HU Tobacco Director's Cut

(3.51)
Director's Cut… If you are talking about traditional tobacco blending, twisted tobacco has to be mentioned. In former times, tobacco was spun into an endless roll and then cut in order to increase durability. Nowadays this special production process only plays a significant role with regard to taste. The traditional Virginia/Perique Curly Cut forms its basis, being in prime condition as a rope, before cut into curlies. The very expressive and sweet Virginia grades in connection with a strong Perique core of the Curly Cuts make an interesting blend, together with the Burley grades and the sugary Virginia Loose Cut. Underlining the robust and elemental character of this Director's Cut, a whiff of fire-cured Virginia renders the final touch to this blend. The result is a slightly sweet and spicy blend, surprising with tremendous varieties in taste. The Director's Cut is attractive for those who are looking for the very special taste adventure. …strong, spicy, multi-layered
Notes: Although it includes a touch of burley and matured Kentucky (instead of the more common 'bullseye' core of cavendish in similar brands), this is primarily a VaPer blend in character.

This seems to me to be the strongest of the HU perique suite . I would not call it a perique bomb but it seems to dominate the blend . The tin note is outstanding making the smoker keen for a bowl . The broken flake format is easy to rub out and pack . The smoker has the option not to rub at all creating a longer smoke . It does very well in a large bowl because of the complex nature of the tobacco . The Virginias are of good quality and provide the stage for the condiments . The Kentucky is not noticeable by them selves but add a certain spice to the mixture . Mr Perique is , of course , the star of the show . A good portion of raisin and fig creates a strong and satisfying smoke that is amazingly deep and complex . An excellent choice after dinner and a terrific outdoor smoke as well . Few VaPers can stand up to this one . Seems to smoke best in an apple shape but , then again , it was great in the many different shapes I have used to smoke it . This is , to me , one of the great tobaccos .

look: mix of coins, readdy rubbed baccy, some broken flake

tin/jar smell: very grassy, slightly sweet and zesty, I cannot really find any more words to describe the smell because it was pretty unique.

Moisture: Mine was a little dry, but good to smoke

Smoke flavour: Frankly speaking I didnt expect Kentucky and Burley to be so much perceptible. Im not gonna lie, I am not a fan of Kentucky and Burley tobacco so I didnt like it. The experience wasnt pleasant for me. Maybe because I packed the pipe wrongly? I did not really chop and mix the tobacco well so maybe thats why Kentucky dominated the mixture. I put the bacco in the cellar and I will come back to this blend soon so expect uptades.

This stuff is outstanding! I detect a very soft topping or casing that I can’t quite put my finger on, the best I can do is describe it as some type of very mellow vanilla and maybe some sort of spirit. This is a fun cut as it comes with coins, flakes, ribbon and a whole spectrum of colors ranging from a light golden to almost jet black. When smoking this, it’s going to be slight variations of the same theme due to the cut, you won’t ever get the same proportions in each bowl which I find absolutely exciting. You will always know you’re smoking Directors Cut but you’ll get different nuances in each pipe, so it’s exciting every time you pack a new bowl. HU has made it up in my top blending houses as they produce some of the finest blends on earth. This has a pleasing room note, medium in body and taste and I’d say the nic is in about the mild to medium range. The paint can tin (my favorite kind) keeps the tobacco moist for a good long while but you may want to transfer the contents into a jar if you plan on cellaring it long term. This is probably the finest blend I’ve smoked in this genre, just beautiful and highly recommended, in fact, it gets the essential stamp from Hawky.

Essential!

This blend is comprised of small coins and lose, stringy ribbons. I recommend letting them air dry for approximately 15 minutes. The tin note smells like raisins and figs. I filled the bowl by packing the loose strands between the coins. Upon lighting, I sense citrus, raisins, figs, traces of wood, something sweet (maybe molasses?) and nuts . Throughout the smoke, it’s savory sweet and moderately spicy. At times, it’s mouthwateringly sour. It burns at a moderate rate, and is not harsh. I’ve smoked about an ounce in various size/shaped briars, and all are favorable. The nicotine level is almost medium. It’s more than medium in body/taste. Director’s Cut is essentially a very robust VaPer, due to the burley and Kentucky tobaccos. If you enjoy stronger VaPer blends, I highly recommend it.

