Cornell & Diehl Poplar Camp

(3.08)
Almost 20% perique and a dash of unsweetened black cavendish are combined with Yorktown to make a Virginia/perique lover's dream blend. Much like Bayou Morning, be forewarned; the muscular presence of perique makes C&D's Poplar Camp for the stout of heart.

Rich and delicious Virginias. A moderate, but adequate, amount of Perique. The richness of the Virginias, in my opinion, would allow for a pinch more. Still, a nice balance between the two. The Black Cavendish adds depth and in the second half of the bowl a nice hint of toast. A solid blend. 3+ stars

Rich rather than strong. Full but not overpowering. Very true tobacco that flies under the radar due, I suppose, to its being offered in bulk only. Just a dash of latakia and oriental away from being a great English blend. The cavendish works wonders on the more forward virginia and perique. I am no master but I really enjoy blending at home. This doesn't tempt me at all (well, maybe a dash of
). Great smoke.

This is really a retry of one that I didn't care for new from the bag back in 2017. I picked up 8oz during a bulk sale in 2017 and tried then without it making much of an impression and jarred up at the time.

Opening the jar now, it has the aroma of a VaPer with some sweetness and a little spice.

The ribbon cut makes for easy packing. It's a mixture of darker and lighter ribbons of typical C&D length. Lighting is a breeze and it burns really well.

The taste is the same as the jar note. It delivers a fairly sweet base with a healthy note of perique added to it. It's consistent through the bowl and burns just a little hot if pushed. To my taste the perique in it makes it a medium in nicotine. I don't think I'd be up to smoking it all day.

The age has really let this one shine and I'd recommend it to any VaPer smoker.

Now I need to try Yorktown I guess for that VA element.

I ordered a couple ounces of this on a whim. Wow, what a pleasant surprise! I stumbled onto a new favorite Va/Per that smokes cool and bite-free, and has a subtle complexity.

There's a little rough edge from the perique, but in general I think this blend is a little more refined than some similar American blends I've tried recently. Full-flavored but easy to smoke, which allows the fairly strong nicotine to sneak up on you. I think the flavors of the different tobaccos in this blend create a somewhat unusual flavor for a Va/per, leading some to think it has an added topping. I think C&D came up with something special from only a few ingredients. It's a good bargain too.

Edit: I took off a star because of that rough edge. It didn"t bother me as much after just a few bowls, but after a couple ounces I don't think it should be highly recommended. Still, it's a solid VA/per and a good value.

This is a tobacco that never disappoints me. For my taste, this is one of the more approachable C&D blends (it's not harsh). I would not classify this as an aromatic or anything close to it. I don't taste any flavoring at all. I wonder if other reviewers are tasting the Cavendish when they refer to flavoring(?). I find the Virginias in this blend wonderful. The Perique is not as strong as advertised. Over all a very interesting and involved smoke that keeps me coming back for more.

Cornell & Diehl - Poplar Camp

Similar flavor profile to Bayou Morning, but in comparison the perique is less, the virginia is somewhat muted (but far from being mute!).  And then there's the black cav, unflavored and unsweetened to smooth things out a bit.

As noted in some of it's reviews, Bayou Morning can have kind of an "edge" (a quality that I find charming), I have yet to find that edge in this blend, unless it gets too dry.  It's a smoother blend, I wouldn't go so far as to say "light" as it still has some power both of nicotine and of flavor.

All in all a good va/p I have no issues with recommending.

This is definitely a Perique forward blend. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is still balanced and well blended. Shipped very dry, however, it did not seem to affect how this blend smoked. Usually a dry tobacco smokes harsh, and is difficult to get along with. Not Poplar Camp. Packs and lights easily, requires very few relights and little attention. Pairs well with any bourbon or mild scotch.

Kind of a sleeper blend, here. I wasn't expecting much - it didn't knock my socks off, but it turned out to be a nice little smoke, so it far exceeded my expectations.

To me, this smokes as a red Virginia with a bit of perique (enough to make it noticeable, but not enough that I'd smoke it if I was looking for a strong perique blend). The cavendish doesn't seem to add much, but it probably props the body up and keeps things from going flat and/or muddy late in the bowl.

PC is a straightforward blend - easy to smoke, note a biter, stays lit well and burns all the way through. It could be an all-day sort of blend in that regard. I smoked it fresh and have stuck a few ounces away in the cellar - I'm guessing that after a few years the VAs will come out and this could really sing.

Good stuff. It has a strength level that I like, which is strong. It has some type of liquor topping (I think). It's tough to describe the flavor. maybe a weaker tasting Haddos? Well, it tastes mild, but has good nic. Would buy it again.

This is as good as Haddo's. There probably is some casing, but it is not as noticeable. It's bold enough to stand up to Scotch. What a good idea! I need to go try it again.
