Cornell & Diehl Red Stag

(2.37)
Red and Golden Virginias provide a pleasant base for this medium-strength English. Latakia and Turkish Orientals offer their own addition to the blend giving it a pungent smoky and earthy flavors and hints of pepper. An excellent all round medium English, Red Stag is a nicely balanced and very well rounded blend.
Notes: Reminiscent of old original Rattray's Red Rapparee.

This is a very Oriental-forward blend. Moisture was perfect straight out of the tin. The tin note is primarily sour Orientals, with Latakia a strong background note. I suspect those who have objected to the tin note might be objecting to the Oriental components. This blend is driven by these Orientals, however. From tin note to taste to room note, Red Stag is always Oriental first. In fact it is, in my opinion, an unbalanced blend in favour of the Orientals. Those who have not preferred Red Stag are perhaps objecting to this. That is a fair assessment. I do prefer Red Stag. I find it interesting and exotic and constantly evolving. As I smoke through a bowl, I find the different Orientals coming forward and then receding, one after the other, with the Latakia in the background always there, all based on a firm bed of Virginias. Red Stag has shot to the top of my list, sharing space with KBV’s Goblin Mixture and Plateau of Leng.

It IS reminiscent of the old Rattray blend. Red Virginia, toasted cavendish, latakia and/or oriental. Similar components to the originals and the cut is the same as well, if my memory serves me right. A little sweet, good medium body mouth feel, with a light oriental fragrance and light smokiness. And, it smokes softly and without heat. I compared the tin aroma to a recent Rattray's blend and the most obvious thing was that Red Stag was natural like the original blends were. That is, there was no aromatic casing which was obvious in the EU made Rattrays.

This is from an 8 ounce tin of 13 months age. I also smoked a fresh 2 ounce tin, and the results were the same. Excellent.

The reviews so far have been mostly unflattering, I suspect they may be out of date. I tried this a few years ago and do not remember much about it. The can I am currently smoking is dated 7-30-07. The color is reds and browns with bits of black. It is mostly a thinner ribbon cut with some broken pieces of flake. It is dry, as with most C&D blends, but about the dryness I prefer for smoking. It takes a little to get it going but once the tobacco is toasted it burns well. It requires slow methodical puffing, to keep from heating up and nipping. When smoked slowly it exhibits a nice moderate sweetness complimented by toasty notes. The oriental lends a nice faint acridity they goes well with the toasty sweetness. The moderate quantity of latakia marries well with the other flavors. The aroma is of toasted virginia with a wafting of latakia/orientals. I find it an excellent blend. Like the best Americans it is relatively straight-forward with enough depth and sublety to be interesting.

Well I guess my review is going pretty much against everything written here. A solid blend. Just finishing a tin that I must say has 20 months on it. Maybe some components have changed?

Oriental forward from the char. What I like about this blend is that it has quite a bit of body to it. I like McConnell’s Oriental but this has a quite a bit more body. If you are a burley person you may like this more. Bit of sweetness in the after taste. Retrohale is beautiful. A bowl lasts a long time with a rich creamy smoke. Zero bite and I puff hard normally. Just a really enjoyable tin. Probably would not smoke it daily because I am not heavy into Oreintals but I would be worse off.

Surprised it is not higher in regard.
