Peterson Nightcap
(3.46)
A rich blend of Virginia, Oriental, and Latakia tobaccos, intended to be smoked late in the day. It's a smoky, delightfully satisfying mixture, with a hint of Perique added to enhance the bouquet.
Notes: Formerly known as Dunhill Nightcap, STG has changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

This mixture was a pretty good smoke. The tin aroma was a bit unusual-somwhat like a campfire smell. Could this possibly be from fire-cured tobacco? Maybe from Latakia curing? I found Dunhill's EMP had an identical tin aroma.
I did not detect any casing in the flavor. However, the tobacco had a somewhat of a sticky feel to it, which seems indicative of some casing or additive.
The nicotine content was impressive. I found the second half of the bowl to have a peppery type taste usually present when nicotine is high. Therefore, this would be a good blend for a new convert to the pipe from cigarettes.
The blend burned fairly well, but was a little tough to get going-I presume from the sticky/moist nature of the tobacco.
All in all pretty good stuff, but I must confess I prefer my favorite-Prince Albert!

This is a legendary tobacco, but not one that I smoke often these days. I went through quite a bit of it when I was younger, but over time decided it was just too monochromatic for me. In short, I consider this to be an unexciting latakia bomb and don't plan on smoking it again. Other smokers, however, really like this blend, and I suggest trying it out for yourself (along with all the other Dunhill blends).
The main flavor here is latakia, but there's more than enough VA to add some much-needed sweetness. But what really sets this blend apart from the pack is the use of perique. The famed Louisana leaf is known for being something of a chameleon, of course, as it can taste like peppers in one blend and fruit in the next. In Nightcap, the flavor is definitely that of jalapeno pepper, and it adds an interesting dimension to the smoke. As I indicated earlier, I would never describe this blend as complex but I do believe the term "deep" could be accurately used here.

As quality as it is, I only give two stars as the flavor last, and last,....and last......and last. your mouth, and all that enters it... will taste of it for a good while. When the flavor wont come out with tooth brush, baking soda, washrag, mouth rinse, its just too strong for often use.

Stout, tasty, and top-heavy with Perique. Won't make my rotation as there are other blends in the same niche I prefer. If you love a heavy Perique presence in English blends, add a star or two. (This review is of the Murray's version.)

Nightcap is a good, moderately powerful English blend with a heavy dose of perique. It packs easy and burns easy. It doesn't bite, though my throat does get a little irritated sometimes when I smoke it. Originally introduced in 1951, it is considered by some to be the ultimate English. I find it to be pleasant, but generally overrated. There are a number of C&D, Peretti, GLP, and Pipeworks and Wilke English blends I'd smoke over this one. And its nicotine content isn't as high, in my estimation, as others find it.

If you are a fan of strong smokey blends, give Nightcap a try. I was not prepared for exactly what this blend is like in terms of strength, and it packs quite a whallop for someone who was giving a shot to a non-aromatic for the first time. I think that if I was to develop a taste for Latakia blends, I might come back to this one sometime, but if you are not a big fan of Latakia I would not suggest buying this blend.

I must admit, I was a bit nervous trying this tobacco first off. I thought id break out in sweats or something, but I am happy to report, I tried it and dashed my opinions on the rocks of truth...
This tobacco is not bad. It's rich, long lasting, full and smoky. Its a tobacco for under the stars.
I loaded up my stanwell Lord Churchwarden, and happily puffed away, enjoying the latakia, and tasting the subtle perique... fantastic.
It could use a little more perique IMHO...
I have to be honest though, this is an extremely latakia dominated blend - not for the faint hearted, and not a daily smoker for me. This is more of a treat, for those nights when my cravings WILL be quenched - by hook, crook or by nightcap!
UPDATE _ JANUARY 2006
Still a bit too strong for me everyday - but fascinatingly, the tin ive had opened for a year now, still hasnt dried out and ruined itself! Amazing!
Still far too much latakia for me - less lat, more Perique and this would be breathtaking!

Everyone else has already said just about all that needs to be said about this tobacco. For me, it was just too much latakia (didn't know there was such a thing until I tried this blend). Overall, a good tobacco to be sure but I would have to suggest London Mixture as a slightly lighter better alternative.

Not a bad smoke, but I was expecting something "fuller" as advertised. Suprisingly flat, but mellow. It is indeed suitable for a late evening pipe.
