Entering for perceivably ordinary consideration, is one Peter Stokkebye PS301 Natural Dutch Cavendish. Fashioned in the fine tradition for the extended process of steaming, pressing, and then generously applied casings, PS301 renders an exceptionally mild tempered and unfussy appeal. Incorporating a selection of choice Virginia, a modest portion of mixed Burley, and finally a representative Virginia based Cavendish, the tobacco feels of an aromatic sort, an inherent feature that uniquely surfaces, consistently embodied within its natively sweet character. Overall, what eventually transpired was a first-place exercise in grand simplicity.

Sold as a bulk varietal, PS301 displays the cultured integration of finely prepared ribbon strands engendering a darker colored assortment of varying pigments of brown ranging from lighter pieces to those heavily influenced and marbleized by the associated processing-based variables. Optimally moist, the softer texture tobacco projects a resident nose the brings the wholesome fragrance of lush bright Virginian grass, alluring spicey earthen wood, and a pleasantly captured sweet, modestly soured Burley all lightly graced a by non-descript yet politely consoling sugariness.

With the initial drawl upon the pipe, for all appearances PS301 immediately encounters as a simple experience centered on a seasoned Virginian depiction. What ensues, however, is a savory base note of deep seeded hay interweaved with a lulling Red floral accent, further decorated by toasty wooded splendor. Further colorization of the confluent Virginia elements is staged by the placement of some fervent yet easeful native spice and a tamed tracing of milder tart/fruity citrus grass. Interestingly there is a subtle interpretive quality that arises, contextualizing in a wine-like sense favoring the sweet white variety. Clearly a milder disposition respective to unadulterated magnitude yet impactful in the characterization of individual flavor attributes, nevertheless.

A bit of gentle rooted sourness, light walnut and spicy earthiness from the comprising Burleys provide the complementing background ambience. This melding of subject strains does inject a stream of gentle molasses as an extended flavorsome treaty. And as related, there is an abiding sweetness present which I feel is the remarking influence of the particular heavier casings that are used. Mainly one can register a recognizable dulled corny sugar sampling mixed with a clear projection of tactfully arranged lighter honey. PS301 also is accompanied with some well cured smokiness, which imparts further depth to its recording.

For a light natured Cavendish focused tobacco, PS301 has a good humored and inspiring room presence. Principally the admixture throws a medium strengthened fragrance that is superbly agreeable in its assumed conduct. A gentle and pleasantly sweet perfume attends foremost as this succulence embraces an enriched bottom support of warm, toasty hay, denser seasoned wood, and narrowed sugar nuttiness. Still, I was quite surprised and therefore grabbed by the tenacity in which this loving essence demonstrated lingering residency.

Mechanically this blend proved to be quite accommodating as to being a pleasurable simple undertaking. Performing consistently in all related physical properties, the tobacco showed little evidence of Virginian susceptibility to unfavorable heat generation or obstinate palate thrashing. Although if indulged too aggressively one can and might experience a tinge of zingy sensitivity upon the tongue. Producing handsome plumes of bighearted gray smoke, the textural superiority of this production is patently smooth and well-manicured in its standing quality. With modest nicotine residuals, PS301 could very well be a constant friend to a day-long smoker.

Ultimately, to label this categorically mild tobacco, PS301, as unsophisticated in lieu of the exuberance posed by the latest marketed bird blend or derivation of some mountain-made wonder would be sadly inaccurate. Is it humbled and unassuming in its stylized form of smoking grandeur? Yes, indeed so, but that does not detract from its ending worth and conceivable merits, at least in my mind.

With little doubt, I could unreservedly recommend this Stokkebye entry for any aromatic-averse piper as a reasonable trial experiment or quite possibly those tenderfoots who are interested in a meaningful introduction to the passion for piping in general. Give it a try should you be remotely curious. Afterall, this old slant on Cavendish-based blends still remains wholly popular for their sensible and simply mellowing ingenuousness. In the end, Peter Stokkebye PS301 Natural Dutch Cavendish bears that simple truth quite effectively. 3.0 Pipes.

This is a basic Dutch cavendish. I never smoked much Amphora Brown back when it was in every grocery store, but this is similar to what I remember. One of the other reviews said it was like Sail Regular, and that is true in terms of strength and cut. I find Sail Regular to have a slightly sweet taste with just a little oriental spice.

This is a good smoke, but it is nothing fancy. I got tobacco flavor, natural subdued sweetness and a cool burn. It is a combination that works. This is an "all-day" blend, and by that I mean I have smoked five bowls of it in a row and did not get bored with it or suffer palate fatigue.

Edit 8/31/14: I bought a pound of this when the sample was gone. I find that I go through this at a brisk rate. I reach for it a lot. It is simple and satisfying. This is a solid 3.5 on the scale. It is not something everyone should try, but it works very well for me.

