux-English" I would ever want to try again. Northwoods is A LOT better!

This is the lightest of the Frog blends, it would serve well as an all day or early morning smoke. The Orientals are very subdued and the Latakia is just strong enough to make its earthy presence know. I much prefer the on the Bayou and across the pond, but this does hit the spot every once and a while. I think that I might have liked this one a bit more if I would have smoked it earlier in my English smoking tenure.

Very similar to Frog Morton: visually there are more light-colored bits than in the original blend, but I don't find the taste to be much different. Perhaps it's less sweet and a bit more smoky (more Latakia), but the difference is very subtle. Again, it's a very soft blend. Typically stoved.

I find this blend, by itself, to be too mild, almost insipid. But handy. I like a nic buzz. I smoke Nightcap, Irish Flake, and Jack Knife. I find the nic hit satisfactory, but the experience is way too strong for me. A rough smoke. So FMT to the rescue. Blends beautifully with Nightcap. I can actually taste the tobaccos now, both of them, without a downside, except I want more Vitamin N. I really wish I could find a non-aro that I did not have to mix, but this will do the trick for awhile. I'm sure there are many, but I've only been smoking regularly for a couple of years. So, I recommend it for blending, less so on its own.
