G. L. Pease Triple Play
(3.42)
Ripe red and bright flue cured tobaccos are joined by piquant Acadian perique and a balanced measure of smoky dark fired Kentucky. The leaf is pressed and matured in cakes before being cut into 2oz bars, resulting in a bold blend for Virginia and perique fans.
Notes: The second blend in the New World Series - Triple Play was introduced in May, 2011.
From GL Pease: After the wonderful reception of JackKnife Plug, more than a few of you asked for a Virginia/perique plug. Some suggested adding perique to JackKnife, which, of course, I tried, but the balance was wrong. The overall profile was nice, but the amount of dark fired leaf competed with, rather than enhanced the addition of perique. If enough perique was added, the Virginias got lost. After some fiddling with the percentages of the different Virginias, and reducing the amount of dark fired leaf, everything came wonderfully into balance, and the result is Triple Play.
Once again, the leaf is pressed and matured in cakes before being cut into 2oz bars. I think the results are fantastic, and this one will appeal to lovers of classic VA/perique blends, with the added fun of having it in plug form.

Straight from the tin, I try to consciously sip my tobaccos to maximise the blessings of St. Nic, plus for flavour and economy’s sake. Like all the rest, but more so, Triple Play benefits from gently slow consideration. As a straight VaPer man, I was a little wary of the Kentucky, but shouldn’t have been. Starts out middle of the road, but about midway things get stronger in every sense and this is where sipping becomes essential. As it’s forthright in strength, I am happy that it relights well - within reason.
I’m also glad I purchased the large tin!

If GL Pease was an actor the most poignant moment in his interview with James Lipton would be that moment when Lipton would turn to the audience and say dramatically with flare, 'and then you created triple play' and the audience would go crazy.. This is a fantastically flavorful blend of components.. Sweet, sour, musty, spicy.. yabadabado.. I recommend a good amount of dry time.. for me about 12 hours.. but your climate may vary.. I think it is better than most cigars ive smoked.. and most pipe tobacco.. it is freaking great..

Initial light presents a fairly balanced bouquet of the various included leaves with the pungent smokey Perique and dark-fired Kentucky forming the base. This is supported by the red Virginia, lending a naturally sweet molasses note. The overall impression is an oaky and sweet -yet earthy- dense smoke. The deep fermented leaves present a cigar-like aspect. The last third of the bowl highlights the inclusion of Oriental leaf. The bright flue-cured Virginia adds a subtle contrast to the low-toned base. This deserves slow puffing, and I recommend trying it in many different pipes, as the complexity with show differently with each change of \"venue\". Leathery, dense, sweet, mildly tangy. Masterfully blended, with the rich and satisfying taste of quality tobacco. Highly recommended. This is a VaPer you can smoke in the cold of winter. For those looking for comparison, it is the burly older brother to Newminster No. 403; they share a similar DNA, but this is all of that ramped up to 10.

Tin note of spices, rasins, and stewed fruit. Tobacco plug is marbled brown, orange-brown, yellow-brown and a little black. Plug needs cut thin with a razor and dried a little bit. Burns slow with many relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of mildly tangy fruit, spiced bread, lemon grass, very earthy, floral, dry wood, bitter nuts, mildly spicy, and a peppery retro. Virginias is leading with Kentucky and perique providing support. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

Have some from 2011, jarred since early 2019. Flavors have really melded by now. My plug has fallen apart on its own into its constituent layers, and is not the prettiest thing, but is easier to work with, and has even stayed at perfect moisture level in a little jelly jar, which are usually not as good for long-term storage as larger Ball/Mason jars. I think this one would be a good one to cellar an 8oz of, but probably the plug should have been pressed longer. Still, that doesn't affect the taste...
...and it tastes great, if you like this sort of thing. The blend is perfectly balanced, even with dark-fired Kentucky and Perique playing on the same field with the Virginias, and it delivers a hefty nicotine hit, making it a good one to DGT.

After opening the tin, a beautiful cake greets me with its aroma, making me think that this would make a beautiful trilogy with Oak Alley and Chenet’s Cake, from Cornell & Diehl. Personally, I never use a knife for the plugs, but I pinch from one corner and pull to remove the flakes, which I cut evenly. In this case, they are easily removed. Due to the type of mix and the type of cut, different flavors are experienced during the smoke, where the perique and the Kentucky, sometimes alternate their leading role and other times share it. In the first third it requires some relighting but then it stabilizes and burns perfectly. The nicotinic potency is strong and its vigor is also evident in its satiating power. A very rich mixture that could be a candidate to be included among the favorites.

I am not usually a big fan of VA/PER blends, I typically find them to be a little lacking. But Triple Play is fantastic and certainly not bland. The high parique content and Kentucky really make this shine and set is apart from the run of the mill vapers. boasting deep earthy and spicy flavors with some underlying fig/plum sweetness and woodiness. This is a very complex and complete smoke. It smokes easy and cool with a wonderful full thick smoke output. A great chilli pepper sting through the nose and on the tongue. This the sensation I most look forward to in a smoke. The only down side to this blend is the cake can be a little tricky to cut and rub out. And it needs some drying time. But it is well worth the fuss. For those like me that enjoy bold spicy smoke this is a must.

The Kentucky takes the lead which creates a unique experience you don't see in many blends. The dark-fired leaf is smoky, but less intensely so than a latakia. This smokiness is lightened up by the presence of the Virginias while also adding complexity. This is all wrapped together nicely with a generous helping of perique adding pepperiness and a subtle plum flavour. This is quickly becoming one of my favourite blends.

Very well-balanced, strong but not over-whelming. Has a nic-hit but not overwhelming. Has a very cool, balanced set of flavours ranging from bread, to expresso coffee to burnt walnuts. Probably now one of my favorite smokes. If you enjoy the hands on approach to cutting, rubbing out the flakes, drying them, this is a great blend. This is an advanced blend for advanced palates. If you're a newbie, you won't be able to appreciate all it has to offer.
