Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Bosun Cut Plug

(3.32)
With only slightly over 50% (54%) flue-cured Virginias from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi, and 31% dark fired leaf, this is a fairly strong smoke. The addition of some sweeter sun cured leaf from Malawi, and the rich cigar type notes from the dark air cured Indian grade help to round off the blend. The special Virginia casings complement the top notes derived from the addition of sharper flavours including oil of cloves and rose geranium.

Very interesting blend this is. I like its presentation in broken flake and it can be smoked as moist. Its soapy flavour reminds me of Ennerdale. As a matter of fact, it is quite similar to it in both strength and flavour. This is a must if you like Lakeland type tobaccos (English aromatics). Also, I cannot detect any tongue-bite and the flue-cured/Virginia leaf composition seems to be quite balanced. I guess I would've enjoyed more something more leaning onto the burley side of things, but I cannot find any loose ends or faults in it, so I am rating this with 4 stars.

Again, I’ve had the generous help from a friend who gave me some 20-25grms of this.

Bosun Cut Plug is one of the best examples of the Lakeland so-called soapies. In its genre, I have appreciated its balance in both flavouring & strenght, none of the two going after the unbearable limit of say a Condor.

Very very much smooth & cool. Medium to full in strenght and flavour. The fired cured leaf is definitely there but never jumps out to prevail over the flue cured. Better smoked in a contemplative mood (and possibly in meers, which I didn’t) to avoid some moderately bitter aftertaste.

Not a blend I would smoke often, but surely the blend I would consider when in the mood for a Lakeland scented.

I love this stuff, after my everyday tobaccos, Erinmore Mixture and Condor this is definitely my favourite tobacco. Not to strong, doesn't burn too hot and for me there is no tongue bite.
It's floral, fruity flavour is a dream and an hour puffing on this must be like being in heaven.

BCP represents the Lakeland component of my tobacco rotation, when I want something aromatic. The tobacco itself is top shelf as it smokes cool down to the bottom of the bowl and has zero bite. The Virginias are not too sweet, which would otherwise be overwhelming given the considerable aromatics.

I love the taste and floral aroma. I can't smell the cloves but it certainly has that clovy aftertaste in the mouth. Reminds me of Clove Chewing Gum from days long gone.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the N factor is more toberable than Corniston. (Dark Flake made me reel.)

If you're looking for something aromatic but want a full-bodied smoke, you can't do better.

Yum, yum, yum. If you like scented flakes then you're gonna love this one!

The overall comparison to St Bruno that some reviewers have made seems like a pretty good one to me. The obvious difference is that this one is flowery whereas St Bruno is fruity. Additionally, whilst I can understand the good saint being labelled as soapy, there is no soap here. Honestly, I think some people just automatically peg any strong, scented british flake as being soapy without giving it a fair trial.

So, no soap, but definitely lots of flowers! This really does have a flavour and room aroma that my dear old mum would describe as being like "a tart's boudoir". It works! The overall impression ends up being very sweet and almost dessert-like. Those 'sharper flavours' mentioned in the blend description do punch through, especially when the tobacco is fresh, and help to liven up the taste buds. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some vanilla in there too somewhere.

In the pipe this is a very well behaved tobacco. It burns slow and cool with few relights required and leaves naught but a fine, powdery grey ash. The balance of different tobacco types is spot on for me, and you can taste both the flue and fire cured leaf contributing to the overall experience.

Criticisms? Well, with such a distinctive flavour it probably isn't one you are going to want to smoke every day. The powerful top flavours do mean it can become a bit monotonous as there isn't that much evolution of taste down the bowl.

With all that said, this is a winner for me. Probably my favourite GH&Co scented flake so far, although I still have plenty left to try...now there's a nice thought!

Recommended to scented flake lovers. Others should avoid!

This review gonna be my first impression after smoking 3 bowls of this mixture.

