I stayed away from Burleys for a long time on the suggestion of my tobacconist, but one day I found this labelled as "Papa's Pouch" at a small cigar shop, and out of the few choices they had, this smelled the best in the jar. So, I tried it.

It is a Burley blend, mild, slightly nutty/earthy naturally. But, the casing I believe is coconut. I don't remember where I heard/read this but it makes sense. At first I thought it was vanilla, or some kind of vanilla/almond/who-knows-what casing concoction, but indeed coconut makes the most sense when I think of it as I'm smoking it.

I really like this, it's simple, hard to not enjoy, but I must be in the mood for a no-fuss, and, for me a very mild smoke. Slightly sweet, at least on my palette because of the casing. This isn't the best Burley out there by any means but it's a good place to start if you're like me and want to transition away from the heavily cased aromatics to something a bit more natural. Now this blend is one of only two semi-aromatic blends I keep in my rotation. And, as other reviewers have mentioned it will ghost a briar, so beware. I tend to smoke this in the same pipe as my MacBaren Navy Flake, which is the only other cased tobacco I smoke. For me they don't clash if the bowl is ghosted by either.

I will warn you, it may claim to be Without Bite, but it will bite you if you puff away looking for more of that delicious flavor. It's bitten me more than once, I put it on par with the infamous MacBaren bite. So, puff slowly, and don't go trying to coax anymore out of it than it gives. I've made that mistake hoping for a more robust, fuller smoke out of this. It is what it is, mild, smooth, with a room note reminiscent of your grandpa's workshop.

I would give this three stars in the American Aromatics group. It did not seem overly goopy and was well behaved overall. Would make a good starter smoke for newbies. Pretty much bite free and does burn rather quickly. Not unusual in this category.

Still can bite. Best out of cob. No nonsece all day smoke. In cob you can smoke all way down to a bottom. Flavouring presents only in last third of a bowl.

Smoking again 7-2-23

Bought in bulk from local cigar shop. Subtle sweet vanilla, nutty burley smell, maybe some licorice, sometimes reminds me of coconut. Very much an ode to codger OTC Burley blends. Lights easy and stays lit well. Moist but not sticky. Smoke is creamy, produces a decent amount of it.

The taste is a sweet, mild burley. More sweet than CH, SWR, or Granger. This is very much a burley blend with aromatic qualities to it. Nutty, woody, burley. A little vanilla and coconut note to sweeten it up. Burley can bite me but this is mild so it does not. Low nic levels. Nice with coffee in the morning. It’s a sweet, mild, nutty, aromatic codger blend. It’ll do. If you like sweet burley blends you’ll like this.

The more of these codger blends I smoke the more I appreciate them. Gave this 2 stars 3 years ago but today I’ll give it 3 stars for what it is.

Arrives moist, needs some dry time. Mixed cut, some springy ribbons and some larger chunks. Packs well once dried and needs a bit more than average number of relights. Bag notes of sweet nutty burley, dark fruits, cocoa and molasses. First flavours are the nutty sweet burley followed by the dark fruits. The cocoa is subtle but stays relevant if puffed slowly. I find this to be a great mixer with the edgeworth ready rubbed match from Lane. On its own, it is a reliable smoke that behaves well and should satisfy more times than not. 3 stars as a mixer, 2 stars as a stand-alone. I’ll give it a 3 overall.

These notes are my first impressions of BLWB. I’ve only had a few bowls of this, so far. I’m using it to break in my brand new Gardesana Bianca Lovat pipe. I’ve also had a large bowl in a meershaum. I suspect I’ll get to like it more over time. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is nothing to get too excited about with this blend. But I like it. I find it to be very similar to Carter Hall, Prince Albert, Granger and the like, and I suppose that is Lane’s intention. Seems they succeeded very well. There is plenty of nuttiness here, it smokes smoothly, cooly and really doesn’t bite. The topping isn’t chocolatey. Just a gentle sweetness that is very pleasant. This blend packs easily, burns well and leaves no gunk and little moisture. Minimum re-lights. There may be some humectant applied, but if so, it seems minimal to me. BLWB does what it is supposed to do, and it does it very well. It is mild and unobtrusive, but still tasty. If you like mild, OTC, “old codger” burley blends, you can’t go wrong with BLWB. The price point is pretty good, too. Frankly, I don’t understand why this blend doesn’t get better ratings here. It is really very decent. Cheers!

Jar note of coconut, vanilla, and earth. The brown Ready Rubbed tobacco is moist and may need a little drying. Burns moderately with few relights. The strength is mild and nic is mild. Flavoring is mild, with notes of vanilla, no idea where the coconut went. Taste is mild and consistent, with notes of very woody, molasses, bitter nuts, dry earth, toasted marshmallows, a mildly sweet toasted brown sugar background note, and a smooth retro. Burley is leading and the flavoring is half supporting. Room note is very pleasant, and aftertaste is great.

From my sample, the ribbon cut blend comes in the moist side but does not need any drying time. The aroma is rich Burley and Vanilla/Honey. It’s nutty, Sweet, and sports some molasses as well.

The blend tastes very similar to the aroma. The Burleys are Mahogany, similar to what is found in Prince Albert and many other classic OTC blends. They are rich, toasty, nutty, sweet, and warm in flavor with a natural molasses note. The vanilla topping is different then the vanilla found in many other blends. I find it more like a vanilla extract used for baking. I find notes of honey mixed in as well, and occasionally even a fruity note. The topping is more heavily applied then in other similar blends in this genre. It is always present and doesn’t die down as you smoke through the bowl. It is nearly tied with he Burleys. Over all the flavor is simple, consistent, and just a touch one dimensional. I’m on the fence as to call this an aromatic or not. The topping is heavily applied but the Burleys shine through enough that I would go with heavily topped Burley crossover.

BL/WB smoked just as it’s name suggested, without any bite. It stayed cool and never sported any harsh spots. It behaved well and required little to no relights, however does leave some moisture in the bowl. The Nicotine is hardly noticeable and combined with its easy going flavor make this a great contender for an all day smoke. 3.25 out of 4 stars.

Here is a blend which lives up to its namesake. It is light in color, light in weight, light in nicotine, and light in flavor. While this may sound completely uninviting, if I am in the mood for an uncomplicated and easy to tend smoke with a wonderful aroma, this is what I reach for. As the name states, this blend contains only burley. It is tastefully sweetened with a light coconut essence. It is a very dry and light weight ribbon cut which burns like wildfire if not packed very tightly. Even when packed tightly, a bowl of this lasts about one-third the time of any other blend I have tried. If you are a light puffer like myself, the easy burn is an advantage as little relighting is needed. For this reason it is a favorite smoke of mine when I want to smoke but do not want to be distracted by tending my pipe. The flavor is a straightforward yet understated one of burley and the coconut essence. It tastes like this throughout the entire bowl and never becomes bitter or bland towards the bottom like burley and aromatic blends often do. It burns completely dry and leaves a wonderful aroma in the room of tobacco and the coconut essence. This would be a great blend for new pipe smokers due to its easy packing and light yet natural flavor. Available from Tinder Box, San Francisco, CA.

3/14/2006 -- Still recommended but really too mild tasting to be more than an occasional smoke for me.
