I do enjoy the spicy flavor of the famous Oriental Izmir leaf. Taken with a dose of Perique and Virginia in this blend, it is simply awesome!
This cool burning blend will pack some punch without jackhammering the palate. It also has a nice sweet, "herbal" type undertone.
A true bell ringer in my book!

The golden Virginia has a strong hay flavor and very little tart and tangy citrus as the base of this production. The dry, lightly buttery sweet and very sour, mildly spicy, earthy, woody, herbal, floral Turkish/Izmir gives this blend what depth it has, and I can barely detect any spice, plums or raisins from the perique. The Izmir is the major player. Has a slightly sweet topping that doesn't sublimate the tobaccos much. The strength and nicotine levels are less than expected - a couple of steps short of the center of mild to medium. The taste is just past that center. Won't bite or get harsh, but sports a few rough edges. Burns cool and clean with a mostly consistent, mildly sweet, spicy, sour, and rather savory taste that translates to the lightly lingering after taste and room note. Requires some relights. Leaves little moisture in the bowl. Not quite an all day smoke as it does have a fair amount of punch for a manufacture that's below the medium threshold.

From the moment I popped the tin, I knew I was in for a real treat. I love Virginia's and I smoke Two Friends-Heritage in my regular rotation. Well, this is different. It is a Flake. With a hurried rub and fold, I quickly packed it in the bowl and did a charring light. Awesome, I thought! Smoked it right down to the bottom. I was surprised that I had no necessity to re-light, as I did not take the time it deserves to rub out, fold and gently pack. I was in a big hurry to smoke this blend.
Smooth, dry, cool smoking, tasty Virginia with the compliment of Turkish and Perique. Perhaps it has a touch of honey to enhance the sweetness. Certainly a no-bite, pleasant, irresitable smoke of mild character and it was very pleasing to the bottom of the bowl. This pipe had been smoked a few times already today and I was surprised the bowl was absolutely dry at the conclusion of this smoke. As soon as the bowl cooled, I was filling it up again. This is really good tobacco.
Moisture in the tin was ideal. I don't like having to dry tobacco. Picnic burns beautifully and its presentation from tin to smoke shows the skill and excellence in preparation of this blend that I have come to expect from Craig Tarler. It is pressed and sliced into perfect portions.
This Golden VA is one you can really enjoy sniffing in the tin. I may just take the tin into a non-smoking environment and sniff it where I can't smoke it! It's really that good. If you like a VA Flake, you don't want to miss this one!

Another beautiful broken flake, this one with a very heavy scent of Izmir. Loaded easily in rubbed out form or nearly as easily folded and stuffed.
Looking at the reviews, I wonder if A) the tobacco blend in my tin was not Sunday Picnic at all, or B) if there is some QC problem at C&D, causing the review scores to deteriorate. My impression was that the oriental flavor was considerably too weighty, too overblown. The perique could have been amped up somewhat and the virginias tasted positively burley-ish... very dusty and murky and with very, very little sweetness. Nic content was high. I seriously wonder if the VA in this one was actually burley. No golden va sweetness, not even the tang or grass or hay usuals. This was deep and cloudy and cigarette-ish.
I'm saving the rest of the tin and my 2nd one to see how aging treats this blend. As it stands, two stars is a gift, and I can't help but wonder if the tin is holding the correct blend. I've had this happen before with C&D. Just doesn't taste like a predominately virginia blend.

This is a great smoke. A little hay, some dark fruit, a mild sourness, a good bit of spice and sweetness. The overall flavor is very pleasing. Not sure all the sweetness is natural, might be a little addition to this. That's ok. It works very well and wouldn't be as good without it. Top notch flake. Love it.
Medium in body and flavor. If there is added sweetness it's a very mild amount. Burns very well.

Cornell & Diehl - Sunday Picnic.
Me and Gentleman Zombie have done a couple trades with one another up to now, and this is another beauty from one of them. To put it simply, I think it's brilliant!
I wouldn't class the flakes as being either broken or whole: they're breaking apart just enough to enable easy filling, yet they still have the rectangular shape of a flake. The moisture in the tin's just the right quantity to mean that it's fresh, yet not soaked, what's that word?: PERFECT!
With Cornell & Diehl, there are many things that I love, i.e. the art designs on them. But the main characteristic that makes C+D one of my favourite manufacturers is the actual smoke. This one's great: I don't find it gives to many Perique qualities at first, there's a Plum-esc taste, but not a great deal of spice. It takes a quarter of a bowl, or so, for the Perique to wake-up! A steady flavour throughout would be the Oriental/Turkish: from this, I get a good foundation for the smokes profile. This gives some more oomph to the smoke, it fills in for the lesser hit of Perique. The Virginia seems lightly added compared to the other two, it just gives a bit of build to the smoke, rather than actual flavour.
The nicotine's just above medium (to me), and I enjoy the room-note.
Franck, you've done it again, you've sent me something special!
Highly recommended.

Excited to try this. Opening Night is a personal favorite so I wanted to try something that was in the VA ballpark but a bit spicier. Sunday Picnic is the distant cousin from Louisiana who likes it spicy and likes to mix it up when visiting the Opening Night city folks.
At first I didn't know what to make of it as it was a unique flavor, so I held off on the review. Now the tin has been opened a while and the flavors starting to settle down I can say it's quite tasty and can for see it becoming a favorite. Its VA smooth, cool and tasty but has a ZING and a PING to it. It's more than the Perique that adds a POP of pepper.. its the Turkish and Izmir that throws the "different" into this unique mix. The Nic will put hairs on the chest for sure. Love it. I believe the room note will be a bit hard for others so its best to find some alone time or you could be in the doghouse. Smoke it slow and savor the flavor of this unique blend from Cornell & Diehl. It's a winner. Cool… tasty… Zing and a Ping!

This is a masterpiece. Simply Elegant is the right description for this blend. I think VA/Izmir/Perique is one of the finest tobacco combinations possible and this blend nails it. The Izmir is often forward here. It is sour with a mild spice. I get a wonderful pine needle aroma from the smoke. The bright Virginia offers its usual hay notes and the Perique is figgy and peppery. On the whole the blend is more savory than sweet. It pairs delightfully with a morning coffee. Strength is medium with a bit of a kick but can be smoked any time of day.

A go-to flake for me. If this was the only tobacco I had to smoke, I would be happy.
Very nice on a spring or summer day. Puts me in the same mind as a citrus-y drink with some bitters, like Campari and grapefruit/orange or something.
Just prior to opening my current tin of SP and writing this, I calibrated my tastebuds to the taste of Izmir by smoking a tin of McClelland Smyrna No. 1, which includes a leaf in the tin. Sniff, sniff, Izmir is very herbal and aromatic and I have to say that being strongly so, it is best used as a condiment. It works amazingly well with perique, as in Sunday Picnic. In fact, being a little overwhelmed by the strength of the Izmir in the McClelland blend, I mixed it 50/50 with their Top Hat (a VA/Per with a good amount of perique) to create a facsimile of Sunday Picnic/Red Carpet, which worked really well, but not nearly as well as how C&D does it.
In sum, the Izmir in Sunday Picnic is quality and in perfect proportion to the other tobaccos, and did I mention that I love Izmir and perique? It adds a balmy, herbal taste that ramps up to nuttiness and spice towards the end of the bowl, joining with the spice of the perique and the virginias.
C&D's bright virginias are some of my favorites, I like the light citrus notes and solid earthy tobacco taste here.
Have smoked tins of Sunday Picnic of different age, from about five years to fresh. Always good, but aged like that it is completely sublime. Best with a minimum of six months or so of age.

