Someone wrote "Englishy" and I endorse that with no negative connotation. A very pleasant and, for any money (but it's nice that it's so inexpensive), tasty tobacco that has just enough smokiness for the Lat fans, more than sufficient quality Virginia for the smoker in all of us and, finally, a pleasant overtone of Orientals for the eclectics. While I don't need tradenames to tell me what I'm smoking or, indeed, when to smoke it, producers seem hell-bent on doing this, with no exception here. Having said that, like EMP, Daybreak, Mid-Day, After Dinner, well, you get the point, this tobacco is not only true to its name as a nice first bowl but also a very reliable smoke throughout the day (why can't we have a 24/7 moniker for a tobacco?). A bit moist (you can always air it out a bit if you like), good quality, no-fuss-in-packing, easy lighting, nice burning, flavorful and satisfying smoke. Nuff said.

Update: four tins later and a star for each. What a welcome addition to my light English selections when I'm in the mood, and that is often. Just a great "friend" that always delivers and is far more nuanced and complex than ever imagined. If it weren't for the allure of this tobacco in the mornings, my poor terrier would split a gut waiting for his morning constitutional.

I do NOT like lat-bomb English blends that run family and friends away, but Early Day is not one of those. It is a lighter English, similar to Davidoff's Royalty and Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe, and similar in its high quality. Royalty and EMP might be a little richer, but Early Day is a solid smoke and just as good on its own terms. Smoke it all day. Serious English hounds might review it differently, but I really don't get tired of it, and I am not primarily an English smoker.

Villiger has a solid winner here, especially for the price, which in recent times has not topped $6.99 for a 50-g tin, and sometimes under $5 at P&C. Taste and refinement at that price definitely puts it in 4-star range.

A really nice blend. I was a little concerned at first thinking it might be too moist after opening the tin but was pleasantly surprised to find it smoked fine with no relights. A smooth, lightly sweet, slightly spicy, never biting, not over the top English blend that could easily be renamed All Day. I'm definitely going to replace this tin when empty, maybe cellar a few as well.

Update: Has definitely earned a spot in my permanent rotation. Great all day "yard working" "porch sittin" "millin and chillin" baccy!

Summary: a good light English that focuses mostly on Virginia sweetness

Blends built around internal balance between different types of leaf create a lack of variety that leaves one little to comment on. This Danish interpretation of English tobacco aims for balance instead of clash, and the resulting harmony produces a dark chocolate woodsy taste and thick smoke in a clean-burning, moderately strong tobacco. Its faintly spicy but mostly simply rich taste lasts to the bottom of the bowl and leaves behind a strong but not unpleasant room note. While it lacks the internal contrast of a Dunhill brand, it approximates the same mixture with its parts working together, making it taste like a single flavor instead of a blend of randomly occurring flavors. It probably fits more in basements and man-caves, or outdoors, than in the living room, but it leaves behind a classic tobacco scent that you may remember from the barber shops and hunting lodges of your childhood. I consider this one extremely underrated, in that it seems to be less popular than other brands but turns English tobacco from a scattered experience into a hard-hitting wave of flavor with enough power to help you through the day.

This is quite a tasty tobacco. I had never tried any of Villiger's offerings before this one (which I picked up on sale) and now I may have to.

There is just enough latakia (I don't need much). The virginia and the orientals play with each other throughout the smoke, neither one completely overpowering the other. It is a pleasant blend with just enough nicotine and complexity to be both satisfying and enjoyable.

Recommended.

I have tried all the villiger 1888 "day" themed blends so far and have generally liked them all for what they are. In terms of value all of them are quite a bargain for what you get.

Early Day is the only one of these blends that is a Latakia, or Balkan blend, as the latakia presence is pretty light. True to its name, this is a lighter blend that is most likely an Hommage to EMP. Like EMP this is pretty good with coffee. Unlike EMP though this has a little more edge to it. I chalk this up to two things. One, while the lat presence is light, it is still perceptible. EMP is one of the blends where you will still see people questioning whether it even contains Latakia.

