Cornell & Diehl Chopped Cigar Leaf
(3.00)
C&D's Chopped Cigar Leaf is an extremely well regarded PA. wrapper leaf, similar to that used in a certain high-grade cigar series. And a component found in their most popular cigar leaf blends.
Notes: Blending Tobacco.

C&D Chopped Cigar Leaf - Pennsylvania Broadleaf cigar wrapper tobacco chopped into a ribbon cut. PA Broadleaf is a powerful, earthy, semi-sweet tobacco. It offers coffee, brown sugar, and barnyard (in a good way) notes. It smokes dry and cool. I have only smoked it in cobs in fear that it would ghost a briar. This tobacco should blend well with other tobaccos maybe Latakia, Burley, Virginias. Smoked straight however it is enjoyable on its own. It's essentially smoking a cigar in your pipe.

It has been a couple of years since I've posted any C&D blend reviews and I have smoked nearly 100 tins of their various offerings in that time. So, it may be awhile before I get to all of them.
Okay, now who wouldn't want to try this blending compilation straight? I split a bag with a friend and when he sent me my share I loaded up. Yuck! Okay, so all was not lost, right? I added about 30% of this Burley/cigar leaf to 70% Dunhill Royal Yacht (Murray's era and one of my favorites). Yuck again! So, anybody want some really dry Chopped Cigar Leaf?

Cornell & Diehl - Chopped Cigar Leaf.
For my smoking day, the evening normally constitutes a good cigar. But, over the past few days I've wanted my pipe instead. So, a bowl of Chopped Cigar Leaf seemed like a good concession!
Coarse Cut? Hell-yeah! It is, indeed, extremely coarse! But, it includes twigs, too. As I'd expect, the blend's a medium brown, but, forlornly, could use more moisture. The slight dryness means igniting a bowl is done without a hitch.
The flavour? Like a cigar, in a pipe! It's a little dry, slightly absinthian, and a touch woody. The main issue, when smoking it straight, comes from the lack of moisture; it burns hot and fast. Thank goodness for the coarse cut, without this it'd burn even hotter! I don't find it bites my tongue, though.
Nicotine: a bit above medium. Room-note: like a VERY pungent cigar!
Chopped Cigar Leaf? I'd recommend it for blending, but not for smoking unadulterated. Two stars:
Somewhat recommended.

If you enjoy premium cigars, this is the pipe tobacco to smoke unmixed. I have mixed this blend with Dark Burley, about 50/50, and it smokes nicely as well. Cigar leaf & Dark Burley are dry tobaccos that don't leave moisture at the bottom of the bowl.

Jar note of very earthy, musty, and mildly pungent. Tobacco is a brown ribbon cut, moisture is good, though some may want to dry it out a bit. It appears the tobacco was pressed and sliced then rubbed out, many chunks can be rubbed down further. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and consistent, with notes of very woody, very earthy, very spicy, mildly bitter nuts, very dry slight bitterness, mild cocoa, cigar, a mildly sour fermented vegetation background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is strong, and aftertaste is good.