To me, this is a mild Virginia (broken) flake with a sprinkling of Orientals for some nuance. There is a softness to the blend - both the texture of the tobacco and the flavor - which reminds me of an expensive towel. If you lay that towel down on the grass under the shade of a tree you can enjoy this unassuming blend on a hot summer day. Maybe with some lemonade, or the honeyed ice tea my wife makes. Actually, there may be a touch of honey in the blend - cannot tell if it was added or is just naturally suggested by the Virginias (which are on the brighter side). Regardless, everything about this brings to mind "just a touch" - of this, that, or the other thing people here usually read into nice Virginia blends. I would just add "toasty."
Do not smoke this if you're expecting an alluring interplay of Turkish spice (see Embarcadero for that) or a study in the subtle complexities of Virginia (Opening Night). Maybe this will change with age, but I doubt it. It's nice.
P.S. There is apparently perique somewhere in this blend.

This is a classic for the VA/Per fans. I basically feel the same way about Sunday Picnic as I do Red Carpet. This is not surprising as the blends are in fact the same proportions of Virginia/Turkish/Perique with the only difference being that Sunday Picnic uses golden Virginia, whereas... Red Carpet uses (you guessed it) red Virginia. For many years the blends that make up the Simply Elegant series have been a favorites of mine and are well-represented in my cellar. Both Sunday Picnic and Red Carpet are medium-strong and full of flavor. A dedicated Virginia smoker could probably make due with just these two blends! Strength, spice, salty-sweetness and cool burn. I tend to appreciate Sunday Picnic during the day (or during the warmer months), and Red Carpet in the evenings after dinner due to the slightly richer flavor profile. To my tastes Sunday Picnic is (of course) brighter and the Turkish shines with the Perique in the supporting role, whereas it is pretty much all about the Perique in Red Carpet, with the Turkish adding enough to keep the blend from being “just another VA/Per”. Both blends are must-haves and age incredibly!

On my initial look, Sunday Picnic's contents seemed mostly similar to Embarcadero--Virginias and Smyrna, or Izmir (depending on your preference), in a flake form. I haven't tried Embarcadero and was thinking about it until I compared the reviews. Sunday Picnic had a wealth of praise, even more than Embarcadero, which I decided to push back to a later time.
I should say that this was my first experience with the newer C&D flakes (the much older Bayou Morning Flake was an early, favorite smoke), and they do it differently, which I like. The thick flakes look beautiful lined up in the protective sleeve, their squarish shape perfectly sized to the C&D two ounce tin. It's a very light press, and they fall apart easily upon handling, reminiscent of Penzance. I can't say whether C&D flakes will get firmer over time, but it's a welcome change, and it's nice to see something other than a ribbon or a compressed ribbon crumble cake. My only complaint would be the paper insert, which embeds little white shards in the tobacco, and can be a pain to fish out of the flakes. I noticed that the newer Samuel Gawith tins also have this problem, and it's annoying.
This blend has some strength to it, though not quite overpowering, certain to give you a nic jolt in a larger bowl. It's rather sweet, though not so much as McClelland's Tudor Castle, another blend that does the Virginia/Turkish/Perique combo very well (and the first to get me on this mix). I've found the Perique there more for power than taste, and having missed its inclusion while reading the tin description, had a bit of an "ahah!" moment while scouring the reviews. The components are enough to vary the flavor through the smoke, beginning with familiar hay-like notes, and deepening as the sugars caramelize into a toasty, slow burning explosion of complimentary flavors, the Turkish leaf contributing a bit of spiciness, but mostly restrained.
Now, with my Sunday Picnic finished, I'm off to Union Square, and I suspect there will be more stops down the line.
Five of Five.

Don't let the tin note stop you, yes, it smells like a barnyard. The moisture level is pretty high and I found that it packed and burned better with a little dry time. Once burning, if you take it slow, you will be treated to a smoke that bounces back and forth between a creamy sweet taste and then a peppery tingle on the palate. If you puff too vigorously you will miss out on the suttle nuiancies and get more of a one dimensional smoke of medium strength. This will not be a daily or all day smoke for me and I can't see that it would fit it into that category for many, but for if you are looking for that unique occasional smoke that rewards the process of perpetration, packing, and cadence then I highly recommend giving this a try.

Sunday picnic is a pretty good name for this one.. kind of what you would expect.. a light and bright spring/summer driven taste.. pretty crisp on the palette.. Sweet hay/citrus with just a touch of spice from the turkish and perique.. the Virginia is way in the lead here.. and it burns pretty hot as you might expect.. I consider it a thin walled billiard sipper if ever there was one.. it does not overwhelm in flavor or strength.. while this could certainly work in its favor during hot weather, I don't think it is one that i would reach for on a daily basis.. when I'm in the virginia mood 9 times out of 10 i like a tangier deeper red Virginia.. got one in the cellar.. definitely thinking 5+ years on this would do wonders.

Cracked this open today and was immediately entranced but the wonderful smell of Virginia and Perique a spicy and floral tin note to be sure.
Rubbed this out thoroughly and loaded it up knowing that this was going to be a good one. From first light the Virginia takes off with a wonderful sweet flavor and then in swoops the perique warming the mouth up and balancing the Virginia nicely. About mid bowl I need to relight, and got the Virginias to come through again almost to for the rest of the bowl. The Perique seemed to take a back note from then on, could be I just got use to it.
Try as I might, I didn't get a lot of the oriental flavor I thought I would get. It is there to be sure but that tangy sour seemed to get lost in the spicy Perique.
Mechanically, there was no bite to the blend at all. It was pretty well behaved with few relights and burned to the bottom with little to no dottle left. Might need to make another order of this one soon. A few more bowls might convince me to make this a four star review and put it in regular rotation.

Another of the Simply Elegant series I have been enjoying of late, this is a very fine tobacco. It is a ribbon flake pressed and then sliced composed of brown to dark brown tobaccos. I like it best if I rub out the flakes and leave out for a few days to dry. It is fine right out of the tin but is fantastic if allowed to dry some. When the tin is opened, the tin note is very sweet smelling and fresh, and my mouth waters when I sniff it. It packs well and is easy to light. It burns down mice and cool with a cigar ash colored ash and burns dry to the bottom of the bowl. The room note is very pleasant, at least to me, and it has a sweet full flavor on the tongue with just a hint of spice from the perique. The Turkish gives it a full body but the lightness and sweet flavor of the Virginia comes shining through.
This is a very nice blend and one that I am enjoying very much. It could easily be an all day blend. I highly recommend it.

My first tin of this was when I fell in love with a turk spiked vapor. The tin note is of hay and spice and everything nice. I find myself craving this tobacco and comparing other VaPer blends to it. The Red Carpet blend is similar to this but I find that it lacks the spice and has a harder nic hit. Although I enjoy them both this has been my favorite blend in the elegant series and a close first by c&d as a whole. Also, this flake seems to hold together better than other c&d flakes.

