Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Black Irish X Unsliced
(2.80)
All Gawith & Hoggarth twist tobacco varieties are manufactured by the same spinning process using dark fired wrapper leaves. The filler for Black Irish X is predominantly dark fired leaf with the addition of a small percentage of dark air cured Indian leaf. They are therefore strong tobaccos. Black Twist, because the cooking process removes some of the stronger tar and nicotine elements, provides a mellower smoke than the brown twist.

A great tobacco, to be smoked only in some occasions.
Cutting the plug is very easy, using a very sharp knife, and rubbing it out is also very easy.
I filled the bowl of my Mayfair ( small bowl, i dont dare to smoke in a bigger bowl ! ), and unwrapped a few leafs of the plug for a better lighting operation.
Usual procedure in lighting, a good charring light, tamp, re-light it, and off we go... Needed only 2 re-lights during the smoke.
From the start you get what you want with this tobacco, a pure smoke, just pure virginia tobacco, no flavoring whatsoever, no complexity at all, just a plain ride all the way. A very smooth and slow smoke, it took me almost 80 minutes to end the bowl, drawing slowly and with quiet pace. No bite at all, even if you push it.
I must advise you to smoke this very slowly and with a full stomach ( after a good meal and with a good 15 years Malt Scotch is great ), or else you'll get nausea and get sick.
The nicotine rush is big, very big. Mid-way, you feel very very relaxed. If you have to stand up after the smoke, do it very very slowly or you'll get a head rush and get dizzy.
Room note is strong, still tolerable for those used to having smoke around them. Around here only NC gets negative remarks.
My first try at a big streght tobacco, turned out to be a great ride, though it might be too much for a newbie.

Essentially the same as G&H black twist sliced, somewhat easier to work with than that soupy mess. I can cut a thick coin, further cube cut it, rub it out, and it burns relatively well without dry time. I love it similarly to black twist sliced for its similarly unique attributes. Literally tastes like charred beef fat, I don't mean that metaphorically. The rope here does have a distinct herbal scent, not what i know as a Lakeland though, and it's barely if at all coming through in the smoke. This first smoke is sweeter than the sliced version. I think i have to keep both of them at 4 star, even though i greatly prefer the rope format. Some people clearly love the sliced, and moisture probably varies quite a bit order by order. Aside from that, they're essentially the same.

Package note of pungent salty barbeque, smoky and slightly tart. The 3/4-inch-wide rope is jet black. Tobacco is wet, prep entails a razor or thin sharp knife and cutting thin coins for rubbing out, and drying. Burns is slow with numberous relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is mild and no flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with notes earth, musty chard wood, leather, maduro cigar, faint burnt spices, and a moderate peppery retro. Dark fired leaf is leading dark air cured Indian leaf through the fires of hell. Room note is strong, but not offensive and aftertaste is great.