The flue cured Virginia is a bit grassy with some tart citrus, light floralness, and a bit of spice as the lead component. The nutty, earthy, woody burley is also a little toasty with a touch of molasses in a supporting role. The Virginia cavendish offers tart citrus and honey, and noticeably melds well with the other varietals. The spice is a little tongue tingly, so I recommend a slow to moderate puffing cadence, or you may feel a little bite and a harsh note. Has a few small rough edges. The topping (honey?) is hard to define, but is a little sweet, and doesn't detract from the tobaccos. The strength and nic-hit are just past the center of mild to medium. The taste level is a step past that mark. Burns slightly fast, requires very few relights, and has a very consistent flavor as it easily burns to ash. Leaves almost no moisture in the bowl. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste and room note. Not very complex, but serves well as an all day smoke.

...Quite a nice tobacco...simple, straightforward. yet it pleases all my senses. While it is a dramatic shift from the strong plug/flake tobaccos I smoke, it has made it into my top 15 tobaccos in rotation. This is one of those few tobaccos that fits under, "Less is more"... Extremely pleasant taste and aroma, and can be enjoyed in any size pipe...especially good with hot tea/coffee and in the evening with a wee dram of single malt. Certainly worth a try...

...a pipe is to be savored...

It always cracks me up when people say a certain blend of pipe tobacco tastes like cigarettes. I also smoke cigarettes and wish they could taste like this blend. Honestly, if you think this tastes like cigarettes then they either sold you a bag of "faux" pipe tobacco or you've never had a cigarette. I don't say this to be harsh, I say it to make it clear that it is IMPOSSIBLE to mistake this for cigarette tobacco.

The jar smell reveals some kind of topping, maybe vanilla. This blend, however, isn't heavily cased and you can taste the tobacco. I would qualify this as a lightly aromatic cavendish blend. The taste and aroma develop into a creamy coconut type flavor, and the last third is more reminiscent of a plain burley blend, but slightly sweeter.

A simple whiff at the jar will convince you it won't taste anywhere close to a cigarette.

The third is a series of reviews on Peter Stokkebye's more naturally flavored tobaccos, the other two being Cube Cut and Aromatic Dutch Slices. No appreciable aroma other than that of fine tobacco, and like the other two previously reviewed tobaccos, NDC was easy to load and light. The overall smoking characteristics were outstanding and similar to those already mentioned. This one, for me, was more Virginia forward (but not hay like) and had more of a spiciness/sharpness while exhaling through the nose. A very naturally tasting smoke and very appealing. A bit more tingling on the tongue than the other two but no bite to speak of. Smoked dry to the heel, without moisture or dottle, and maintained a very nice, pure tobacco taste throughout the smoke. Solid smoking experience and for me but would have preferred a more, fuller tasting Burley in the mix. A good set it and forget it type of smoke and along with the other three, very affordable.

Rather suprising that a bulk dutch style cavendish of this sort has some appreciable nicotine. It's a bit closer to medium than mild in this regard. Dutch style cav's are generally very light. In fact, it seems to me despite the description that there must be at least some lighter dark fired leaf in this blend, slight smokiness in there. In line with dutch style it is very light in flavor with a very mild chocolate-like casing. The cut is a ready rubbed caked tobacco along the lines of the old Amphora, perhaps a bit chunkier. Moisture level was just about perfect with no noticable humicants, no bite. This should be a good mixer.

As a smoker who enjoys sail regular, and skandinavik regular, I find peter stokebye natural dutch cavendish to be very similar to sail regular, and a lot less expensive. It also reminds me of the old amphora regular, as well as I can remember it. It is a good flavorful all day kind of smoke, without all the goop and additives of some of the other brands like lane, and mcClelland's.Granger rough cut, sail regular, stokkebye luxury navy flake, and mcBaren virginia no.1, are the favorites in my rotation, although i've found myself smoking p.s.natural dutch cavendish 90% of the time. If you like sail regular,or the old amphora regular, this is the blend for you. I buy mine from for $12.50 per 8 oz. Natural dutch cavendish may become the only tobacco I buy in bulk in the future, except for an ocassional can of granger rough cut,as I enjoy a good burley with my morning coffee. I give p.s.natural dutch cavendish four stars.I've also found this blend to be bite-free.

Stokkebye’s Natural Dutch Cavendish doesn’t offer much in the way of scent in the pouch other than a light sweetness. It’s fairly dry to the touch verses a black Cavendish. In the pipe it is very straight forward offering no complexity but then who expects that from a Cavendish blend? It is mild, and sweet, but not overly sweet, rather just enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. I think that JimInks description of citrus and honey comes closest to what I taste. There is no bitterness that I can detect and if there is any artificial flavor like those found in OTC blends, I can’t taste it. It burns cool and leaves no coating in my mouth like similar blends that I have smoked. I also like the fact that it burns pretty dry not leaving much in the way of moisture in the pipe. At the current price point, this is a far better offering than any of the OTC blends like it that I have tried. Nothing fancy here, but good all the same!

Update--I submit that this is the cheapest "natural" tobacco you can buy that is any good. By "any good" I mean a tobacco which will satisfy those used to natural premium blends with little or no flavorings and little or no PG. Do not be fooled by the word "Cavendish".

This has a very subtle sweetness and aroma, from the Dutch Cavendish process, and a nutty burley presence with a decent amount of body.

It's lack of pretense and straightforward flavor without off tastes are quite attractive. The main downside for me is it must be taken slowly or "breath smoked" or else it can get bitey.