The tobacco looked very attractive with a very nice tin note as well. It rubbed out easily, packed effortlessly and took light with ease.
The first quarter of the pipe was a bit on the harsh/sharp side. Probably the Virginias, but lacking the sweetness I was expecting. It actually felt more like a Burley based smoke initially. I didn't get much of the Perique either. Halfway through the bowl, she calmed down and mellowed out, with the Perique becoming subtly apparent, and a slight sweetness making an appearance along with a very nice nutty flavor. Toward the end of the bowl, the Perique really shined, ever so slightly spicy and just right.
Had the entire smoke been like the first quarter, I would have given it about one and one half stars. Perhaps some aging would eliminate the harshness I experienced initially. After the smoke settled down, it was quite enjoyable with more than a few flavors bouncing around the palate. It smoked quite cool, with zero dottle, but I did feel a very slight tongue bite when finished.
All in all a pleasant smoke made with quality tobaccos. It has just the right amount of nicotine in my opinion to elicit a relaxed mood, and a desire to smoke it whilst perched in a leather recliner as opposed to an all day smoke.
It will not be going into my rotation, but I can definitely see it as an occasional revisit when I open my cellar and want something different. Nice tobacco, this.
Update: I let this one dry out a bit in the tin, got zero tongue bite this time around, but it did seem to dry my mouth out. As mentioned in many other reviews, definitely the hay aroma and flavor going on (quite pleasant actually) with a bit more sweetness than when first tried. This one appears to be growing on me a bit.
Update again: After even more time in the tin, this smoke is steadily grabbing my affections. I find myself alternating it occasionally with my McClelland's Blackwoods Flake which is saying a lot. This is a superior blend and worthy of mention. I have just ordered an 8 ounce tin and extend a bravo and a handshake to Craig Tarler the blender of this outstanding offering. Upgraded to 4 solid stars! Amazing... As Craig Tarler has apparently passed away and left us at the age of 82, I hope he has shared his craft with a worthy study who will continue the fine tradition and art of blending.

I bought a tin of this almost 2 years ago and ever since it has been throwing the easy going of a sunday picnic at me every time I visit my baccy cellar. Once opened I found the baccy to be perfect in moisture and presented beautifully. After rubbing out slightly it took two matches to light up and burned strait down leaving a fine gray ash. This is one of those smokes that I can't just put my finger on exactly. I picked up the hay, sweetness with a bit of spice here and there. Nothing was over powering just a fine balance with a little complexity that will keep you coming back for more. The nicotine was their but not over powering for me, and I experienced 0 tongue bite. Overall SP is one that I will keep on hand at all times and it very well could be an all day smoke.

Having read all these positive opinions, I bought a 50g can of this tobacco. Good stuff, it went in a few days, and I have still no clear ideas about it. So I bought another tin, to make a deeper aquaintance with Sunday Picnic. Unfortunately, after a few days the tin was empty again! So I got the third tin, and this time with no doubts I could be sure it is a good tobacco. The problem with Sunday Picnic is that the 50g are keen on disappearing automagically, or the tin has an hole in it which I cannot spot. Otherwise I wouldnt explain why the tobacco vanishes so quickly.
This said.. I have smoked several tins of this tobacco. I would define it a "full smoke", very rich in taste, spicy, linear from beginning to the end, tobacco will burn to white ashes entirely. I remind, there is no latakia here. The oriental Izmir Turkish is complementary to the perique, rounding the taste and making the virginia literally shine. It is one of the best tobacco I have ever smoked, and I tested more than 200 so far. This is memorable, and the fact it is so good explains why once you have open the tin you will smoke it bowl after bowl without feeling the need to rotate.
It is not a mild tobacco, on the contrary it is certainly tasteful and medium strong. I could not find a similar tobacco among those I have smoked. Many Virginia Perique blends are excellent, like Dunhill DeLuxe or Davidoff , but this is just another story, so much better.
I smoke it in the pipe I keep for VaPer blends. It is excellent also in corncobs ! It comes in broken flakes, but I strongly suggest you do rub it, rolling it with fingers until it is well rubbed and more "broken", and simply plug it in the bowl. It does not need to be relighted once burning, if rolled correctly.

I had lied to them. I told them we were braving the zombie hoards for food and water, but the truth was I had caught word of a seller at what was once our local mall who had a stash of tobacco, Sunday Picnic to be exact. I needed this tobacco, my only vice and last sin in life. I didn't care that I was lying to the 3 men with me, they had been nothing but trouble since the beginning. Stealing food and water, skimming off the top wherever they could... I couldn't prove it, but I knew they were doing it. I was tired of my living situation in that plaza with those greedy idiots.
The four of us, prepared for our run to the mall, including Tommy, Jim's nephew Lil. Jim and the Bull dyke Claudette. I was in lead of the run, so i was best armed; 2 pistols and a shot gun... Nothing was gonna stand between me and the pipe! We snuck out of the plaza, hoping that the zombies wouldn't see us. But this was wishful thinking once Lil Jim decided to fart and laugh about it. I couldnt believe it, a 24 year old farting at a time like this. I was glad that he got his kicks in, cause i was going to kill him first. The zombies began to come at us after Lil Jim's stunt and soon found dozens of zombies bearing down on us. As the zombies came closer, I knew we needed to slow them down, There weren't enough bullets to go around. So I did what I had to, I shot Lil Jim in the leg and let the zombies take that annoying fool as lunch so that we could make it out of there. As we kept running, blowing zombies out of our path we arrived, 2 miles later at the mall, safely behind a tall metal fence.
We sat outside the mall as we took a water break. The bull dyke was starting to get on my nerves with her short cut hair and tanktop. She looked like GI Jane, and it pissed me off. She had begun to poke at me for what I did to Lil Jim, told me i was wrong and she was going to tell on me. I told her to shove it, because it was his fault that the zombies saw us in the first place and he had been complaining non-stop since i had met him. It was his time to go. After I told her to shut up, she mockingly bowed to me and said "As you wish, your majesty."... I wasn't going to tolerate that, so as she got up from her bow, I blew her brains out with my .45 Glock. Tommy stared at me, looking like he was gonna piss himself, he began to reach for his gun, but I pointed mine at him first. "Dont even think about it" I said to the rat. I had no respect for Tommy, he had been skimming food and water for months and played around too much. His time would come soon.
As we stepped into the mall, we reached the dealer. I tried to get the tobacco, but he could obviously tell that I was desperate because of my first request for tobacco. Tommy began to fuss about the lie that I had told about food and water. The Merchant there told me the steep price for the pipe and tin of my favorite sin, i told him i would trade him for Tommy. Tommy fussed, but i disarmed him and threw him in the direction of the merchant, once the pipe and tobacco were on the table I painted the wall with the merchant's brains, ending him with a saturday night special. At this point his body guard jumped at me, but not before I could stick a tanto knife through his heart. Tommy had started to run screaming, about to bring every zombie within 10 miles this way. He had gained about 100 yards, but I knew I could get him from here. With my pistol i took steady aim and put him down at 150 yards. He went down without a fight, the coward. After that i found some Pabst Blue Ribbon hidden away in the merchant's den and drank and smoked my heart out, and all was well in the world.

