Mac Baren Plumcake

(2.88)
A mixture of fully ripe Virginia tobaccos, sliced, cask mellowed burley tobaccos, dark spicy cavendish and just a touch of latakia. To give Plumcake an elegant aroma, the blend has been flavoured with aged Jamaica rum. NEW TIN DESCRIPTION: Plumcake brings the thoughts back to old times, when the sailors onboard the sailing ships filled their pipe with good, satisfying tobacco and having the scent of tar and saltwater all around them. Bright Virginia tobaccos mixed with burley, a little original Mac Baren cavendish and just a touch of [Cyprian] latakia. On top of this masterly made blend original Jamaica Rum has been added to fulfill the impression. This blend is full bodied and rich, giving you the taste nuances of natural sweetness added with a slight taste of smoke, latakia and the distinctive aroma of sailor rum.
Notes: Introduced in 1957. As of 01/30/2019, according to Per Georg Jensen of Mac Baren it has "Latakia from Cyprus, it is many years since the Latakia from Syria were used.".

This is one of the most apart tobacco's I have ever smoked. It is totally different from all tobacco's I ever smoked, can not compare it with any other. Untill now it does not seems to bite. For me as an English-type smoker, this tobacco is a good one to smoke now en then. It has some smokey undertaste, in the mouth there is some sweetness and I also taste the virginia in it. The last part of the bowl for me is the most delicious part. Then all ingredients come together to get a full after-dinner smoke. I think there is not much nicotine in it, did not notice much of it however. A recommendation when you want to smoke something completly different.

PLUMCAKE 09-02-2005. Plumcake was my main staple tobacco for a very long time. Then about three year's ago it seemed to change. The change I noticed at that time was,it seemed to lose any strength and flavour. About two week's ago I thought I'd give it another go. 'I'm very glad I did' as it's now fully back to that superb beautiful tobacco that I alway's loved. I don't rub this out very much, one to two light's only seem's to be required. Superb flavour's of all the the blend's used, come through at various time's throughout the smoke. Plumcake is very well behaved, all the way to the bottom of the bowl. It leaves a very nice non-goopy,clean,white-grey ash at the end of the bowl. "Very, highly recommended"

Plumcake is a famous blend that I just had to try. I must say, I have no regrets.

The tin aroma when first opened was potent to say the least. Smelled like rotten fruit to me. I let it breathe for a few hours. After that, it smelled like something to be enjoyed with a fork as opposed to a pipe. It has a fruity aroma that I can enjoy without even having to light up.

The label says there is some Latakia in there as well, but I don't smell it, nor do I taste it. Latakia is referred to as a 'condiment' tobacco, and I believe that is how it is used here. It enhances without overpowering.

I also don't really detect the rum, per se. What I do smell and taste is a sweet fruity light tobacco that others in the room seem to be able to appreciate right along with me. Many aromatics are more for the other people in the room - not Plumcake. It takes the smoker into account too!

I have smoked Plumcake in different sized pipes, and I have found that a deeper narrow bowl helps keep the flavors from running over one another.

When this tin is gone, I will replace it. I think Plumcake will be in my rotation for a good while to come.

I like this more than medium smoke. the Virginia and flue cured weed is tasteful and mellow. I would not recommend this for a novice but after you get your sea legs this is one for you to try

I'm a sucker for Danish style Aromatics, and always keep a tin of this open. I find that it gets much better after the tin has been opened for awhile (even a year) and some of the topping wears down. It never disappears altogether, but it does become more of a "natural" smoke than an aromatic. Typical of all MB blends, it has the perfect cut that fills a large bowl with no problem and a smaller bowl with some slight rubbing. It burns slow and sweet and can bite with aggresive puffing. The room aroma is not overpowering and it has enough strength for me to realize I just finished a bowl. It's not my favorite in the MB line (Virginia #1) but I do reach for it quite a bit. One thing I never did understand is why this blend is always more money than the other MB blends...oh well. Recommended.

Another duty free pick up as I am a big MB fan in recent years. A great mixture I love and is a solid go to. This is not a typical danish aromatic as one would expect but goes more the direction of a medium English mixture. It's a loose ribbon cut, not wet and YES, this will burn hot like a hay fire. As a flake smother I am taking this very slow, as slow as possible and it is magnificent. Just a little bit of flavor but not enough topping to really make it out, definitely not a chemical or fake topping of many of the 'aromatics' you smell nowadays. The flavors kind of blends the different tobaccos together. Could get a little harsh to the bottom of the bowl but the pipe stays nice and dry. If you are an English smoker, you may find this one fun, if you like to ween off aromatics and 'graduate' this is good gateway too.

It has a nice flavor and a nice amount of latakia added to it. It is not boring at all and gives me a good feeling. It burns very well and evenly and does not sting.
