I assumed this would be a cherry-flavor, which it is supposed to be, but I certainly can't taste it. It almost gives a taste of Dr. Pepper or cola, which isn't bad. I had to pick this up because I was looking for a value blend for an everyday smoke and this pouch was packed near to bursting, for only $4.75. I was a fan of the CB White and this one is surely second to it, maybe tied with the Gold for second place. Nice and cool, very typical, sugary CB room note. Not complaining.

For a cherry blend with a bit of a kick this is it. Good for the aromatic smoker switching over to stronger blends. Not bad stuff. Not to wet in the pouch room note is more smokey then cherry but on the whole decent.

This particular type of tobacco needs its own pipe. Over the days it will continue to get even better in the pipe and as the tobacco matures i noticed the flavoring is richer. Just be patient with it and don?t judge it upon first trial. Smoke it in its own pipe for sometime and after the cake forms it will be a very pleasant smoke.

As the alias implies, I am still a gumshoe when it comes to pipe smoking. I have something of an affinity for Cavendish, especially black Cavendish. Here goes:
This blend seemed to have the cherry infused with the tobacco, unlike a lot of other cherry blends I've smoked, which seem like the blender just threw the casing on as a last thought. Smelled very nice in the pouch, with just the right amount of moisture.. Packed well and lit well, charring light too. I only had to relight once. It might be the way I smoke, but this blend was a little harsh on my throat, although I received no tongue bite throughout the ENTIRE smoke. An all around good everyday thinking smoke. Go sailing with the Captain; you'll enjoy his company.

Like the above reviewer, I saw this in an older issue of P&T magazine, and the urge hit me to try a pouch. I've never liked any of the Captain Black blends, even as a new smoker, so actually went into this blend with a bad state of mind. The pouch aroma is very very cherry and you could smell it through the vacuum sealed baggie it comes in. The cut is fairly long and odd, and was harder to pack than most blends I smoke. It's a mix of bright orange and some black, with a lot of stems and what seemed to be low-grade tobacco. Needless to say, I was not impressed but the pouch aroma was nice, so I went on. The blend took a few lights to get it going right and burned fairly well all the way down. I actually came to like the smoke because it had more complexity than the other CB blends. It started off nice and mild, sweet, with the cherry flavoring coming out more so in the aroma than in the taste. It actually tasted a lot like a Danish Style aromatic moreso than a drugstore tobacco. During the bowl, the flavor picked up and turned a bit stronger and the vanilla hints came through strong at the bottom of the bowl. There was no bite and it took 4 swipes of a pipe cleaner during the smoke. Amazingly, I smoked this down to barely any dottle and it actually left the bowl walls dry except in the heel. I'll certainly finish this pouch off (in the same pipe- it sticks like Erinmore) and will try it in a cob next. Overall, I liked it quite a bit which really surprised me.

Ok, let me start with a disclaimer -- I am a new pipe smoker. I don't have all the nuances of tobacco down yet. I'm reviewing because as a new pipe smoker, I never found any reviews written to my level for the novice. Here goes. I like Capt Black Cherry. I tried it because of the review written in Pipe & Tobacco magazine in issue 3 of 2002. It was described as more CHERRY than other cherry tobaccos. They are right. I've tried Middleton's Cherry and couldn't taste any cherry. Capt Black Cherry IS cherry. It lights easily, packed well in my pipe, and after the charring light, I had no problem keeping it lit. I smoke on the faster side, which means that I have to watch out for tobacco bite. This one can bite just a bit if smoked fast, but was not bad enough to stop. Smoke is nice and thick, and the ash was white and grayish. I could actually smell the smoke AS I was smoking, which is a big bonus in my newbie opinion. It does have a vanilla tint to it, but there is definitely more cherry in this blend than other cherry tobaccos. The room aroma is nice, but doesn't linger long or leave the room full of cherry. This is THE cherry tobacco for anyone who likes cherry.