Not sure what the big deal is with this one. Granted, I've only tried a few VaPers so far, but this just seems too dry and harsh for the flavor that IS good in it, even if I sip it slow.
EDIT: On a much later second run, this stuff ain't so bad after all. Upgraded to 3/4.
EDIT: On later runs, it's still good, but I've had better VA/Or/Per blends. There's a certain nasal note that I can't pinpoint, but it's just weirds me out. It also just doesn't seem to agree with me for some reason. 2/4 final
If you're like me in your feelings for this blend, but still want to have a VA/Or/Per blend, then try McClelland's PCCA Tudor Castle. It's fantastic. Nothing against Sunday Picnic -- it just doesn't agree with me.

A lovely blend that checks a lot of boxes for me in the VaOrPer genre. The spice from the orientals blends rather nicely with the fruity tones of the perique. The VA supports the two beautifully with an earthy haylike butter sweetness and a bit of a honey note. There's a dimension of incense to this blend which some may find rather enjoyable and others may not be much of a fan of. But it's very clearly present to me and I enjoy it. But I guess that's part of the deal with VaOrs.
My tin came with a year already on it and that's always a nice bonus. There are still a few edges to the blend that I think will disappear at the 2-3 year mark, but they're distant at a year. Standard C&D tin pricing on this which places it in the perfectly reasonable purchase category.
This isn't really an "all day" smoke for me; the incense gets overwhelming if one does too many bowls in a row. But that's fine, it gives a great change of pace from my normal VA/VaPer fare. I think I'll be adding 4 or 5 tins of this a year to the cellar to age out and have a nice stockpile to draw from in the future.
A Highly Recommend blend if you're a fan of the genre and an easy cellar choice for me personally.

C&D Sunday Picnic
This blend part of the simply elegant series truly is as the name says simply elegant.
I thought this blend would be an overpowering flake of orientals and Turkish and would force the VA’s and Perique to hide in the background never to be tasted.
The exact opposite happened to me, unless I just grab the parts of the broken flake that had primarily Va’s and perique, as the flavor was primarily this.
As stated previously this flake arrives somewhat broken and easy to pull apart, which makes folding and stuffing much easier, my preferred method of smoking flakes. This blend lit easily and needed one relight probably more so my fault than the blend.
The VA’s are yellow and bright with a sweet flavor and the Perique is figgy and peppery giving me a slight nose tingle that I welcome gladly. The orientals are there but I rarely noticed them on occasion but never overshadowed anything.
With age this blend could be an even bigger all-star, Fresh out of the tin it’s great also. If Elizabethan left tomorrow as it did before this would be my replacement.
I will get a few more tins to age. I give this three stars, but would rate 3.5/4 total.

My ususal and all time favorite Virginia Perique blend is Escudo - been smoking this since my first years in college around 1972. But I like to have a little strange every once in a while so several years back I purchased several tins of Cornel & Diehl's Sunday Picnic. I was not impressed - no taste, hot and with that typical virginia "grassy" taste of a young tobacco. So I thought to myself this blend may just need some aging to take the edge off the Virginia.
I put two tins in the back of my pipe cabinet - that was February 2012. This year one of my daughters gave me a pipe for Christmas, so while I was arranging things in the cabinet I found this can of Sunday Picnic. Wow says me this stuff is really old - so I immediately grabbed a deep bowl pipe to try it out.
I popped the lid and all I could smell was the scent of dried apricots - marvelous I thought as I decided on a pipe, started to drool and headed for the bottle of cognac. The color was a golden brown caramel, no mold and not too wet. I grabbed a couple of pieces and rolled it between my fingers - taking in the fantastic aroma. I packed it with a moderate amount of pressure and lit it up. After an initial charing and a light tamp the tabacco lit easily and burned evenly with a steady draw on the pipe.
At first I couldnt detect the perique and just barely could smell the Ismir Turkish - it was all virginia. About halfway into the bowl the turkish and perique taste arose taking the lead over the virginia - from there on out it was a waltz between the perique, turkish and virginia - simply fantastic. The flavor continued to increase all the way to the bottom of the pipe. The residual ash was light gray and dry. Nicotene content was mild.
Although I'm not going to walk away from Escudo - this tin of Sunday Picnic was a nice surprise that I attribute to the cellaring. I don't know that it's necessary to age it as long as I did - but just about any Virginia will improve with a little time.
As of this posting I've had 5 bowls in 3 different pipes all of which are at least 35 years old. I'm puffing on my 6th bowl as I write this and just as soon as I'm finished I plan on ordering several more cans so I can lose them in the back of the pipe cabinet and be surprised at another Chrismas years from now.

I was ready to be disappointed by this - C&D blends are hit-and-miss for me - but this was a stunning smoke. Grassy, sweet, floral - befitting its 'picnic' name. I was also happy that it didn't come overly dry in the tin, as all the other C&D flakes I've tried seem to. It's good to smoke straight from the tin, but has enough moisture to prevent a pipe inferno.

Purchased a tin in September 2012, it was my first Va-Per blend. Many of you spoke very well about this tobacco, so I was encouraged by your opinions.
Man… if a Va-Per blend smells and taste like (or better than) this, I will cellar more tins for sure!
Tin-note : piquant, peppery, tangy, sweet, fizzy, nose-tickling, undefinable, kind of extravirgin olive oil, oriental note that, according to the label, is the Izmir leaf.
In the bowl : a good balance between the hay / grass character of fresh golden Virginias and the particular spiciness both of the Turkish and of the Perique used.
It’s really, really tasty. I got pleasant note of orange zest quite often, especially when exhaling through the nose.
It smokes cool, dry and slow : you won’t disappear in thick clouds of smoke.
It lights up pretty easily and the taste evolves with a nice spectrum of bright, lively shades.
Nice fat tasty flakes overall. I’ll surely purchase more of it when I will get more familiar with this kind of blends.
Cheers Everyone, Brandr ODS

A great smooth blend perfect for mid day. To me a great Virginia blend that is suited for the mid afternoon as it is not so strong and has a agreeable aroma for outside. The flavour of smooth Virginias mixed with a slight black pepper note from the Perique and aueromatics from the Turkish bodes well for a mild smoke on Sunday or any given relaxed afternoon.

I am smoking through a large sample of this using a GBD Prehistoric Pot. This is good, and I am enjoying it. It tastes like mild Turkish base with Virginia to fill it out. The perique is a applied with a light hand, and it does not contribute much to the signature. There is no doubt this is made with quality tobaccos, but it does not punch my buttons. I don't detect any topping at all. I may warm up to it, and sometimes a blend of this sort benefits from a dedicated pipe. I could smoke this every day, but I am not likely to buy a tin.

Gaining some experience by "trialing by error" with C&D, I would like to share my impressions when it comes to approaching C7D and G.L. Pease blends. As for Exhausted Rooster, I tested a brand new 2 oz tin of SP, then I let the other one age for over a year before opening. The results are dramatically different. The brand new tin offered a tabacco that was way too wet, had a harsh taste, didn't taste much and bite like a SOB. I can't say that I enjoyed it. But with the second one, I was facing a totally different ball game. The VA, Izmir and Per had time to adhere together, revealing a gorgeous mixture of sweetness, spiciness and smokininess that was thouroughly enjoyable. As with ER, this is a rather rich, tasty and strong tobacco that is pleasant if you like a good level of nicotine.

