Got my free sample in the mail. I was impressed with the size of the tin. A nice amount for a sample, actually a full sized tin.

I opened the tin and was met with a pleasant aroma. The latakia was the dominate aroma, but the virgina and burley could be detected as well. Not bad at all.

I chose a medium bowl pipe to try this out in. A trusty Savenelli pipe of mine. I loaded it to the top and fired it up.

First impression was that this is very much NOT 965. Not even close. I don't understand how anyone could make a comparison with the Dunhill 965. However, it isn't bad. I feel bad giving this tobacco only 2 stars, it really deserves to be rated a little better, but I can't give it 3 stars. That would be giving more than deserved.

The Good: This tobacco burns even, doesn't bite, tastes pretty decent, and isn't too expensive.

The Bad: Well, there really isn't too much bad outside of the taste just not being nearly as good as so many others available. To be honest, this is a decent smoke. It just isn't ringing my bell. There are simply too many other blends that I will reach for before I'll consider this one. I've already used it to introduce a few new "pipe-curious" smokers to english style blends and have done so with positive responses.

If you see this in your local tobacco shop and you are needing a good smoke while waiting for your "order" to arrive, then I recommend it fully. It will do the job.

For the record. 2 1/2 stars.

I would hardly call this "perfect for fans of Dunhill My Mixture #965". And I hate to disagree with the esteemed Pipestud but if this is a revved up anything, it's a revved up Tinderbox Sherlocks Choice. 🙂 Then again, we're all different in this crazy pipesmoking world.

This is a rather ordinary but decent light English blend. It's very sweet tasting a la SC I mentioned above and the burley further dilutes the strength while adding good body and some nicotine to the mix. There's really not a thing wrong with this blend and anyone that enjoys lighter fare, and no fancy orientals except latakia, should try it. Latakia actually has a sweet and smoky flavor and the virginias aren't overcooked so they retain their sweetness. It's a fine blend; just not anything to get too excited over. Quite honestly, it's the best Altadis blend I've ever smoked, so perhaps that IS something to crow about.

This is an aromatic English crossover blend, with emphasis on the aromatic. Though I smell significant latakia in the tin aroma, it is only barely perceptible while smoking. I found it a bit too sweet for my taste due to the heavy presence of tan cavendish. It does not have a specific flavor such as vanilla, it is just a perfumed sort of sweetness. The main flavor is of the sweet cavendish with the latakia providing additional fullness with very little of it's smoky flavor. The most likable aspect of this blend is the thick billows of pleasant smelling smoke it provides. If you like blowing smoke rings, this is for you. It is also extremely smooth. Being a Sutliffe blend, I kept waiting for it to turn nasty after the first half of the bowl, but that never occurred. The base tobaccos are of good quality and it tastes pretty much the same from the top to the bottom of the bowl. This is an aromatic, though, and it will gunk up your pipe a bit. If you have a sweet tooth or like aromatics and or crossover blends, you might give this a try. The reference to 965 is ridiculous; this is to Dunhill 965 as Spam is to steak.

This is a nice middle English, but unfortunately it has the chemical taste of many aromatics. This is cased with vanilla or maple and was quite appealing at first. This burned really well and the smoke was creamy. The Burley and Virginias were very nice and there was a wonderful nutty aroma. Still I could not get past the chemical taste/aftertaste. Probably will be the last time I try and AroEnglish blend...have been disappointed too many times. If you happen to like these types of hybrid blends, definitely try this.

Smoke in peace.

This was a weird one to me in the respect that I would rate the first half as a two star blend and the second half as a four star blend. This is just how the blend effected my tastebuds, and as always, YMMV.

It happened this way with every bowl that I had from my tin. The first half was rough and edgy with latakia dominating the show silencing all other ingredients and then, at about the halfway mark, a nutty sweetness developed and it just sort of smoothed the smoke out and made for a highly enjoyable finish.

In terms of rating this blend on the whole is not an easy task, it seems that if you start and 2 and end at four stars then this should rate at 3, but that confounds logic as to what the ratings mean. I would not recommend this blend due to this inconsistency in taste. I did not like the flavor of the first half and there are many other blends that offer a full bowl's worth of the sumptuous flavor I tasted at the end. In terms with the latter thought, I would rather smoke some of Peter Stokkebye's English Luxury than BN5 and that is a very inexpensive bulk blend.

Although I would not recommend this blend the flavor in the second half does earn this one more than one star. Overall, this is not a bad blend, and someone who enjoys shifting flavors may really like this one. It is just not my cup of tea.

I do not see, or taste, the comparison to 965. This is a different animal than Dunhill's 965. This is a nice English/Balkan with some spice. It's not overwhelming in the latakia department. (I am a major latakia-phile, so that's a minus, but it may be a plus for some.)

It's a nice smoke, but did not make a huge impression on me. Probably better for those who are newer to Englishes.

Ok, so, latakia is not one of my favorite condiment tobacco. I've tried a couple of English blends in the past and found them to smell and taste of road tar from the latakia. I tried the Holiday Mixture Match from the same blender and found it to be a very good blend with its hint of latakia--maybe I was missing out on a style of tobacco that so many others seem to love.

My problem with Blend No. 5 isn't the latakia (I've sorta steeled myself to whatever the content level is here) but with the blend itself. Something seems to be missing. The blend isn't necessarily flat. The upper levels of taste are there--it's the bottom that is lacking, like it needs more burley or something to fill it out.

Maybe my palate isn't sophisticated enough to appreciate this blend adequately. The nicotine level is appropriate. There are ocassions I actually want to smoke No. 5. I never come away feeling satisfied though.

Rating this is tough for me. The constituents seem to be quality stuff. The blend has not converted me into a fan of latakia. I'll rate it Somewhat Recommended but it's probably better than that.

I too got the free sample (no longer available.) This is another one of those latakia blends that is richer in flavor than in tobacco strength. The flavor is unique. It is musky and leathery, like men's cologne. I believe there is some vanilla topping in the mix. Overall it is satisfying for latakia lovers, but not very satisfying in the strength department.

This stuff has little of the charm or character of My Mixture 965, so if that is what you're looking for I'd steer clear. The only flavor I seem to get out of this is a dull hint of latakia, which as someone pointed out earlier, has a kind of waxy flavor to it. The stuff smokes well enough and fairly cooly. However, this tobacco is just way too lacking in the area of taste for me to give it much of a recommendation.
