Borkum Riff Classic Pure Tobacco

(1.33)
Borkum Riff Classic Pure Tobacco is a premium quality mix of Virginia and Oriental tobacco in a light casing. A captivating mix of dark and bright tobaccos with an authentic tobacco flavor and agreeable aromas of plum, nuts, chocolate and coffee. Improved smoking characteristics give the tobacco a more even, slightly slower burn, making it easier to light and smoke. The perfect choice for pipe smokers who seek a rich, full bodied tobacco taste.

I found BR Classic in a convenience store. As my choice of tobaccos is limited I gave it a try.

This is very moist shag cut tobacco (to the point you could hand-roll smoke it). The aroma, indeed, is very natural: almost cigarette like, with a whiff or Orientals. Mind you, this is no Campanille (old version).

For a moment I though I was smelling Camel cigarettes. Not at all bad, but by no means you'll get a whiff of anything remotely close to “plum, nuts, chocolate and coffee”. On the contrary, this is straight tobacco aroma, very similar, say, to Golden Virginia hand rolling tobacco.

It's a medium strength smoke, verging on the hot side of combustion. Its palatable in the sense a cigarette is: neutral, smoky and slightly salty, on account of the Orientals. There's none of the natural Virginia sweetness you taste in a flake or matured cake. If pressed too hard, you'll get some tongue bite. The aroma, again, is of pure cigarette. For a Borkum Riff this one is truly an achievement, but there's nothing exiting here: just plain, natural tobacco. I would “somewhat” recommend this as an intriguing change of pace for the established smoker, and recommend it (hence the three stars) to the cigarette smoker wishing to kick the habit in order to venture into pipe smoking.