EDIT 2/3/2020
5 yrs ago I must have forgot that I took 2 ounces and jarred it right after opening the 8 oz tin. In 2014, my cellar was quickly becoming a disorganized mess, so this makes complete sense. When I started getting organized a few years later, I was excited to find the jar.
Well, I recently popped the jar after a 7 year nap and it was really wonderful. The sweetness from the Virginia leaf had intensified, the sour of the Izmir toned down and the Perique was still light. If I had to rate based on aging I would likely go back to the 4 stars I started this one at, but I don't know if that is a fair way of rating the tobacco as it seems most people do not age their tobacco.
If you are looking to store some away and age it, this one is a fine candidate and I would certainly recommend it.
EDIT 11/26/2014
After finishing off an 8 ounce tin of this, I still think this is a great blend. There is a nice sweetness to it from the Virginias which seem to be the star in all the "simply elegant series" blends. The Izmir takes that hay like sweetness in another direction and I find the Perique subtle but hardy enough to give it a good nicotine kick.
I am knocking a star off though as I have recently had the luxury of trying HU's Flanagan which I enjoy more. It is similar in that it contains Virginia, Oriental and Perique. I am not sure of which orientals that blend is comprised, but it is a better tasting smoke IMO. While I still recommend SP for both its availability and price which is substantially cheaper than the German alternative, I can't say I am as enthusiastic in my recommendation at this time. And besides, I have way too many four star reviews and should narrow that down some.
Original Review 6/18/2012
I really enjoyed this blend. I think it worthy of the four star rating it is currently carrying. I do think that this would be better in a dedicated pipe however as it is susceptible to tasting a little like the last thing you smoked even when the last thing you smoked is not something known for ghosting of pipes. This is why i have put the taste at mild.

I really wanted to experience what others have said about this tobacco, but I can't. Maybe it's chemistry, maybe it's technique, but this just burns so hot and spicy that I can't enjoy this tobacco. My story started about 6 months ago when I purchased my first tin and had a few bowls, these were hot. I resealed the tin ( tip: try a hot glue gun to seal your tins) . After 6 months, I just tried a few more bowls from a cob after allowing 2 hours of drying, still spicy hot. I couldn't sip this any slower, ended up at a 1 1/2 hour pipe of "Tobassco". I've enjoyed many Vapers and have not had trouble with Perique before so I suspect the "Izmir". Has anyone else experienced this?( maybe reviewers "Katharsis", "Jason" below)? I can't give this a high review, although it looks like quality tobacco, sorry
Updated 6/8/12- This tin now has almost two years on it and it has smoothed out and is very flavorful. It still has some spice ( Izmir ?) with the first half of the bowl and I feel it smokes better fully dried , but I will move this to 3 stars.

Opening the tin, the first thing I notice is the pungent Izmir. There is a noticeable sharp, cheesy aroma that I’ve gotten from orientals before. While it may be off putting for some, for me it’s a sign that the blend is going to be quite flavorful. You can also strongly smell the fruity, tangy Virginias.
Upon lighting, the Virginias are very sweet. They have a very nice dark fruit flavor. There’s also a bit of grass as well. Beneath that, you can taste the herbal and incensey oriental. The incense really shines in the finish, and adds to the overall sweetness of the blend. The perique seems to be quite muted, and adds only a bit of spice.
When I first tried this, I was expecting it to taste primarily like a VaPer with only a bit of oriental, but the Virginias and orientals are definitely the main players. It has the sweetness and smoothness of a full VA blend with the added dimensions of the orientals. Interestingly, when I go back out to the patio after I’ve smoked a bowl of this, I get an almost cotton candy like aroma from the tobacco, which is why I rated the room note as pleasant. Quite possibly the most pleasant smelling non-aromatic blend I’ve ever smelled. I’d definitely recommend this to anybody looking for a sweeter non-aromatic blend.

In few mixtures I have seen as in this one that there is so much difference in the way of perceiving it among the smokers who have tried it. I have heard somewhere and I have also read in a review on this page that this tobacco has undergone some changes since it was born until now. That would explain the disparity of perceptions and descriptions that people make of this mix. Here's mine, one more to add to the confusion.
The cold smell of this tobacco is spectacular ... as long as you like strong cheese. Because the aroma that gives off ferment reminds me of Cabrales cheese, or a strong blue cheese, very rich for my taste. This indicates that the amount of perique it has is not negligible. But there is no need to worry because that strong smell is not reproduced later in the flavor when lighting the pipe. It comes slightly damp but this does not prevent it from burning well by charging it immediately.
Once the pipe is lit, the Orientals do not stand out as much as I expected after reading some reviews on this page, although it is true that the spice of the Izmir leaf is felt. Nothing to do in this regard with blends such as Cairo (GL Pease), or Ascanian (Dan Tobacco), to mention blends with the same ingredients, where the least amount of perique allows the Orientals to stand out, giving it a much more perfumed and aromatic nuance to the mix. In Sunday Picnic the orientals go perfectly with the virginia and the perique, the latter being, in my opinion, the one that goes half a step ahead, but always hand in hand with the other two, giving rise to a sweet, spicy and frankly rich fruity.
In my opinion, a great tobacco. It only took one smoking pipe of this tobacco and I was already buying more tin.
05/22/2012: I am smoking a tin from May 2012 (just over 10 years old) and it has nothing to do with the one I had previously smoked for seven months. With this new experience, the questions that “Cuenta Emerita” formulated in its review of 02/20/2013 arise, especially considering that the dates of your tin and mine seem to coincide in time. In addition, new questions arise: Which of my experiences do I have to base my rating on this tobacco on? Does it age so badly? Did this tobacco change over time? Did I and my palate change? Anyway, I have two other tins that I bought because I liked them a lot and that I will open in due time to compare, but for now I am lowering a star.

Very interesting blend. When you open the tin you are pervaded by the typical countryside smells, wet grass, wet earth, manure... Well it is in some ways the kind of smells you have during a picnic on Sunday!
The tobacco is very nice, sweet and spicy. The izmir really gives that additional flavor tone to the golden virginia, that is zesty a just a bit sweet. the Perique add some dark cocoa and coffee note and little spicyiness on the tongue. In turn a very well made and balanced mixture, probably one of the best tobacco of the entire C&D catalogue.

Im still beginning my journey through non brazilian tobacco.
This one presented the best tin aroma I ever smelled, completely addicting with rich plum notes. The smoking is pleasant and very sweet, it makes me wonder if there isn't any flavoring in there. I enjoyed it but it could be more complex and less delicate.
__________________________________________________________________________
I read in many places that this must have some aromatics, also smelt it too. It's truth indeed. After resting in jar for about a month, much of the red fruits aroma is gone. The perique and the Izmir became much more prevalent, very interesting, a month in a Jar made this a completely different smoke, much less sweet and a lot more spicy and herbal.

As this gets older the more I dislike it. The first half of bowl is almost tasteless. Also agree with the ones who taste Burley in this... even more than the VAs actually.

