Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) Escudo Navy De Luxe

(3.48)
A combination of full bodied Virginia from North Carolina and Virginia blended with Perique from Louisiana are the cornerstones in Escudo. The blend is pressed and matured before it is spun and cut into coins. This process ensures the unique character of Escudo.
Notes: Produced by the Cope brothers from 1912 to 1952, at which point they were bought by Gallaher, which produced Escudo until discontinuing it in 1994. A&C Petersen began production in 1997, with the original recipe and presses. Escudo was pulled from US market in 2000 but sold elsewhere. In 2004, production was moved to Orlik/STG and Escudo was reintroduced to the US in 2006.

2/3/2009 Cumberland #1 Escudo #2 for me. Tobacco just doesn't get any better. Thank god I don't have to make a choice between the two, but these are my two favorites tobaccos period. I say this knowing that I can smoke a bowl of aged Caravan whever I like...along with a number of my other favorite tobacco's. But if I had to choose just 2, Escudo would be my second choice.

Escudo, what can I add? One of my absolute favorite tobaccos. I have never smoked the old Escudo, and could not even imagine it better than it already is. Sweet, spice and dried fruits....what a combo. 96+/100. My cellar is full of Escudo tins, but feel the need to add more. The only complaint I could think of would be the scarce amount of tobacco in each tin, but with disks of this quality they can get away with it I guess. As much as I enjoy other vapers, none would takes its place. I prefer it slightly dried out, about 1 1/2 disks at a time in smaller bowls. I guess Filmore, LGF, Embarcadero, Haddos and Cumberland would help ease the pain, but not completely fill the void if this was not around anymore.

I would like to expand on the amount of tobacco in each tin for a moment. I tin of Escudo costs around $8.00 which is enough for multiple 30-45 minute bowls of pure bliss, compare that to one decent cigar for $8.00 and it is the best value money can buy! I did not get into the pipe because of the price/enjoyment value, that is just a bonus!, but I would argue that there is no better value than pipe tobacco today! Better value than food, scotch, cigars. Whatever blend you enjoy, think about that every once in a while....how lucky we are to have found the pipe and that there are multiple blends out there that are truly sublime for every palet! I just hope I live long enough to keep enjoying this wonderful hobby. Sorry to ramble on but if you are reading this then you are probably well aware how lucky we all are to experience the love of briar and all the wonderful blends!

Checking out the massive number of brands and blends here, it hits me that every once in a while, there's a blend that's just SO much better than the rest, so superlative, that I wonder why one got everything so right, and the others are just back there somewhere.

So it is with Escudo. Many VaPer blends are fine, some are very good. Escudo is in a class of one. Rich, fruity, complex. It has a nice kick to it, but remains smooth until it's gray ash. Whatever these blenders have done, they got it 100% right. The VA's are matured to perfection, slightly sweet. The Perique has to be of top quality, and while recognizable, it acts exactly as it should - as a condiment, and a grand compliment to the VA's.

Now, I need to say this: Many here seem to like the little wafers of Escudo. They are unique, yes, and intriguing. If you like them, go for it. I just don't like flakes, or wafers, or the like. I don't like folding, stuffing, air pockets, etc. So, I get a pint sized Mason jar, and once my tins of Escudo have 1-2 years of age on them, I put the wafers in a small food processor and grind them up. Sorry if you find this nearly-sacrilegious! It comes out like a short ribbon cut, packs like a dream, and even seems to improve all that I love about this blend. It takes three cans of Escudo to fill my jar, and once the lid is on, I'm ready for months of occasional delight. This is remarkable PT.

To me, a self titled "Va/Per ho", this is my holy grail, my deserted island smoke.

The coins can be loaded in a number of ways, which I prefer to fold in half then rub out. They pack easily, and burn perfectly as well.

Flavor can range per bowl from Sweet VAs with hints of Perique, to the opposite, but never are either overwhelming the other.

Update: This has entered my Hall of Fame such that, there is not a blend that surpasses Escudo in my pantheon. Even with little age, I adore it (strictly in the sense of "hypo-dulia" [sic] for those concerned).

July 2007: The high marks on TR for Escudo prompted me to buy a new tin after my initial debacle. Something was rotten in Denmark in my first tin. Its contents were uniformly dark, stiff, and nearly odorless, if not a bit fetid. All I received for my efforts was a bowl full of water tasting of pure black pepper. Flash forward to new tin.

What a difference! Variegated striations from tan to dark brown comprise the beautiful rolls, along with a lovely aroma of ripe and matured Virginias, with a tinge of pleasant, non-descript casing (without flavoring) in the Danish tradition.

This is marvelous, rich, somewhat sweet, heady and strong. Rolling two flakes inside a favorite VAPER's pipe made for a long, delicious smoke with subtle variations of flavor down the bowl.

My previous blasts against Escudo are from my first tin that was obviously subjected to spoilage even prior to my purchase. Very glad I gave this another shot. It will join other favorite VAPER flakes such as Fillmore, 633, LGF, Three Nuns and St. James Woods.

Good stuff. Glad I finally tried it. Hay, red wine, figs and peppery smoke. Burns great - rich and solid. I never had even a hint of bite from this user friendly blend. The virginia and perique seem evenly matched, as neither really dominate and every bowl was consistent. If sweet and pleasant aroma and room notes are a priority, then you might want to avoid this one along with bullseye.

*Update: I'm almost finished with my second tin and have a third ready. I have changed the recommendation from 3 to 4 stars. Escudo has become one of my favorites.

I rubbed out this attractive coin flake and dried it about 30min. Packed fair, lit well, and burned clean with only two relights, which is rare for me. A consistent flavor throughout the bowl. The only thing i didn't like about it was that it ended. I will stock up on this one so i never run out.

This stuff is great. Sweet like a mild figgy fruit cake with the spice kick from the perique. A fair nicotine kick that satisfies. If you haven't tried this one, treat yourself.

IMO this has to rank among the best of the VaPers. END has a good nicotine hit with a rich tobacco taste. I detect a very slight flavoring which seems to increase smoothness. The excellent mature Virginias (and maybe the topping) bring a slight sweetness to the blend, and the amount of Perique is perfect for me. This is my first experience with coins and I find them very interesting. END is a joy to smoke. I cut the coins in half and crumble loosely in the bowl. (I haven?t figured out the folding deal yet). After trying it in several pipes, it seems to work best in a large pot. The crumbled tobacco packs easily and stays lit, smoking beautifully to the bottom of the bowl. There maybe something to criticize in the classic blend, but I haven?t found it! Highly recommended!

I bought a variety of tobaccos from my favorite mail order company and this is one of the ones I recieved and I'm glad I selected it. This is a very pleasant smoke. I love the smell of it and it burns cool and slow. It has a great flavor from start to finish and goes great with a glass of bourbon. I'll be sure to order some more tins of this to stash away.
