G. L. Pease Gaslight
(3.32)
From Gregory Pease: "Deep, rich and full flavored, Gaslight burns very slowly, delivering a lingering, satisfying smoke for the true connoisseur of latakia based blends. The red Virginias present a background of natural sweetness, whilst fine Orientals provide just the right amount of spice. I like it best sliced thinly, rubbed out and packed loosely in smaller bowls for a satisfying, surprisingly long-lasting smoke." Easily sliced, easily rubbed out and easily packed.
Notes: This is the 7th blend in the Old London Series.

I went into this blend with high hopes but after every smoke this just strikes me as yet another medium English blend. I don't get the heavy latakia others have. It seems Latakia light to me. The Oriental spiciness comes through nicely but without any variance while the Virginia's just seem to hold it together in a beigne fashion. It's not bad, it's just not notable in anyway. Let me put it this way, I'll finish out the tin because its not bad enough to throw away but I wouldn't buy it again.

This is my first review, and it is the first because out of all tobaccos I've smoked this is one of two which I find unpleasant, and had high hopes for.
Upon opening the tin I got a very strong ammonia smell, my first smoke was simply unpleasant ammonia and very strong Latakia. After letting the two blocks air a bit the smell became like sticking your head in a new leather bag.
The smoke seems unidimensional for me, a lot of Latakia, some orientals but overall very dry, and lacking the depth and complexity of Nightcap (my standard for English blends). I thought things could improve by letting it dry more, cutting it more fine, or more coarse, but unfortunately not.
While I understand this tobacco IS a high-quality product, it is not for me. It doesn't scratch my itch for Latakia because ever since the idea of ammonia got into me every bowl (finished the tin now) tasted the same. Letting it dry after cutting helps a bit but it never became a pleasurable bowl for me. I even considered shredding it and using it for blending but didn't do it in the end as I know the case where you pick out a specific taste and can't ever shake it afterward, so it'd colour anything I'd mix it with.