Director's Cut is an interesting mix of Va/Per Curlys & cut tobaccos like fire cured Virginia, Burley & Kentucky. The tin note is very subtle and hard to grasp to me. Just a tad of gentle, citrusy sweetness, accompanied by a tad of peppery spice if I stick my nose right into it. Even tho the tin note is very subtle, the tobacco is rich and full in it's variety of flavours!

I agree on the comparison to new Mac Barens VA/KY Three Nuns. I have only smoked new Three Nuns (MB Version) and the taste is pretty smiliar, yet much more complex and diversified! It's like a "Three Nuns PLUS". I'd imagine old Va/Per Three Nuns would taste like this.

Director's Cut comes along with a mildly sweetish, peppery taste profile that has a tad of a (pleasing) sour-tone. Slightly citrusy, a tad of fruit and earthy notes come from the Virginias. Paired with a slight taste of stoved-fruits & rich, deep pepper from the Perique. Rounded by woodsy, almost smoky, slightly nutty and cigar-ish Kentucky-notes. The Burley intesivies the Kentucky and adds a slight expands the nuttiness of the Kentucky, as well as adding a pinch of Burley-spice. The flavour profile is very complex and entertaining. There is a lot of flavour to detect and enjoy.

Even tho it's complex and full of flavours it's never overwhelming and also suitable for a relaxed smoke in the morning. If you don't concetrate on the backy you get a nice, pleasant smoke. If you DO concentrate on the tobacco, you get a outstanding, diverse and rich smoke, with lots of nuances to explore.

This backy isn't too strong, nor too weak. Very refined. All components were matched and married well.

Well made tobacco blend, that's interesting in taste and apperance. Satisfying in strenght and delicate in taste.

Smoking now from a sample bag given to me.

Broken coins and loose cut tobacco filled my sample bag. Soft, playable, and packed easily. Smelled like tobacco. Rich and natural tobacco.

The taste. My, my, there’s depth to this one. The Virginias are what I pick up on right away and they are sweet, tart, and bready however they are subdued by the woody, earthy, nutty, burley. The Perique offers some peppery spice and fruit on the retrohale added to the bready sweetness of the Virginia. It’s not too spicy. It has just the right amount of it to make itself known. The burley has a nutty flavor on the retrohale. The retrohale is nice and you will pick up a whole lot of of different tobaccos in it. The Kentucky is noticeable and adds a slight smokey spicy sweetness to this blend too.. All put together it’s quite nice. The topping does not retard the flavors and performance of the tobacco. Whatever it is I can’t make it out. Nic hit is there and is a solid medium maybe past that if you’re not used to it. Smoked all the way to ash. No bite no harshness.

Bready, fruity, nutty, woody, sweet and slightly spicy. This is a great combination and it is wonderfully blended. A natural tobacco experience with lots of depth and flavor. If I ran across of tin of this I would buy it. One of the best smokes I’ve ever had.

The star of this blend is the smokey Dark-fired Kentucky. Combined with a pleasantly sweet Virginia base and Perique, Directors Cut has an alluring tin note that keeps me coming back for more. It is a combination of Three Nuns-style coins and flakes, so I will generally rub it out to achieve consistency throughout the bowl. The flavor is much as one would expect from the tub note. Flavorful without being overpowering. Nicotine is present, but not strong. While I prefer it during cooler months, it's a blend I can smoke anytime. I have a very substantial cellar and Directors Cut is the blend I have the most of -- by far. Others have noted a change in the blend. I have noticed that the newest version seems to have a bit more tendency to bite.

Excellent tobacco, Director’s Cut fulfilled every positive review I had read before deciding to order a tin. The Perique is fragrant and stewed fruit sweet. The Kentucky leaf gives a nice heft and the Virginia carries the blend. I had tried to avoid the HU blends due to unavailability here in the U.S., but after so many comments on the forums and positive reviews here I put in an order for several of the best selling blends. If the rest of them are as good as Director’s Cut, I’m in trouble.
