I am thoroughly impressed with the Boswells - their customer service is superb (very rare these days) and their aromatic blends are quite well done. I'm not an avid aromatic smoker, but their blends tend to be light enough in casing that the tobacco flavors show through. Their choice of foundation tobaccos seem to be of high quality - a true testimony to the integrity of their house. Having said all of that, "Cupcake" is essentially just as described - very, very "cupcakey". The person who won the 'Name that Blend' contest for this one hit it right on the nose. To the blenders credit, there is no dishonesty in the name. The blend smells and tastes exactly like a child's buttercream topped cupcake. It reminded me of those sweet pink, green, yellow and blue frosting covered cupcakes I used to help my children make for bake sale day in elementary school. While those are fond memories, they aren't so cherished that I want to smoke them. Cupcake is simply too sweet and heavily flavored for me. It's a little sticky and gummy in hand, and without any real robust tobacco base at all, at least for my taste. Make no mistake, I am still an ardent fan of Boswell's tobacco blends and pipes. This particular blend is just not for me. I recommend it for those who have a serious 'sweet tooth' when it comes to their tobacco.

A year ago I ran into someone with Boswell's Pipers Pleasure, it was pleasant, so I become curious about their other concoctions, especially one as delicious as a cupcake! I ordered 5 of their Aromatics and a few days later a box came in the mail with a nasty toner ink smell (possibly from the bag labels), but still they had an overpowering stench.

Inside was a syrupy Cavendish, topped beyond recognition (in fact all of their other pouches had the same treatment). It was certainly cased with vanilla, likely caramel, possibly maple syrup, or any sugar product really. Imagine walking into a Gloria Jeans (or some heavy syrup using coffee shop), where the air hangs of artificial sweeteners. You know your teeth are about to ache.

Packing was a bit sticky, but the match loved the contents. The smoke tasted much as the contents smelled, an amalgam of sugary things. It was all too much and performed much like a flavored Hookah.

I asked the misses about the room note, and she correctly guessed it was a cake/frosting smell or something caramel, so to this blend's credit it is accurate on the nose. I can't say it was bad, but I just felt duped for paying twice as much for what likely a bulk Lane product with even more artificial seasoning.

When people talk about goopy aromatics, this is what they are describing. It's sticky wet to the touch and smells strongly of cupcakes. It's pretty darn tasty I must say. I fun gimmick tobacco to give to your friend at the bonfire who doesn't usually smoke a pipe. My complaint is that I had to dry it out so that it would stay lit and burn well, and after I dried it, it lost a ton of it's flavor and sort of tasted like slightly sweet nothing. Virtually no tobacco taste whatsoever. In my opinion, it's not worth the money.