Sunday Picnic is one of the tastiest VA/Per & Oriental infused tobaccos I've ever tried. The combination of tobaccos meld together very well after the first 1/3 burns off to deliver one of the tastiest smokes of this genre. The apportionment of the various types of tobaccos seem to be just right to create a remarkable, well rounded flavor. If Yenidje, rather than Izmir leaf were used, it would taste similar to McClelland's Tudor Castle... another extremely tasty oriental blend that is "Gone With The Wind." Well, "That's The Way Love Goes."
It doesn't get much better than this & the oriental adds an extra dimension that creates a unique, well rounded flavor that will leave most pipers craving for more. This mixture smokes cool & won't bite. Although not overly abundant, there is enough Lady N in this mix to add plenty of extra pleasure to an after picnic dinner. Needless to say, C & D are "crafty" blenders. Many fine blends circulating & this Simply Elegant series is aptly named. This stuff will keep calling you back for more... especially if you're not too nitpicky & enjoy "picnicking," especially with a pretty young lady who knows how to "cook."
Back in 2010, Craig Tarler responded to an email I sent him shortly after this blend hit the market & thanked me for complimenting C & D on this Sunday Picnic blend & appreciated that I left a good review. I smoked both of my tins in less than a week and went back for more. I still love it to this day. I think it's a great value... around thirty $$ for 1/2 lb. I think I became more addicted to the flavor than the tobacco itself. Try it! You'll like it. I couldn't possibly comprehend why a piper wouldn't like it.

It’s fair to declare one’s taste before reviewing: I am not into Orientals/Turkish that much, and can hardly stand EMs. So what is the right amount of Izmir in a VA based? It’s this!
The tin aroma is WOW! One of those weeds that you keep opening and closing to smelli it again and again, and repeatedly pass it to your fellows with those “Smell it! You gotta smell ths! Cmon smell it!!” that make you look like a weirdo...
This is a flake but an easy one, not too pressed, not too wet, not too greasy. Nice dark color overall.
I love how the Orientals lead the dance from the tin to the puffs. And the mixture is well balanced because the taste of the Golden Virginia is never shadowed by the companions, including Perique -which dosage is absolutely perfect for my buds.
I agree that during the bowl you get a certain burley sense (which I like). Perique is always there and gives a nice picantry which I guess is crucial to the mixture - (yes, it is nice but it would probably be too flat without it).
No bite, no harsh, good for every moment.

The 11 year old, very swollen tin emitted a long whoosh when I opened it. The tin note is reminiscent of Ivory Soap and vinegar. Do not be dissuaded , it does not permeate into the smoking experience. The broken flakes have turned very dark. I was surprised how moist they were after 11 years. I spread some on a plate, and left them alone so they would dry.
Four hours later, it was ready. The tobacco lit easily. It’s tangy, slightly sweet, spicy and moderately sour. I sensed citrusy notes, wood, and some fermented sweetness.
The nicotine level is slightly above mild. It’s a tad less than medium in body/taste. It does not get harsh, and burns at a moderate pace. It smoked well in a cob as well as various size briars.
Sunday Picnic is comprised of high quality tobaccos. It’s a decent non-latakia VaOr, and I will smoke it again. However, there are better VaOr blends that I would recommend first. 3 stars

This is a wonderful tobacco. The Virginia's upfront provide hay like sweetness throughout smoke while the oriental provides nutty, herbal and musty notes that balance the blend nicely. Perique spiciness is obvious but never dominating. The Orientals are never as close to the forefront as they are in McClelland's Grand Orientals series. This is primarily a VA flake but it is one of the most well balanced blends I have ever smoked. An instant favorite for a fan of VA and Oriental.

This is by far the best blend I have yet tried from C&D. The components come together very nicely with a nice hint of nicotine that will not knock your socks off as some other blends would. The moisture level right out of the tin might require drying time for some. But it isn't too difficult to light if you just can't wait. I have had some C&D blends that were drier than dead leaves, but this is hardly the case here. I would give this a highly recommended rating.

Cigarette tasted tobacco. it reminds me Turkish Pipe Tobacco but without fig taste. TPT factory is located in aprovince of Izmir. probably they use same IZmır (Smyrna) tobacco in SP. I can honestle say SP is the TPT with perique. Spicy perique giggles my nose.

I was thinking the would just be another VA flake blend. I am not a big fan of OGS or Dunhill flake. But this flake proved me wrong. It has a lot of good flavor and the perique really shines. Excellent blend.

Opening the tin released a symphony of rich, clean, delicious scents. I didn't expect to love this one as much as C&D's Opening Night, but I think I like it more! There is a cavalcade of flavor waiting in every bowl, especially if smoked slowly. There wasn't any bite at all. I rubbed it out and it lit and stayed lit. I folded it and it was almost as easy to light and keep lit. Moisture was perfect right out of the tin. The perfect tobacco, in my opinion, is one that can be smoked all day without overloading the palate and without bite. I have smoked this blend in an array of Peterson system pipes. At first I tried small bowls, then I discovered that this blend is delicious in a larger bowl too, without being overwhelming. Sunday Picnic is on my short list of perfect tobacco. I just placed an order for a bunch of this stuff. Outstanding!
February 12, 2016 Update: I am going through some of my past reviews just to see if further experience with smoking each blend over time. Several pounds later this is still an amazing blend. It has everything I want and nothing I don't.

My idea of a Sunday Picnic is sweet pickles, carrot sticks, cucumber salad, potato salad, cold fried chicken, a nice bottle of sparkling white wine (not too sweet), a piece of pie to top things off, and my sweetheart to share it all with.
This blend did not deliver all of these particular flavors BUT it does consistently deliver a very elegant treat to the palate across the spectrum of sweet (matured VA) and spicy, all WONDERFULLY balanced and delicious from the top of the bowl to the bottom. Rub out gently, pack inverted and let rest for a few hours (the day before is best) before firing up.
This is a prince of a blend and deserving of all the stars possible. Keep some on hand. Highly recommended.

The tin aroma on this one is brilliant and balanced. Tangy new mown hay, sweet overripe figs, warm raisins in buttered oatmeal, moderate Perique presence, spicy, pancake batter, malt extract, dried lemon zest, cocoa powder. All balanced as perfectly as the one-legged winner of an ass kicking contest. I would love to be in the blending room at C&D when this stuff is being made.
I light this stuff up and it blows me away. The Golden Virginia is sweet and tangy, lemon grass and hot cereal. With just enough Perique, and the Turkish tobacco's sweet, salt-air flavor, It's different, it's delicious. Complex and just darn tasty.
Definitely one of my new favorites. If I could give it 5-Stars I would.

I normally like to wait a while before reviewing a blend but this one jumped out at me as having all the things I like about a tobacco. Sunday Picnic is a quality, flake tobacco that has that C&D "spongy" feel to it. It needs a tad drying out before packing, then lights easily and produces plenty of quality smoking pleasure. It reminds me of Dunhill's Early Morning - but better (less harsh). Previous reviewers do a better job than I at describing the taste, but the components listed in the tin description are exactly what you'll experience when you try this blend. I have a feeling this is going to be a big seller and hopefully be around a long time for us to enjoy.

When I popped the lid on my tin of Sunday Picnic I found that the flakes had already broken into 3/16 to 1/4 inch strands and these were still a bit moist. I found it smoked best when I let a loaded pipe sit out in the air for 45 minutes or so.
As I normally smoke C&D Bayou Morning as a first smoke of the day I was expecting a VaPer experience - classic Va and Perique with some Turkish notes. What I got at first light was a blend in which all three components seemed in equally weighed roles. I did not expect that as that is what I assessed sibling blend Red Carpet to be a VAPer with the Izmir in condiment quantity.
If a pipe blend could be considered food, Sunday Picnic would be gourmet fare. It is aptly named as both elegant and worthy of leisurely Sunday afternoon enjoyment. While Red Carpet with its Red VAs is sweet, Sunday Picnic with its Golden VAs is a robust VAPer with the initial taste reminding me of blend containing a Thracian rather than something from Smyrna. But what do I know? I got a taste of well-cured Kalamata olives (which I love).
This is a wonderful offering obviously blended by someone who loves his art. I can only handle this a once or twice a week however. Not that it is bad, it is great. But it for me at least requires the respect of full attention and unrushed enjoyment. I will be buying more if that helps this stumbling review.

