Cornell & Diehl Virginia Gentleman

(3.25)
A unique combination of Virginias and burleys, with a slight touch of Turkish for added sophistication, create a superb all day smoke for those who enjoy Virginia blends, but find them a touch bitey for all day enjoyment.

A great anytime/all-day blend for Virginia lovers. If you’re looking for an affordable tobacco that fits that category, look no further.

Opening the jar, you get a subtle sweetness with hay, citrus, bread, and woody notes. It’s simple, yet pleasing. Moisture content was perfect when I put it in the jar, and it’s still perfect. Upon light, I first get hit with the citrusy, grassy Virginias along with some slight fruit. Those notes are pretty much constant throughout the smoke. The burley pops up occasionally, providing woodiness and some body. It also tones down the acidity of the Virginias. It’s low enough in the mix that if you don’t like burley, you probably won’t notice it. The orientals are probably my favorite part in this blend. They don’t show up constantly, but when they do, they add a nice creamy, buttery feel to the smoke. It really enhances the sweetness of the Virginias. They also add a bit of a floral aftertaste and just a little spice. It burns completely to ash every time I smoke it.

This is a great, simple, Virginia-forward VABur. It’s not going to wow anybody (unless you’re someone like me who was looking for something simple and Virginia-forward in the first place), but it tastes great, is extremely satisfying, and can be bought in bulk for an affordable price. I think the description that C&D provides is pretty on point. If you like Virginias but don’t like the bite they often give, especially if you like smoking multiple bowls, this could very well be the blend for you.

Interesting how the reviews are all over the place for Virginia Gentleman. Just goes to show how different our tastes are.

For myself, I didn't like this. To me the blend came across as virtually tasteless. What I did get was the hay/dried grass of the Virginia, which I suspect is C&D's Virginia Flake in ribbon form. And in a blend with burley and Orientals, I'd like more than a one-string banjo.

In my Falcon meerschaums, the blend smoked okay. In my Charatan Mayfair, it was hotter than blazes.

This blend will possibly work for someone who wants a mixture that has no casing or topping and has very subtle tobacco flavors. But in all honesty I just can't recommend this.
