Hearth & Home Classic Burley Kake

(3.11)
Classic Burley Kake is a new blend that pays homage to old time burley flakes and cakes. Using Tennessee and Kentucky burleys, ranging from lighter white to darker mahogany, and a bit of matured red Virginia, this sliced cake tobacco is a traditional American style blend. We start with four different types of burley, the aforementioned Tennessee and Kentucky, plus two different premium white burleys. Then we add a red Virginia for a maple-like sweetness. Then we use all natural flavors: cocoa, rum and anise and steam the tobaccos with the flavorings and firmly press and slice it. The aroma is mellow and pleasant, and the taste is lightly sweet with a large volume of smoke. Hearken back to a simpler time when the sight of a pipe in someone's mouth while walking down the street was common, and the scent of pipe tobacco was everywhere.

I received a compact 2oz. cake from a bulk order; a really delightful, easy going old school burley blend with a surprising depth of flavor. Upon light up I enjoyed a pleasant oatmeal like flavor; I think another reviewer described it as cereal; the nuttiness of the burley soon emerges in perfect balance with a subdued sweetness that carries on throughout the smoke. Rubs out, packs and burns well and offers a very smooth and delightful everyday smoke. I will surely order more; again, in bulk. Another winner from Russ.

Interesting blend. I don't get much of the aromatic flavors. I get the burley and really get some Virginias towards the end. Slightly sweet and nutty. A decent tobacco if you want just dab of burley. You need to puff easy on this one as there is a slight tongue bite if you go crazy.

This is one of my favorite burley blends ! This is old school to the tee ! The toppings complimentary blend perfectly. Rum, cocoa, anise, old time flavor. But it's not overdone, actually is on the money balanced. The room note and aroma are very nice, pleasant and sweet without being disgusting and cloying. I love this blend ! I wish Russ kept more I b stock as it is back ordered a lot !

This could have been exactly the type of blend which I enjoy; it packs and burns well without any fuss, doesn't bite, and starts out very pleasantly. Unfortunately it contains the same poor kentucky leaf found in several other mixtures from this blender which tastes like the shank of the pipe is burning. This makes the bottom third of the bowl a loathsome experience. I give this a 2-star rating as there are some smokers who seem to like this sort of flavor.

Not much to add to all of the Positive Reviews out there. This was a gret smoke, given to me by another smoker. It will be ordered in my next order, and in good quantity-I can see this easily as my daily smoke.

This blend was made so the taste would match the tin aroma and they have succeeded. It is made from high quality tobacco and it is not what I would classify as a heavy aromatic. The cocoa note is evident but not overpowering. It has an inherent softness to it. It reminds me of eating freshly cracked walnuts. Lightly sweet and mild to medium in strength. The kake breaks up very nicely to an almost sawdust consistency and packs easily. Once lit it burns clean down to the heel with no residue. No bite whatsoever. It harkens back to the older burley blends and the room note is pleasant. Nicotine hit is medium, not a head spinner. No problem as an all day smoke

When I finished my pouch of PA I thought, hmmm that's pretty darn good stuff, I just may be a burley man after all. With CBK I found that I am indeed. CBKake is fairly dry and crumbly, it rubs out very easily into very fine pieces, or you can jam in the chunks of Kake and you'll do just fine. Tin note is nut/cocoa backed by alcohol and a hint of (stewed)? fruit, maybe cherries. handles like a dream and burns to the bottom no problem. It's a fairly homogeneous smoke all the way down and has decent amount of N. It won't be a tobacco that you turn to for solving life's mysteries but you will notice a calmer and more mellow self after a bowl. I'm going to give it 4 stars but I'm not quite ready to call it a favorite.

When I first opened the tin I was taken aback by the intensity of the casing. I really did not like the aroma at all. To be honest it turned my stomach.

I was likewise surprised by the appearance of the tobacco itself. Mid brown strips of compressed fine cut tobacco. It has the texture of coarse particle board.

After this not very auspicious start, things, thankfully, started to improve. The tobacco rubs out to a very fine, quite dry, powder. It is easy to load and light. Once burning, the tobacco improves (imo) markedly. The tobacco flavours integrate with the casing to produce a woodsy, herbal aroma. Still a strong aromatic, but not the bakery or confectionery assault of the tin note.

This tobacco has a lovely creamy mouthfeel. It is gentle on the tongue and easy to handle in the bowl, burning cool and steady. There is a fair amount of interest in the tobacco itself, I especially like the dark Kentucky that opens up a nice smoky quality as the bowl progresses. There is a consistent and pleasant sweetness on the tongue. If you can get past the casing, and clearly many find it attractive, you might make a friend of this baccy. Unfortunately I found the tin note too much. Not a deal breaker, but I can't recommend it without reservations.

Tin note smells strongly of clay, even play doh. Pretty unique.

Burned perfectly with only an hour or so of dry time. The smoke is rich, as advertised. First few puffs were a bit harsh but opened up nicely in short order. Leather and cedar/pine with a sweet top note. Periodic sour notes; one of them had a nice stone fruit taste to it, the others felt like it was bordering on burley's sour tendencies, but it didn't go too far in that direction. Occasional notes of toast, and toward the end, a strawberry jam/burnt toast flavor that was very nice. Solid slug of nicotine, as expected, given the components.

Room note varied between smoked cigarette (not good) and a nice, old-fashioned pipe tobacco aroma. Despite the complexity of the blend (within its somewhat narrow focus), I found it a little two dimensional. I find C&D's Gentleman Caller to be more enjoyable. But I think Russ O. got what he was looking for with this one; it does have a very old time aroma and flavor. If you're a burley and a nicotine fan, you'll probably enjoy this. I won't buy more of it, but I'll smoke what I've got!

I have not noticed any hints of cocoa or anise. This is really a basic burley blend. It is nutty and warm with a nice room note and some sweetness on the tongue. Overall I find this blend a bit dull.