When I reach for a tobacco that has no latakia this is the one. The golden VA's along with the perique, and izmer turkish oriental provides a truly wonderful experience. I love how this stuff smells in the tin. I love even more how it was when I lit it up. It truly is a tobacco that I reserve for my weekend Sunday laid back kind of time. I smoke it on a regular basis when I want a break from my blends that have latakia. Although I absolutely love latakia blends there are many times I desire to smoke a blend without it. For me this is it. As the picture on the tin shows--I HIGHLY recommend a pipe, and a tin of "Sunday Picnic" with your butt parked under a shade tree on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy a little relaxation. Take short easy puffs on your pipe with this stuff, and you will appreciate a mild tobacco that when lit up, and smoked slowly will allow you the pleasure of picking it apart as you smoke it. This is another tobacco that I keep at the top of my list of must smoke tobaccos.

I recently popped a 2018 tin that I found at a local B&M to give it a try.
There was a nice woosh from the tin when opening as well as a pleasant tin aroma. The moisture content was just a smidge high (I like tobacco on the dry side) so I took out some of the typical C&D broken flakes and let them sit out for probably 4 hours or so.
I picked a Nording Hunter Crocodile which is horn shape and have been smoking the bowls through it. The broken flake makes loading a breeze. I give it a good charring light, let it rest a few minutes and then give it a good light to get going.
I feel that the Golden VA leads the way along with the hints of the orientals which poke through in the background. The perique is there but does not overwhelm the other tobaccos. It's a consistent smoke which burns cool if not pushed and I'd rate at slightly lower than medium nicotine level. If I smoke bowls back to back then I def can feel it.
I read from Shane Ireland's review where Red Carpet is the same blend with Red VA subbed or the Golden, so I'm hoping to find a tin with some age on it to compare it to.
I picked up a couple more tins of picnic on sale and will forget about them for a few years in the C&D cellar tote until they get age on them which makes this one so good.

Conclusione 4,9/5

Similar to my experience with Bayou Morning: the special spice is too strong. In the case of Sunday Picnic, it's the Izmir. It's still a great flake but sometimes I wish it was toned down a bit. Recommended if you like turkish forward flakes!

A friend of mine gave me a nice sample of this at the last club meeting I attended. There is a spiciness in the tin note that reminds me of apple/cinnamon/clove potpourri. Not saying it is flavored with it but that is the closest smell my vocabulary can associate it with. This is a nice broken brown flake and smokes smooth and with a sweetness that I am not sure is the Izmir or if there is a top note on this one even though it says no flavoring. One other reviewer thought the same. If the sweetness in the smoke is Izmir then for me that is the dominant tobacco that I can make out with the rest in the background. The smoothness of this smoke is a real testimony to what I believe is quality leaf, maybe not on the McClelland scale but up there. I smoked all bowls of this in my CAO Meerschaum throughout the day and never got tired of it.

Craig Tarler responded to an email I sent him back in 2010 & thanked me for complimenting C & D on this Sunday Picnic blend & appreciated that I left a good review. I smoked both of my tins in less than a week. I think I became more addicted to the flavor than the tobacco itself. Try it! You'll like it. I couldn't possibly comprehend why a piper wouldn't like it.

I think this is one of the best VA/PER you can find in the market. Excellent taste, medium strength and a perfect nicotine content. No defects with a pleasant, satisfying and harmonious taste. Really enjoyable. Without any doubt this is a four stars blend but I give it only three stars because, in a hypothetical preference scale among VA/PER mixtures, in my opinion Robert McConnell - Old London Pebble Cut and Dunhill - De Luxe Navy Rolls are one step ahead. Anyway a great Perique mixture. So, in my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is more than 9 and three and a half stars.

Upon opening the can this tobacco has a very pleasing presentation . The flakes are soft , well cut and easy to pack in the bowl . There is little , if any , tin note . The problem is that there seems to be no taste at all . I read the other reviews and I cannot see where all this talk of flavor comes from . There is none , just smoke . Nothing else that I tasted . I might use this tobacco to mix with Samuel Gawith to bring down the moisture level and provide kindling .

I like Sunday Picnic a lot. It is dry tasting with hay-like golden Virginias in nice interplay with quite abundant, sour-tasting and tangy Izmir. Perique adds a well proportioned white pepper spiciness and although the tin note has the typical plum/figgy Perique fruitiness I do not sense any in the smoke. As I said it tastes dry, sour and spicy, has that sort of dusty taste of the Oriental tobacco with only traces of sweetness. Moreover if you sip a nice nuttiness comes through at times. Very good tobacco to use the "delayed gratification technique". Still I thought it would not appeal to so many smokers but I am surprised to see that it has – deservedly – very good reviews. I just did not think that so many people would like such a hard-core Oriental blend.
The flakes are soft and pliable, a little on the dry side but ready to just squeeze into the bowl for a nice, slow, cool, dry and natural tobacco tasting smoke to a powdery grey ash to the last shred. Room note is a little cigaretty, as is the taste admittedly. Really nice blend!

At first glance, I was attracted to the name Sunday Picnic, the sound of it, and also to the picture on the tin that seems to convey a jolly mood and a merry tune. And I bought it. I expected some gorgeousness in taste and note, but nothing gorgeous strikes me. SP failed my images. Yet, I was not disappointed with its contents.
The first kick is a rather sourish taste that asserts itself on the palate and a piquant smell that attacks the nostrils. Himalayan lemon and Penja black pepper. A nice mélange of Perique and Izmir. By the mid-bowl, the smoke gets silky mild, and the first arrogant sourness goes away, leaving a slightly stinging sensations in the nostrils and on the palate. I love this sharp tangy taste and high-key in note that SP provides. I am ready to buy one more tin. Next time I get one, I will leave it for a while as I think I need to let it age to relish its full-bodied SP, as some reviewers suggested (TX for Info).

This blend is very similar to a blend my Grandfather smoked years ago. The room note is sweet and tangy, with a linger of campfire mixed with prunes (very subtle). Im used to lots of stinkier tobacco blends and this was nice for me, my car mate today though didn't seem to like it (shes a non-smoker).
The flavor is very well blended, the VA poked its head out halfway through the bowl, after the second lighting. The flake was well humidified, and straight after opening I lit up, and was in love.
This is a VAPER that you will love, and its not terribly over bearing.
I hear a lot of the slight Nic kick people are getting, I wasn't affected.
Its about 85 deg and 90% humidity out today, and even so the blend still was calming and peaceful. I will be smoking this often and enjoying every bit of it. As soon as I let the tobacco age a bit and breathe, Ill update for sure.
The tin note is Prune/ Plum sweet with a bit of smoke.
Please note though! I was a bit weary of trying this blend after reading the reviews. I didn't want to have a Nic headache at work. Boy am I glad I tried it!
Please, never be afraid of trying something new. The worst that can happen is you don't like it, store it up and try again later down the road. Tobacco does change over time and who knows, maybe the once broken relationship flowers to be a wonderful romance.
Happy Smoking everyone!

