G. L. Pease Gaslight

(3.32)
From Gregory Pease: "Deep, rich and full flavored, Gaslight burns very slowly, delivering a lingering, satisfying smoke for the true connoisseur of latakia based blends. The red Virginias present a background of natural sweetness, whilst fine Orientals provide just the right amount of spice. I like it best sliced thinly, rubbed out and packed loosely in smaller bowls for a satisfying, surprisingly long-lasting smoke." Easily sliced, easily rubbed out and easily packed.
Notes: This is the 7th blend in the Old London Series.

This GLP offering is nicely presented and I found it to be very easy to prepare. The blocks are moist and require some dry time once sliced, but I do enjoy working with pressed tobacco cakes.

At charring light the smoke is delicate and creamy and the tone is full of warmth. There are some wonderfully complex and exotic flavors right from the start, all of which are centered around a semi-sweet round bottom note hinting at a deep roasted espresso-like flavor. The latakia is tempered to the point of being obscured and there's very little of the pine pitch flavor so prominent in most latakia heavy blends. Gaslight is also the very epitome of smooth.

By mid-bowl the flavors build up nicely and an almost overwhelming bright leathery flavor develops. The spiciness that I expect from most GLP mixtures also makes an appearance, and it's probably the most compelling aspect of the blend. The spiciness is somewhat unique and affects my whole palate and not just my tongue. By this point the tobacco flavor is what I would categorize as strong yet enjoyable but with an assertive burnt/bitter quality to it. The flavors are still well balanced and the smoke remains silky smooth.

Past mid-bowl, things fall apart a bit. With a hearty burley-like flavor, bitterness begins to reign leaving my mouth feeling quite dry. Perhaps this is the product of some really intense Turkish leaf? Either way, the end bowl flavor is not exactly what I would categorize as desirable and I am hoping this will mellow with age.

Both tobacco flavor and nicotine strength are a firm medium with nicotine pushing medium-strong. I do like this blend, I think it's good. I have socked a few tins away and look forward to seeing how it tastes in the future.

This is a fine blend, but after smoking through an entire tin I just can't find anything outstanding about it. I dig the presentation and like slicing the brownies. The tin aroma is not as enticing as other Latakia blends I've known, but that is a minor issue. It lights and burns well, a really easy smoke. The flavors of woody latakia and slightly sweet VA are discernable, but somehow don't all fit together to create a crescendo to greatness.

Mr Pease and others produce many wonderful blends in a similar range, and I guess it ultimately comes down to personal taste as to which one 'sings' for the pipeman and those that don't. In the case of Gaslight, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend trying it... but for me it just doesn't hit the right notes to be a keeper. 2.5/4 stars.

Strong stuff. Really smokey. I taste everything it says are in the ingredients on steroids. It has a lot of nicotine compared to other Full English's I've had. I've had McClelland's bulk Full English, all the Frog Morton's, most of the dunhill's and a few C&D blends.

Obviously, it kind of reminds me of the preparation for jackknife plug. I've shaved it for a few bowls, then just decided to cut the whole thing up and mix and store it. I recommend this because when I smoked it as cut flakes from the plug, I got a certain dimensionality to the smoke. Like, ok here's the Latakia, here's the oriental, then here's the Virginia. Not really a mix, but more of a dimension by itself, then the next, then the next, with Latakia being the most dominant part, then oriental spice (almost kentucky strength perique taste), then finally a nice Virginia puff every so often.

Mixing it up makes it more blended and seems to be less obviously one or the other tobacco burning at the time of the puff. Still, I'd say this smoke is like spicy Latakia with a hint of Virginia.

The GL Pease blends I've tried have all been crafted works with obvious strength and character. I never have a problem knowing this is complex exquisite blending, a bit more advanced if you will than others.

That being said, it has such complexity that there's not just that one great thing about the tobacco that makes it taste awesome. Maybe I'm being too simple, but it's kind of like chocolate. A pure awesome piece of milk chocolate is totally awesome. It may taste good with nuts, sprinkles, strawberries, syrup, etc., but you could almost get to the point where the cacophony of all combined elements overwhelms the original taste of chocolate. It's in there somewhere and all this stuff is good, but maybe I just wanted to taste some chocolate? If that makes sense.