The other is the orientals. They pack more a punch in ED than in EMP. In EMP, the orientals fold in and complement the Virginia nicely. Making a sweet, yet slightly sour, smoking experience, but the star in EMP IMO, is the Virginia.

In the way the orientals seem to stand out with a light latakia presence, this blend actually reminds me more of Squadron leader than it does EMP. But Squaldron Leader also seems to rely mostly on grassy sweet Virginias moreso than ED.

I put ED a rung below both EMP and SG SL, but at the same point, it is still a good Light latakia blend with a nice tin presentation at a great price point. So it is recommended.

Virginia-heavy Balkan/ English with very little Latakia. Couldn't say how close it is to Early Morning Pipe, but it is nothing at all similar to Hearth & Home's "Daybreak". (The silly designation of times of the day for tobaccos needs to be laid to rest....)

I bought a small tin of this a while back as it was very inexpensive, and I opened it just prior to New Year's Eve. Decent stuff, but no more so than a host of others. I think this is being discontinued due to lack of sales, and it is also as good as a host of others.

You almost have to look for the Latakia, but it's there. What you don't have to look for is the nicotine, which is more present than in any other English/ Balkan that I can recall. Shame that it will no longer be around, because it could really be someone's cup of tea.

I like this blend. It is not to acrid or smoky and the taste is enjoyable. it seems to stay lit and doesn't burn my tongue like some brands. I think I will add it to my regular list of smoking tobaccos. One note, however, is that the tin dried out really fast, so the next tin that I get will be put in a mason jar for keeping. I want to try the other Villiger blends now.

I started smoking a pipe the day I turned 18, and was ready to quit a month later, because all the stores close to my house carried only the cheap aromatics. (captain black, carter hall, etc.) After trying a number of these blends and being very disappointed with what seemed like a great hobby, I decided to order some tobacco off the internet and give it one last effort. Boy am I glad I did. I ordered early day and it completely changed how I felt. I loved it. I had never tried an "English" style tobacco before, and the mildness mixed with the great flavor was truly incredible. I highly recommend for any novice smoker. The older the tin got the better it seemed to smoke. I will be ordering another tin soon, and will give it a more "professional review" then, but for now, anyone who is new to pipes, or wants a mild but flavorful smoke, this blend is well worth a try.

This is a classic english style/latakia blend and I'd say it holds up well against the more famous, and expensive, competition. Nice smooth virginias with a hint of spicy latakia throughout. Classic. It is light on the latakia, not heavy.

I really liked this blend and have a tin of it that I am cellaring for years from now. Well worth a try for the english aficionado, especially considering it's price.

I think its best to say that this is a great smoke for those looking to take a walk down the light English tobacco path. It smokes great and truley does leave a fine taste in ones mouth when finished. I found its best to let this one sit for about 10-15min before loading but in turn will provide you with a fine smoke.

I was leery of a pipe tobacco from a company known for making teeny tiny dry cured cigars. No problem, it turned out: this blend is a typical balkan (made with latakia obtained from a "Balkan Region", Cyprian, I surmise). By a quick visual estimation, it appears to be about 15% latakia, 30% light virginia, 55% medium brown leaf. The tin aroma is slightly phenolic and faintly sweet with a hint of chocolate. The moisture level seems a bit too high to light up directly; I had difficulty keeping it lit after first opening.

I was put off at first by an austerely dry, harsh flavor, so I ignored the tin for a week. Like a tannic red wine, it benefited from breathing and improved greatly. It never develops any real sweetness normally associated with virginia and oriental tobaccos, and certainly not any sweet tastes from any casing typically found in continental European blends. The chocolate noted in the tin cannot be found in the taste.

It seems to like a medium-sized bowl. I suspect a large bowled pipe would be better, but the nicotine delivery would be too high for my wussy tolerance. The nicotine seems stronger than the mild taste would suggest, and higher than an oriental-rich mixture would normally possess.

I can't speak to any comparison to Dunhill's EMP; my last tin of that blend was a half decade ago and that differed greatly from the EMP I remembered from the 1970's. The orientals in this blend are not particularly fragrant, the room note is neutral, almost cigarette-like.

The bowl never quite develops into anything interesting nor changes much. Vigorous puffing merely spins my head but does not bite my tongue.

