Another hit from Sutliff! It packs and lights well, and has a decent amount of nicotine for an aromatic. Sutliff has pleasantly surprised me once again with this one. The burley can be picked up in the tin note. It's a nutty, sweet aroma that made my mouth water. After lighting a bowl, you can taste several different flavors, such as vanilla, chocolate, nuts, and a dark fruitiness. It smokes cool, and the flavor stays pretty consistent throughout the bowl. The room note is pretty amazing as well! This is definitely one of my favorite Sutliff blends, and I find myself reaching for it more and more. Pick up a tin if you like a high-quality American-style aromatic!

To a pipe newbie like myself, the tin note of this stuff is pretty great. Definitely an aromatic, with notes of vanilla, plum, raisin, and maybe a hint of rum. Not overpoweringly cased, but definitely present.

Upon opening a fresh tin, the Charlemagne was quite moist. I was in a bit of a rush, so was only able to let a small amount air-dry for five minutes or so before loading into my MM cob.

I put flame to the bowl, charred, tamped, and re-lit, and was rewarded with gobs of sweet, white smoke. To my uneducated palate, the cavendish and burley are driving this one. A very mild taste that is smooth but offers an ample amount of smoke.

There are definite notes of something sweet, almost nutty/chocolate. I'm guessing this is partly the casing, and partly the burley. There are undertones of some vanilla and dried fruit in there too.

I had to put flame to the bowl two or three more times before finding the bottom, but was able to smoke the whole bowl nonetheless. No tongue bite, even through I probably smoked it a bit more quickly than I should have.

I really enjoyed this one, and will come back to it for sure. If you're not a fan or aromatics, steer clear of this one. Personally, I'm thinking this will make a great baccy for smoking slowly (reading/etc) and relaxing. Light, sweet, tasty. The room note is quite pleasant too, so this will probably become one of my go-tos when smoking around others.

I recently began smoking a pipe and I picked 2 blends to try from Altadis' Sutliff Private Stocks (Charlemagne, Bosphorous Cruise...both were excellent values in my inexperienced opinion.) I was drawn to Charlemagne by the simple description in the tagline and I must say that whoever wrote that description deserves a raise!

The fragrance of Charlemagne reminds me of the tobacco my grandfather used to smoke. It really perfumes the room with a sweet smell that is incredibly pleasant, yet manly. The smoke is also sweet in the beginning, but it loses much of its taste about halfway through the bowl. The remainder of the smoke is not harsh tasting, however. I've found it to be a very pleasant smoke while reading.

The tobacco is not difficult for a beginner to light and it burns well. Be warned that the mixture does have a bit of a bite on the tongue, but it's not anything major.

I would be very interested to see other reviews of this mixture by more experienced pipe smokers as it is my favorite so far.