Now, maybe if I loved Latakia I might appreciate more a Latakia blend like this that tastes overwhelmingly spiced and nic'd up, but it's not my fave toby. So, this just tastes like the fullest english blend I've tried so far and kind of knocks me down a bit with all that is going on.

It's a contemplative smoke. I need to be sitting down and appreciating this blend, but it's not a sit back and watch a movie, or read the paper type smoke for me. It's just missing that dominant taste of goodness and replaces it with a great masterpiece of a blend that makes me think too much while I'm getting dizzy.......lol. I like it, but its maybe a bit more inclined towards the guys who have been really smoking a lot longer than me. I say this because, I think in most instances I'd probably rather reach for the Frog Morton. I still give it a good rating though because its truly a masterpiece of flavors, just maybe that's not my style so much with Latakia.

G L Pease Gaslight is a sojourn into sweet smoke and spice, with a bit of a nicotine kick. A 2-ounce tin comes in the form of two 1-oz bricks of basically torn whole leaf, well-compressed but not crushed to any great density. The bricks are easily peeled in layers that need to be pinched apart a bit and then rolled out with the fingertips. The secret to maximum enjoyment of this blend lies in just the right rub-out and moisture content. It has to be Goldilocks hydrated, not moist/damp right from the tin nor over-dried. I find that about 10-15 minutes of dry-out time is optimal. Another tip for the perfect smoke of Gaslight is to use a briar or cob pipe with a tall, narrow chamber and to keep the portion small. When prepared as described here this is a real treat for the Latakia lover with a discriminating palate. A wonderfully outdoorsy experience.

G. L. Pease - Gaslight.

My kake arrived in two pieces of equal size. Because just rubbing with my fingers means there's still some larger leaf like pieces in the mix I used my coffee grinder; easy, peasy!

There's a lot of reviews for this so loads has been said already, but my initial thought was 'amazing'. The Latakia and Orientals are balanced impeccably, with a small amount of Virginia sweetness. The taste deepens in quite a short space of time, it begins to steady after about a third of a bowl; of course, that's subjective, you may have a different experience. It burns brilliantly, leaving very little dottle, giving off a cool smoke that doesn't bite.

This is strange: I consider myself to be a bit of a light weight with nicotine, lately it only takes the slightest amount to hit the spot. But I find this milder than most reviewers: mild to medium. I share the common view on room-note, though: tolerable.

A remarkable blend.

Highly recommended.

I am an old guy who have been smoking pipe for 50 years. I still miss the old British blends such as the real Dunhill and the real Sobranie. Now I found that Gaslight is, as some reviewers noticed, that this "old fashion" style blend is going back to the good old times. Is not similar to the old brands but could well coexisted with them. I it is a very well balanced mixture and it is perfectly tolerable to my sensitive tongue.

Gadlight might just be the most confusing English blend in Pease's lines in my experience. The latakia is dominant, but the taste is mild with some additional cocoa aroma. The flavor sometimes appears blank to me. Could not get the complex and deep aspects of this one. I only try the 0.5OZ sample bag that I should get more to appreciate this blend.

The dark and pungent plugs have a strong smell of Latakia. I prefer to put chunks in my pipe, light it and smoke. A long, cool smoke that is very demanding on the taste buds. Earthy, creosote like flavors assail your palate, creating only one idea...I want some more. Sometimes a nutty, Kentucky like flavor is felt in the smoke and then we are back to a very full bodied Latakia mixture. It's not a "Balkan", the Orientals are not subtle or dominating but a strong English in the vein of Dunhill's Nightcap. A fall and wintertime smoke, that could actually be enjoyed after a hearty lunch as it's all about powerful flavors and not a nicotine bomb.

All reviews here, spot on to my experience....so my added comments would be: The raw cake again had the rich Latakia smokiness, but long enough a faint fruity (peach?) smell breaks through. Exotic, fragrant flavours. When lit, definite softer Latakia (smokiness).

Well crafted moist tobacco. Great tin note. Benefits from about 20-30 minutes drying time. Right off the initial light you can tell this is a full body English. Great flavor, gets a little bitter towards the end of the bowl especially if puffed too hard. Pack loosely.
