Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Bosun Cut Plug

(3.32)
With only slightly over 50% (54%) flue-cured Virginias from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi, and 31% dark fired leaf, this is a fairly strong smoke. The addition of some sweeter sun cured leaf from Malawi, and the rich cigar type notes from the dark air cured Indian grade help to round off the blend. The special Virginia casings complement the top notes derived from the addition of sharper flavours including oil of cloves and rose geranium.

Wow. Bosun Cut Plug in my opinion is one of the best Lakeland blends that I have had to date. Not as over powerfully scented as Ennerdale and not as powerful in strength as Dark Flake Scented. BCP is right in the sweet spot between the two, and how sweet it is.

The tobacco is fat meaty dark and medium brown broken flake that will need a little bit of drying time off the bat. The tin note is wonderful and very layered. You will need to take your time smelling it to get what this is all about. The first aromas that present themselves is classic floral Lakeland essence but, it not overly applied. As you continue to savor the aroma the dark fired makes itself known with its earthy smokiness and finally as you fluff the tobacco around in the jar the tobacco is enveloped in a wonderful spicy clove fragrance. I cannot detect any of the natural Virginia smells as the topping really dominates.

In the smoke however, the sweet Virginians make themselves known and greatly compliment the topping. This is a very smooth and flavorful smoke. No harsh notes whatsoever and no bite at all. This is a great blend to relax with and enjoy in picking out the different and unique flavors. The after taste is also very pleasant and lingering. It’s really good.

This is a top notch, full flavored tobacco indicative of what G&H regularly produces. The cut plug is more like a broken flake to me and it rubs out easily enough. This has a nice Anise topping and it has the typical Lakeland toppings as well, so anyone with an aversion to either of those may want to steer around it, I find it downright tasty though. I rubbed it out slightly before packing and it burned fairly easily with only a few relights and never bit me. This tobacco is strong too, so I recommend smoking it with some food in your belly. This makes for a perfect after dinner smoke for me, so I enjoy smoking it as a regular part of my rotation.

Brilliant blend. I respectfully submit fans of St. Bruno Flake and Walnut Flake will undoubtedly be pleased, at least this fan of those treasured blends was. I find BCP to be somewhere in the middle of the aforementioned tobaccos. BCP for me produces an exceedingly delightful creamy smoke carrying with it the zest of cloves, the sweetness of first-rate virginia and that wonderful St. Bruno flavour muted just slightly by a couple of degrees. This is the blend I day-dream of while sitting in 5 o'clock traffic en route home after a long days work. Bosun Cut Plug is a gem and I pray I'll never be without it. Thank You Rich at 4noggins for stocking this fantastic tobacco.

Gawith Hoggarth Bosun cut plug - The combination of the flue- cured and dark fired Virginias hit a sweet spot on my palate for sure . The air cured indian leaf adding a little richness and bold spice . The lakeland rose topping and clove start out strong but fade out fairly quick and I am left with a sweet smooth smoke . Gawith and Hoggarth do some great things with Virginia leaf . There is some sweet sun cured Virginia in this as well . I think it’s the dark fired Virginia that makes the blends so pleasing . My cellar is getting a little ridiculous at this point but I would love to have a lb of this in it . Lovely Virginia blend . 4

Very interesting blend this is. I like its presentation in broken flake and it can be smoked as moist. Its soapy flavour reminds me of Ennerdale. As a matter of fact, it is quite similar to it in both strength and flavour. This is a must if you like Lakeland type tobaccos (English aromatics). Also, I cannot detect any tongue-bite and the flue-cured/Virginia leaf composition seems to be quite balanced. I guess I would've enjoyed more something more leaning onto the burley side of things, but I cannot find any loose ends or faults in it, so I am rating this with 4 stars.

I love this stuff, after my everyday tobaccos, Erinmore Mixture and Condor this is definitely my favourite tobacco. Not to strong, doesn't burn too hot and for me there is no tongue bite.
It's floral, fruity flavour is a dream and an hour puffing on this must be like being in heaven.

BCP represents the Lakeland component of my tobacco rotation, when I want something aromatic. The tobacco itself is top shelf as it smokes cool down to the bottom of the bowl and has zero bite. The Virginias are not too sweet, which would otherwise be overwhelming given the considerable aromatics.

I love the taste and floral aroma. I can't smell the cloves but it certainly has that clovy aftertaste in the mouth. Reminds me of Clove Chewing Gum from days long gone.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the N factor is more toberable than Corniston. (Dark Flake made me reel.)

If you're looking for something aromatic but want a full-bodied smoke, you can't do better.

I'm a fan of GH's Brown Flake Scented/Aromatic and wanted to try this offering. Nice broken flake presentation in my 2 ounce sample, a mild, sweet fragrance (not too floral/perfumy) coming from the bag and not at all soapy. Loaded and took to the match quite well. Smoking properties were fine. This didn't smoke hot at all. I tasted the clove, albeit that was mild. The overall mouthfeel was mildly sweet and spicy with a nice taste of rose geranium, and not over the top with that. Mild cigar notes definitely present. Nicotine creeps up slowly, eventually making its presence known. A slow smoking cadence is advised. All in all, a delightful smoke and one I will revisit. As with all GH fare, difficult to come by. 4 stars.

You can skip to JimInks's review, my experience was exactly as he put it.

I was unsure if to order this one, primarily because cloves can be delightful in small doses and terrible if overdone.

The smell from the bag is geranium and cloves, sweet spicy, tangy - far less tangy than Dark Flake Scented, but there are similarities.

The presentation is typical Gawith, thick cut dark brown broken flakes, heavy and oily. Strangely enough it catches straight from the tin, and did not need any relights until the heel. Similar to Dark Flake Scented, it doesn't seem to need drying. The broken flake turns to stone before burning to fine gray ash and does not leave almost any moisture in the bowl. Gave a very long, very cool smoke.

The taste: as it smells with a Virginia background. I will start from the Virginia before going to the meat of the blend because with these heavily scented Lakelands I can rarely taste any of the tobacco: it reminds me a lot of G&H Curly Cut Deluxe, somewhat sour and spicy. Now to the meat: rose geranium and cloves, a ratio of about 60/40 in terms of dominance, yet they work beautifully together. There's some bitterness and tanginess coming from the geranium, but less than in Dark Flake Scented. There's also some heavy but sharp sweetness and spicyness from the clove, I'd say it is not a sweet blend, but it FEELS like one. It reminded me of the incense used in the Greek Orthodox Church. It is very satisfying, the flavouring does not go away after three puffs like Danish and American aromatics do, and similar to Coniston Cut Plug you can regulate the balance between tobacco and flavouring by pushing it a bit. Will not bite, but does get bitter if pushed.

I need to compare with Dark Flake Scented, a blend I really like very much. It's not as strong in nicotine, but it is full in flavour, and possibly more nuanced - though less than Coniston Cut Plug

The smell of the smoke from the pipe is not very nice, it's quite acrid, but all my smoking is out of doors.

Can't see this being an all-day or everyday smoke, it is quite intense and the aftertaste is lingering, but like other members of its family, when you are after Lakelands nothing else will do.
