Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Escudo Navy De Luxe

(3.48)
A combination of full bodied Virginia from North Carolina and Virginia blended with Perique from Louisiana are the cornerstones in Escudo. The blend is pressed and matured before it is spun and cut into coins. This process ensures the unique character of Escudo.
Notes: Produced by the Cope brothers from 1912 to 1952, at which point they were bought by Gallaher, which produced Escudo until discontinuing it in 1994. A&C Petersen began production in 1997, with the original recipe and presses. Escudo was pulled from US market in 2000 but sold elsewhere. In 2004, production was moved to Orlik/STG and Escudo was reintroduced to the US in 2006.

Update 4/5/06: The more of this that I smoke, the less I like it. It seems to either smoke like steamy air, or like a lump of charcoal dipped in road tar. Downgraded to 2 stars (it only gets 2 because the tin aroma is so good).

Very nice tin appearance. Half dollar sized coins of a nice gold and brown color.

Rubbed one out and loosely trickled it into a CAO full bent. Then I rubbed out another and packed it on top.

Lit easily, and burned fairly well.

Had a nice sweetness from the Virginias, and the perique added a nice peppery note to counteract the sweetness.

I have only tried a few Va/Perique combos, and so far this is the second best one, right behind Kingfisher.

It seems like a month ago this blend had achieved "holy grail" status. Now I see that the 4 star rating as faltered a bit and rightfully so. It just goes to show you that.. the proof of the pudding is in the flavor of the smoke. I absolutely give this blend 2 enthusiastic thumbs up on being an excellent flavored straight tobacco blend. That is it however. If not smoked with deliberate care it burns quite hot and can be down right harsh. Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, it does have a good ole fashioned nic kick. Having said that, I will conclude by saying 3Nuns probably isn't as good as I remember it either!

Great tin aroma, beautiful flakes, easy to rub. Smokes to a fine ash, a little on the hot side. Good, straightforward virginia flavor, perique spice is there but not as heavy as Haddo's which stays on your tongue for days. Not a weed that knocks your hair back, but totally servicable and well-made. Despite its huge reputation and loyal following, this won't be accompanying me to the desert isle. I much prefer Elizabethan Mixture for a tobacco in this vein, so that's what I'll be smoking next!

Perspective of a perique-weenie: This is just too strong for me, perique-wise. I have to be extremely, extreeeeemely careful and attentive when I smoke this or the pepper completely overwhelms the nice VAs and everything else. It just becomes too much work to get the most from it. The VAs could also be a bit sweeter for me.

It does smell quite nice though, in the can and while smoking.

Given Escudo's reputation as one of THE great tobaccos I want to like these gorgeous looking discs, I really do, but...I'm missing something. I've heard it described by others as 'sweet', 'spice and dried fruit', 'smooth', 'velvety', even 'creamy' but all I taste is too much pepper. I've tried it in various different pipes and at different times of the day. I've smoked it gently and tried to be attentive, I've smoked it rubbed it out and I've smoked it folded. Perhaps Perique isn't for me. Then again, I do like Just For Him-Golden Cashmere and J. F. Germain's Royal Jersey Perique from time to time, so what am I missing?

Too strong for my tastes. The Perique adds a very piquant black pepper taste to this tobacco. The Virginias aren't very sweet at all.

If you love strong tobacco and Perique flavour, well, here you go. I much prefer McConnell's Scottish Cake.

Ok, so I am a fan of VA's and this is my first experience with Perique. I would like to first note that this review at this point is based on one bowl of this, as I am sampling some from a tin my tobacco guy has. I have permission to sample more, but I didnt want to be greedy off the bat.

Pipe: Medium straight apple

Tobacco: Older tin which definetly shows age. Tobacco is good though, no sign of mold, but quite moist. Love the ease of breaking up the coins.

Light/Burn: Challenging at best. Took 3 good lights to get her going, but once lit, burn suprisingly cool for the moisture content.

Smoking: First 1/3 of the bowl was torture. The time required to light set my mouth aflame. Was not enjoyable in the begining at all. After a touch of cool off on the palate, could taste the VA's peek, and I stress PEEK through... the perique, or what I am guessing is the perique (spicey and bitey but not in a bad way) comes through. But my opinion, overpowering, big time. Did not make it past the first 1/3.

Overall: Not enjoyable. If I could get past the wildfire of the first part of this smoke, might enjoy it. Is Aloe Vera edible? From what I have learned of Perique, I want it as a compliment, not a dominant, and in this blend, it dominates.

Will try again with a bit of drying time. Otherwise... not a good first date with Perique, but I am used to hard to get, so I will keep searching.

4 out of 10... and 2 stars on this one.

**UPDATE** Aloe Vera is edible... well not really. Hate to do a cheap plug here, but anyone who has ever had tounge bite from sampling... try Biotene Mouth Wash... all natural, no alcohol... very soothing for those bad experiences.