Balkan lovers may be disappointed by the subdued latakia character of the blend. I'm disappointed by the plain tobacco taste and smell. It's not my tin of weed right now but I suspect age will improve it greatly, so I give it 2 stars for the time being. You may find it exactly what you are looking for.

I really have began to enjoy the subtleties and nuances of this blend. When I first smoked it, it honestly reminded me of a camel cigarette(strong presence of oriental leaves probably being the culprit). Loaded it into my meerschaum and grabbed a cup of earl grey tea and yes! This is not rolling tobacco! Very nice buttery, sweet and sour teryaki sauce flavours from the oriental components with latakia peeking out here and there. The virginias provide just enough body and toasty sweetness to balance this blend. A little mono-chromatic but completelely enjoyable while reading or what have you. This is too me what Blakan Sasieni was trying to achieve and fell slightly short. That's just my two cents. Interested in trying the other two blends of this collection.

This is a lovely Danish style English with a very light casing. Great taste and cool burning. The latakia is applied gently and the orientals and virginias take the fore. This is an excellent mix of quality tobaccos and very smooth on the tongue. I really appreciate the way this one satisfies without being in your face. A semi-aromatic with all the positives. Well worth a try.

I have not smoked EMP - but have smoked AMP by McClelland and C&D "Good Morning". Needless to say these are all attempts at recreating EMP. I like this blend a lot. I had settled on Good Morning as my morning blend, but will now alternate with this blend.

It has a great scent when opening the tin, slight "woodsy" scent. It was a little dryer from the tin than I like, but I like my tobacco slightly moist. This blend packs and lights easily. I generally do not have to re-light until near the bottom of the bowl.

The room note is great, very pleasant. This tobacco buns smoothly and the taste is consistant through the bowl. Medium thick smoke is produced.

This is a very nice light to medium morning smoke which could be smoked all day.

This is supposed to be similar to a certain famous blend for smoking in the early morning. Now I once smoked some EMP on vacation during a wonderful vacation time on Cape Cod - good friends, great weather, wonderful memories. So, as you know, sometimes the memories are a part of the pipe smoke experience.

That being said, this blend is very close to what I remember! If I had to make a comparison from memory, I'd say the original was just a little bit brighter. But again, that could be due to a different pipe, bowl size, shape, or whatever.

On its own merit this is a great mild oriental/VA blend and if you miss the original, give this one a try while you're waiting for the return!

I have to say I was nicely surprised by this mellow English blend. I am a fan of Villiger's dried cigars and so decided to take a flier on this. Money well spent...and not a lot of money either. On opening the tin I got a slight aroma of chocolate and a hint of plums, moisture content was a bit high so let it dry a bit. Smoking was a pleasure.....although it was still a tad moist and needed a bit attention. It started off with a nice mild taste and changed slightly thru the course of the bowl......however without even a hint of bite (and I did the Orient Express choo-choo for a bit just to see if it would bite...it didn't. Burned very even;y leaving just powdery white ash and very little dottle. It's not the most incredible English blend I've had, but it certainly was well worth the money and like another reviewer I am putting away a couple of tins for aging. A quality product, just like their dry cigars (which I cannot play golf without...).

I was very divided on rather to give this four stars or three. It is very very close in comparison to one of my favorite tobaccos: McClelland's Rose of Latakia. I am in love with the delicate balance offered by a gentle dose of latakia following a sweet Virginia/oriental base. It is so succulant and very forgiving with no tongue bite. The mild latakia gets slightly more pronounced mid bowl, which is a welcome transition. It burns to a dry ash and ends too quickly, leaving me wanting another bowl.

I have all of the Villager blends/ tins, and they are all good tobaccos. I have yet to be disappointed, and Early Day is no exception.

It is a solid English/ Balkan tobacco. I really like the flavor and punch of the Virginias in this one. A little spicy on the tongue, but no bite.

Smokes to a very fine ash and burns completely with no relights. I'll likely be buying this as long as the local B&M continues to carry it.

Update... I did get word from the hater in chief that it bothers her nose and throat when I smoke it indoors. Definitely still recommended.
