Mac Baren Plumcake
(2.88)
A mixture of fully ripe Virginia tobaccos, sliced, cask mellowed burley tobaccos, dark spicy cavendish and just a touch of latakia. To give Plumcake an elegant aroma, the blend has been flavoured with aged Jamaica rum.
NEW TIN DESCRIPTION: Plumcake brings the thoughts back to old times, when the sailors onboard the sailing ships filled their pipe with good, satisfying tobacco and having the scent of tar and saltwater all around them. Bright Virginia tobaccos mixed with burley, a little original Mac Baren cavendish and just a touch of [Cyprian] latakia. On top of this masterly made blend original Jamaica Rum has been added to fulfill the impression. This blend is full bodied and rich, giving you the taste nuances of natural sweetness added with a slight taste of smoke, latakia and the distinctive aroma of sailor rum.
Notes: Introduced in 1957.
As of 01/30/2019, according to Per Georg Jensen of Mac Baren it has "Latakia from Cyprus, it is many years since the Latakia from Syria were used.".

This mixture I found to be very sweet and aromatic. It smelled so good in the tin that I was almost tempted to chew it. This is a mild to mediun smoke with a wonderful room note but smokers beware , If you puff this one to hard or to often those Virgianaians in the blend will cut lose on your tounge like a platoon of grunts armed with flame throwers. I personaly recomend smoking this blend in a very large chubby billiard with thick chamber walls and taking short puffs. As for me Lustra and I hold the same opinion , the taste is not worth the tounge blisters.

I use to smoke this alot once, but now it seem's alot milder to me than year's ago.The last few time's I smoked it,I found myself seeking something stronger.Though the taste is still pleasant enough & it didn't bite my tongue. For fairly new comer's to pipe smoking I'm sure it would be good to start with.It light's easy & is very easy to manage.Leave's the pipe with a clean looking ash at the bottom of the bowl & no goop! In it's class-I'll give it 2 & half star's out of 4.

I tried this blend as an attempt to put a quality aromatic in my rotation.
The color of the tobacco is mostly golden and brown virgnias with some dark cavendish. The moisture level was a tad on the high side. The tin aroma was devine.
This tobacco requires all of a piper's attention. Overpuff just a little and the virginias cut loose with the tongue flamethrower. My poor tongue suffered through this 100 gram tin due in part to my inattentiveness. This does not mean this is a bad tobacco, its just that I'm used to being able to enjoy my pipes (and tobacco) without the necessity of paying strict attention to my smoking technique. The tobbaco taste was actually pretty good when I wasn't extinguishing my flaming tongue with water.
The room aroma is a definite crowd pleaser. Even my ultra-health conscious, anti-smoking sisters loved the smell. Nevertheless, I cannot recommend this tobacco. Of course if you can pay your undivided attention to how you smoke your tobacco and use proper, regulated smoking technique, then give this a try.

I find this blend to be ok just not great. It packs, lights and burns ok but the flavor to me is not worth the effort. This tobacco also seems to be artificially sweetened and in turn does not age well.I know there are other blends out there that will better reward your efforts. All in all a quality tobacco but the portions seem to be to muddy no real character at least for me anyways.

July 2002: ....
I have been trying for two weeks to get accustomed to the sudden blast of plum when first lighting up. After the top 3rd, the blast ceased but I could still taste the "blues" in the background.
In defense of the tobacco; it is top grade and I love several of Mac Baren's other blends. At times (after the initial blast), I can smoke several bowls back to back. At other times, I have to force myself to finish one.
If your stepping up into the VAs; this is a good one. Plum, Blueberry and Raspberry lovers will crave this blend. The "blues" turned me off.
October 2002: .... Visited Plumcake again. Three month old tin. The Plum is still there but not as domineering as it once was. I'll finish this tin eventually.

The plum in the title gives some warning at least that plums are on the agenda with this one, a mellow mixture, a must for plum lovers everywhere, but pipe lovers my find a rather limited appeal .A novelty you my find hard to lose once it gets a hold of your pipe. Devotees will find every new mixture retains the plum magic.

This is a nice tasty tobacco that burns like a house on fire. The taste has never been worth the tongue-blisters for me. Ouch!
