I tried all the three star blends about 35 years ago when I was eager to try every blend available in search of the perfect 'baccy. All of the 3 star blends tasted like mixture #79 in varying degrees. They smelled like licorice in the pouch and left a soapy taste on the palate after smoking. Not recommended unless you would like to regress to being a 4 year old with a bubble pipe. (Remember the toy bubble pipe of the late 1950's? YOu would fill them with liquid soap and blow bubbles with them but you would forget to keep the pipe tilted down and some of the soap would run into your mouth. Yeeeetch!)

I've been told this blend was primarily Burleys with a slight topping. That it probably is (mixed with some Virginias and whatever else) but it also bites up a storm. Like pipestud, I prefer this to Blue (due to biting LESS than Blue which blew my mind that something could actually bite more than this stuff) but I really didn't like a whole lot about it either. I know a bunch of people who smoke up these old Iwan Ries blends all day long but they don't do much for me. I think 3 star Red was my favorite of the bunch.