I was gifted by my tobacconist with a good sample of this tobacco sold in bulk.
First of all, after sniffing the tobacco i feel the smell not that strong, the Lakeland doesn´t appear so strong here. The presentation is beauty, really dark tobacco with a good moisture that IMO was ready to smoke.

It´s easy to fill the chamber, it´s easy to light and keep it lit. Just perfect.
Once it ready, the Lakeland starts to appear in the background but the tobacco flavor never leave the spotlight, so i´d consider it as a light aromatic.

The nicotine here can be a problem for those who are sensitive which is not my case. So be aware of it when smoking, for me it is a good morning punch but i can see who would prefer smoke it after lunch. You can expect a strong body tobacco that develops even more during the smoke.

No tongue bite at all, no bubbling at the end, doesn´t overheat the bowl, this is a classic recipe that everyone should give it a try. I wish i could give it a score closer to perfect but for some reason, it doesn´t touch my heart as Bob´s chocolate Flake, maybe i like a bit stronger casing+topping to satisfy my sweet tooth.

3,5 stars. Go for it mate!

This is a very nice traditional and complex blend. Very soft tobacco, with different aromas such as clove, but also some woody and floral flavors. It is a taste acquired over time.

This is a partially broken flake that comes apart into long thin strings of flake when handled. When rubbed out, the individual constituent leaves of yellow, brown, orange, and near black are revealed. The rose geranium is evident in the pouch, the smoke, one’s sinuses, one’s beard etc. I could not discern the cloves no matter how much I concentrated. The rose geranium scent bowls over any other toppings and the tobacco to boot.

The smoke was floral and incense like at its best. At its worst, the geranium conspired with other other ingredients to create a taste and smell that was disturbingly close to baby powder. The second half of the bowl yielded some nice cigar like notes and black pepper spice.

Despite the use of fire cured leaf, there was only a trace of smokiness perceptible. In fact the fire cured was probably more evident in the room note. I understand that Lakeland style tobacco is an acquired taste, but this one was dominated so aggressively by the rose geranium that the underlying tobaccos, which I am sure are of excellent quality, are drowned out.

After falling in love with Dark Flake Unscented and a few other blends in the GH & Co. Lineup, I decided to try this one as well. Anything with Dark Fired Leaf will get my attention nowadays. This is a ready rubbed version of a very successful plug, which I haven't been able to get my hands on as of yet.

The tin note is quite bready I can smell the topping, especially the clove. The smell of this blend reminds me of everything I like about the autumn: warm spices, smoke, bread, and leaves. The cut is similar to a rubbed out flake. I like to rub mine out a little bit more before I pack my pipe. I don't find this one very wet, but I still do my ritual of packing the pipe before bed and smoking it on the morrow. It will take a light well and burn evenly and slowly which I appreciate with an aromatic blend.

I'm not a huge aromatic smoker by any stretch of the imagination, but there are a few blends I can consistently come back to and this is one of them. In the puff I can taste the Clove and the Rose but the spice and intensity of the Dark Fired is still there with the Virginia's carrying that topping on a wave of breadiness. Instead of delicate it comes across meaty to me, not in terms of taste but robustness. I think it smells pleasant, and the nicotine is a medium, and I want just a hair more with the taste of this one.

A good blend and one I will buy again.

Bag note is quite floral, sweet and spicy. They call this a broken flake but my 4 oz bag was mostly flakes. Rubs out easy is a bit damp when fresh. This defiantly starts out with the Lakeland soap as the primary flavor. Its quite floral as you progress. Quite close to smoking potpourri. If you can make it past the floral stage it mellows out quite a bit. Don't get me wrong the floral taste is still there, it just recedes enough to taste the tobaccos. This is quite strong tobacco as well. Nic hit is medium to strong and the flavor is full. Stays smooth throughout the entire bowl and burns quite slow and cool. If you are looking for floral flavored tobacco (Lakeland) this would be a great one to try. Not sure I could smoke this all day but its certainly an interesting switch.
