Cornell & Diehl Burley Flake #3
(3.42)
Burley Flake #3 is a blend of cool burning burley and rich, dark fired Kentucky which team up with a bit of fine Virginia for the natural sweetness and welcome fragrance. Lastly, C&D added a dash of perique for additional nuance.

Don't ask a boy to smoke a man's tobacco! Burley Flake no 3 is a man's tobacco and for the experienced smoker who enjoys a fair dose of nicotine. The tin aroma is very smoky, suggesting a fair amount of Dark-Fired Kentucky. The flakes rub out fairly easily and it smokes very nicely and evenly. The main taste is of tobacco, completed by the DFK and of unsweetened raisin that comes and goes throughout. An interesting change of pace, I am not sure if I will rebuy but I certainly appreciated the experience.

This is my favorite from the Burley Flake series, not so overwhelming in nicotine conent as #1 and #2 and a bit sweeter, probably due to higher Virginia proportion.
I won't be buying it again since I prefer any of the MacBaren's burleys, but this is quality tobacco.

My tin presented broken strips ~ 2" long that were easy to pack. However, in my view, the moisture content from the tin was too high and drying made for more consistent packing and allowed easier initial lights and prevented numerous relights. Smoked cool and smooth without any bite or condensation but I didn't sense much contribution from the Perique. I still prefer the taste of my straight VAs or Va/Pers but if you favor Burleys, this is a good one.

If you wonder how quality burley ages, I opened this tin at 13 years of age. It had mellowed some but still smoked well and did not taste very different from a new tin. The flakes were still mostly intact and moist. The smell from the tin was earthy and I must admit very strong.
The flake was easy to rub out, pack and light and for the most part stayed lit. The tobacco produced copious amounts of smoke. It had the usual nutty burley flavor, the Kentucky added some strength and depth. The perique was still apparent, but I did not notice anything from the Virginia. The nicotine hit was very noticable but there was no tongue bite.
If burley is your thing, this is a good one but if you don't like strong tobacco this won't be in your wheelhouse. Not an all day smoke for me anyways. I did use a pipe with a 6 mm filter and feel that is the best way to go with this tobacco.

Whereas #2 was slightly bland and assaulting on my tastebuds... #3 kind of tickles that old Joe krantzy vibe.. a little sweetness prevails.. must have a little more virginia..although it is burley driven.. the perique balances very well.. the Kentucky is there but more as a lingering woody smokey afterthought.. really pleasant on the retrohale... it still has some dry and rough qualities.. but overall it works. There is a little strength.. but not overwhelming. Pleasant but rough

A nice, full, powerful dark burley, with the VA adding a bit of sweetness and the Perique adding a bit of fig which together take the edge off the burley and round out the flavor. Like most C&D flakes, they come apart in strands for easy packing, but unlike many these burn on the slow side.
