Borkum Riff Mixture with Bourbon Whiskey (Bronze)

(1.64)
Selected quality, bright aromatic Virginia and rich, cool smoking burley tobaccos are blended to give an exquisite taste and aroma, enhanced by the finest Kentucky bourbon whiskey traditionally matured for over eight years to develop its full complex flavour. Serious yet dynamic, Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey has a unique, captivating taste and aroma. Infused with eight year old Kentucky Bourbon, it combines the natural flavour of the tobacco with a distinctive aroma that is both traditional and discreetly masculine.
Notes: Used to be Virginia and burley. Now is Virginia and black cavendish. The new pouch description relates: The Bourbon Whiskey recipe consists of 35% black cavendish from Africa, Europe and the Philippines mixed with 65% Virginia from Brazil and Africa. And as a final treat genuine Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey is added. Due to EU regulations this is now known as "Bronze".

I first tried this tobacco around a month and a half ago. I bought a 50g pouch from my local tobacconist just to try really. I like whiskey so I thought 'Hey, I'll give it a go!'. However, when I got home, I loaded one of my pipes with it and off I went. I really did not like it. I thought it simply tasted like a very cheap VA with very little (if any!) whiskey flavour to it.

One and a half months later, I found it in my tobacco drawer and decided to give it another go. This time, I found it to be rather more pleasant. It tasted smooth and light and I even tasted a hint of whiskey! The burley and virginia are without doubt the strongest flavours in this tobacco but around half way through the bowl, I started to get some of the other cavendish flavours coming through.

All in all, not too bad a tobacco after all. It will no doubt be smoked more often just as a light aromatic when I am in the mood for that kind of thing, but I really would have liked to have tasted a little more whiskey. I find Peterson's Irish Whiskey to be generally better in terms of the whiskey flavour and general taste so I will probably stick with that!

I don't know what it is about this tobacco but I really enjoy smoking it and crave it when I'm out of it. Maybe it's because of my Swedish heritage but I have a soft spot in my heart for BR. I live in a small town and the only pipe tobaccos you can get here are the old school over the counter, drugstore brands. BR being one of them. This is a pleasant tasting blend, very mellow and I love the aroma. My only question is, why do they call this bourbon whiskey? I drink bourbon quite often and the smell and taste of this tobacco isn't that of bourbon. Actually I'm not quite sure what to call it but I do like it. I find that it has a nice sweet, rich taste but tends to get a little strong mid bowl. If you're a fan of aromatics I think you might enjoy smoking this. Give it a shot.
