Rattray Wallace Flake

(3.00)
We would describe 'Wallace Flake' as the Holy Grail among the flakes. Try these extraordinary creation, and you will know why we stick out our neck that far. Virginia tobaccos, whose color ranges from golden to chocolate brown, were combined with sun-dried India and finally refined with a very fine plum aroma.
Notes: After K&K lost the Peterson range to Mac Baren, they did not want to waste their recipes. They tweaked them a little and simply renamed the old Peterson line to be re-released under the Rattray's label: Malcolm Flake being Erinmore Flake; Sterling Flake being Irish Flake; and Wallace Flake being University Flake.

Tight strips of dark pressed flakes (like SG FVF). It offers a great tin aroma with that plum essence topping coming thru; more prevalent than in the actual smoking experience.

The tobacco comes from the tin a little moist, but just right after rubbing out and then standing for 10 minutes or so. I'm OK with that.

I like Wallace Flake for the combined character of a quality pressed Virginia and a subtle plum casing. Not sugary or syrupy like some low end flavored Cavendish offerings; it's very subtle.

It smokes slow and cool, with no bite, and lasts a good while. The aroma when smoked is like Escudo's tin aroma; I like that. I've have often wished the Escudo olfactory impression when smoked more closely resembled its tin aroma.

Give this one a try. Not super complex; just a nice straightforward Virginia with some added interest with the light essence of plum.

Asked my local specialist provider for a full bodied tobacco before my next trip over the borders, and was recommended this among others. I decided to give it a shot due to the pleasant tin aroma - dark fruity, and prevalent with the plum.

The taste, however, is almost non existent, and did not grant the full bodied smoke I desired. The aftertaste is pleasant, but again with plum. Granted it is an aromatic with plum added, but this slightly reminds me of Solani Blue Label: the same letdown, and I’m not quite sure which one I’d rather prefer.

Now I’ll have to finish this tin, while I eagerly await my next boarding.

This blend grew on me quite a bit from smoking it fresh out of the tin till now, about 3 months later. It loves some air and it gets more tamed and pleasant ad the top fruit/ plum note fades a lot to almost non existent which I like. The nicotine content is high, the strength is strong and it’s robust and satisfying. This one delivers nicotine quick and I’m used to heavy N blends and cigs. I have come to love this blend. I remember getting slight tongue bite at first with the fresh tin, but it’s dried perfect and now it smokes cooler with no bite. Really good stuff for a blend like this . If robust, flavorful and nicotine kick are things that perk your ears give this a try.

Rattrays Wallace Flake- Very similar to UF . Tangy dark fruit with a little spice . Some grass and toasty bread . A little nutty and floral . The plum topping is obvious through the bowl but pleasant and lightly applied . Pairs nice with hot tea . Good morning spring smoke . Needs quite a bit of dry time . Mild- medium nicotine. I like it a little more than UF . - 3

University Flake is a copy of the original University Flake.

Wallace Flake is a copy of University Flake.

So it's a copy of a copy. And Wallace was a Scotsman.

You make up your own mind.

Rattray's Wallace Flake has a tin note that is very sweet, the plum carries the aroma but I also get some citrus, darker fruits, and some earthiness too. As for the smoke, the VA's are a little more forward than the burley. They are citrusy, with a grassiness to them with a little dark fruit note to them, and there is a little mild floralness and bready note with the barest hint of spice. The burley is very earthy, nutty, and a little woody and also has a slight note of molasses. The plum topping sings a little above all of this and is quite sweet but not cloyingly so. The aftertaste lingers for a while and is quite pleasant too. The room note was very nice for me when coming back into the room but unnoticeable otherwise, and was not commented on by the wife, so that is a win in my book. The overall strength is solidly in the range of mild to medium the nic hit is at the bottom of that range for me. A very good blend that is easy to recommend. A solid 3 stars.

This is a very congenial tobacco. Nice tasty, bready, fruity flakes. I enjoyed it best rubbed out to a ribbon. Lit easy enough, has a nice very balanced flavour with a nice aftertaste. The roomnote is quite pleasant too. I couldn't detect any topping, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing as it serves to give the smoke a very friendly feel. No tongue bite if sipped slowly and a great pipe for contemplation. Very nice.
