Holger Danske Sunny Delight

(2.00)
Ribbon cut Virginias are carefully blended with Black Cavendish, and for the balance of the blend a touch of Burley is added. The sweet vanilla taste is elegantly supported by a ripe orange flavor.
Notes: Previously blended in Germany by Planta. Currently blended in Denmark by Mac Baren. Previously known as "Vanilla and Orange". The name was changed to "Sunny Delight" in accordance to EU regulations.

Well now, looks like my review is the opposite of most of the others! Apologies to anyone who enjoys this blend.

Yes, this smells OK from the pack, a bit like orange flavour fondant sweets. Based on this and the relatively low proportion of Cavendish to Virginia and Burley, I was expecting to enjoy this...

First off the tobacco tastes cheap and to be honest, pretty nasty. I could detect virtually no vanilla and the only thing masking the tobacco flavour was an unpleasant artificial orange taste. It also produced a similar artificial orange sweets aroma in the pungent room note.

Positive aspects - very few relights required and it was only a little damp at the end.

Harsh and hot throughout, with frequent bite and a bad taste at the end of the bowl. Slightly less harsh and a little cooler with a large pipe but I still don't want to try it again.
Pipe Used: Large briar to small cob

Holger Danske - Vanilla & Orange.

A retyped early review.

Starting with the best feature, the unlit aroma: candy shop. Burley and Virginia account for far more than the black Cavendish.

The smoke seems anomalous to the pre-light aroma. I detected vanilla in the aroma but can't in the smoke: I only get orange. Being fair, this flavour's alright, what ruins it is the temperature: hot. However, because the burn's so raucous it means there's no dottle left come the end! Ghost? Yes: smoke this in a dedicated pipe or cob.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.

Sadly this only deserves one star:

Not recommended.
