Davidoff Scottish Mixture

(2.54)
Scottish Mixture’s smooth, flavorful and mild middle-cut blend is enduringly popular. The fresh and delicately flowery aroma comes from select grades of Virginia, burley, Kentucky and a small portion of Oriental tobaccos – refined with a dash of the finest Scotch whisky.

I have always respected Davidoff: for their fine cigars, and for their cigarettes. When I used to smoke cigarettes, theirs were the best. As a consequence, I couldn't help trying this pipe tobacco, the only blend in their line which is imported in Italy. Well, I would have hoped something better from this roughly-cut, scotch whiskey-flavored cavendish/burley... The tin aroma is overwhelmingly sweet, but the smoke isn't much: it is almost pungent, spicy, despite the only average strength. I like it moderately, but the main problem is that I grow quickly tired of it. Sometimes I don't even finish the bowl, also because it tends to burn a bit wet and bite slightly. The room aroma, despite the sweetness of the tin smell, is pungent, too, and not very pleasant to some. An average tobacco, rather nice if smoked slowly, but without the necessary appeal to make it enter in my "always to have at home" group.

UPDATE: Ten years later from my original review (and much more experience in pipe smoking), I have revisited this blend. It's cut thinner now than I remembered. And it's not a bad blend at all. Still tends to burn a bit hot, but no evident bite: actually a nice smooth tobacco. Not the most exciting one, but think Mac Baren Mixture with a little bit less sweetness and more nuttiness. Delicate and pleasant. Almost tempted to give it three stars!

Good quality tobacco, cased with Scotch whiskey. If you appreciate an aromatic smoke, this one is for you. It is similar to other whiskey cased mixtures (e.g., Radford?s Old Scotch), but perhaps with a little more body and depth. The tin aroma is too heavy for my taste, but my SLW finds it agreeable. It is easy to pack, but not that easy to light. I think there is PG in this one, as the first puffs tickle my nostrils and produce an astringent effect in the throat. It does not burn cool. The flavour is alright, in that it does taste of tobacco, but eventually the casing overpowers the taste and settles in the pipe (NB: if you don?t want your briar to taste of sweet Scotch for weeks, don?t try it!). All in all, this mixture is closer to Irish coffee than it is to tobacco or Scotch whisky. Not bad if you like a sweet, aromatic smoke. Personally, I would rather drink Scotch than smoke it.

A very quick burning tobacco, although this might have to do with the fact that the particular product had been preserved for at least four years in a half full mason jar.

Although not classified as a semi-aromatic I find the flavoring of the mixture to be quite noticeable, something that is not uncommon in Davidoff pipe tobaccos. It obscures the pureness of the tobaccos and paradoxically even of the added tastes themselves. The mixture does not easily cause tonguebite though and if one desires more added flavour, this will be a good buy. I notice predominantly the burley with some hint of whisky and not so much the virginas, kentucky and latakia.