Destined to be a HOF tobacco. Tin aroma is sweet and sour, with a slight mustiness. I opened this tin in 6/07 to age, and smoked a few bowls since. This flake is only getting better.
Packing and lighting can test your patience, however you will be rewarded with a sweet and tangy flavor that always pleases. The perique and Turkish add just the right undertones to this near perfect blend.
My advice: Stock up and cellar. 4 years of age has done this right.

Ahhh, Sunday afternoon. You in your pink sun hat and dress, me in my shirtsleeves, braces, and my floppy white hat. A lovely picnic is spread before us: fruit, a nice bottle of Sancerre, olives and cheese. Tenderly you feed me an olive as I smoke my pipe and we let the day go by sans souci.
"Do you like my orange roadster?" I ask.
"It's very sporty, dear," she replies, "although I didn't think you liked high- impact colors like orange."
"I've changed. You've changed me. I feel....so alive!"
Other reviewers have extolled the wonderful tin aroma of figs and grass; the room note is nothing to write home about; but the taste, while a little strong for a Sunday afternoon picnic in June, is delightfully spicy with a full mouth of tobacco flavor and is highly recommended.
"More wine, my dear?"

I don't care for this stuff. It's too spicy for me. I think I'm tasting some orientals? Whatever it is, it doesn't agree with me. Makes me sneeze like crazy and is just not what I look for in a tobacco. Tin smells like spicy Mexican candies when first opened, which is pretty cool. Too bad I didn't like it. I traded it to a friend for some Reiner Long Golden Flake (#71) which I very much prefer. The only person I would recommend this to is one who enjoys a SPICY smoke. Not for me. Try Reiner LGF instead, it's a superior VaPer.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying Sunday Picnic. It is a quality flake made from fine tobaccos. There was nothing actually bad about this unique blend. And it is unique, there not being another searched blend that shares the characteristics of perique, turkish and virginia but no latakia. It smoked almost identically from a cob, briars and a meer.
Here's what I thought was good about it: it demonstrates why every other blend of izmir and virginia has latakia. While it's interesting and flavorful at the top it lacks depth and dimension at the bottom to harmonize the stuff. It felt... stretched. It is like wearing a silk suit, silk tie and fine leather shoes without shirt and socks. According to the many 4-star ratings I am one of the few not hoping for more versions of this novel combination.

I tried this one last spring, and it was excellent. I smoked the tin in record time, but did not order more right away-there are lots of good tobaccos out there. I just got another tin (2 oz, sent to me in error when I ordered a pound, but the seller is correcting the mistake). It tastes, insofar as I can recall, just as good, maybe a little more sweetness to it, but the main difference is that while the first tin contained a perfectly molded flake along the lines of Erinmore (I love that style!), this is more of a semi-broken, easily rubbed out flake. Since Sunday Picnic is a four star tobacco for me in either form, this is not a big deal. I still prefer the formed flake just for aesthetic reasons. Lovely aroma in the tin and in the pipe, burns well whether sipped or puffed heavily, and a fine mixture of flavors with the high quality Virginia predominating. I'm going to enjoy my pound whatever form it arrives in-maybe I'll get lucky and get the perfect flake version! Highly recommended!

Beautiful flake when opening the can. Moist but crumbles nicely. The Izmir gives it a nice blend when added to the VA and perique. I like it for a Va-based tobacco. I still like more of a latakia punch but this blend is a nice change of pace. Will smoke this alongside Solani Yellow (and a new one I got but haven't tried yet...MacBaren's Navy Flake) to see which flake comes out ahead. For now, a nice smooth smoke that burns nicely.
Second review: Tried this blend on an almost empty stomach and found it to have a real nicotine punch. I liked it but still prefer some latakia. Recommend a small pipe that can give the flakes a nice burn without giving too much smoke at once.

I have become a fan of C&D blends since being introduced to them by a very good friend. My first C&D was Briar Fox and I was sold right from the first bowl.
I recieved a very generous sample from another friend in Canada ( people like sending me C&D blends it seems, im not complaining LOL) and it has been lying in my closet for a few months. I have been looking for something new to try and found this.
This is a classic example of a blend done RIGHT. The base tobacco is Virginia and the Turkish and Perique are there to support and enhance that wonderfull taste.
I found the taste to be creamy and delicious with enough VitN for this smoker. I could barely detect the Turkish and Perique which makes this a great blend as they are condimental parts.
C&D blends are very good and i enjoy them very much

I have to agree with the others that this is, if not the best, one of the best flakes I've ever smoked. What a surprise for buying this on a whim to try something new. I've smoked a variety of either straight Virginia or Virginia/Perique flakes for a number of years. The Oriental component perked up my senses. After smoking Sunday Picnic I was most encouraged how it perked up my taste buds. Most of the Virginia/Perique flakes I smoke have a considerable emphasis on the Perique. Good examples of this are Haddo's Delight and, another Cornell & Diehl blend, Bayou Morning (flake or regular). Perique plays very little part in Sunday Picnic. I don't detect a lot of it's presence. On lighting up, the immediate taste is the Golden Virginia. This lasts about a third of the way down. Then the Orientals seem to kick in for most of the smoke, with a little sweetness from the Virginia. I can taste a little Perique toward the bottom, but not much. It is so delicious that it doesn't matter. I like this in a medium sized bowl. However, in any case it never gets hot, smokes dry, and leaves me with the satisfaction that only my favorite blends (regardless of classification) leave me. I could smoke this all day. I think this is a bit more moist than the majority of blends from C&D. As I am becoming a real fan of Cornell & Diehl "dryness" this is not a problem. It rubs out easily, lights with vigor, and easily submits to my values of an all time classic smoke. I think I will add this into my regular rotation. A wonder to the flake community. Thank you, Cornell and Diehl! Thank you, Craig Tarler!

Tin note of stewed figs, vinegar, and sweet bread. The orange tinted yellows and brown broken flakes are not uniform as some flakes wider than others. Moisture is good, rubbing out is a snap and no drying needed. Burns somewhat slow with few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and fairly consistent, with notes of sweet grass, floral, lemon, dry herbs, bread, earth, mild wood, mild raisin, very mild tart stewed fruit, and a moderate peppery retro. Virginias are leading with Izmir supporting and perique providing backup. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is great.

The tin aroma was very pleasant with a dominant scent of Turkish Izmar. The color of the flake was a sort of grayish green. I prefer to smoke this tobacco a little dryer than I have other similar flakes. I prepared the leaf by rubbing it out fully and allowing to dry for well over an hour.
I felt the Nicotine content of this blend was fairly potent and allowed me to achieve a very pleasant nirvana smoke. It's very easy to get lost in a bowl of this stuff. I found myself very meditative and relaxed.
It burned very well due to my prep and was pleasant throughout the entire bowl.
I will surly buy this again!

The slightly broken flakes were easily folded, and just right to light, catching easily. The first impressions were of a pretty mild Oriental/VA blend, with no Perique coming through. As it progresses, however, the Oriental taste intensifies somewhat. This would probably be a good flake for those coming of off codger burleys looking for a non-lat Oriental blend to try, or perhaps light lat lovers looking for a non-lat summer blend.

I really enjoy C&D's flakes since they are pliable and yet not too flimsy. Its really nice to take some of these flake pieces out and smell them and rub out to my hearts content, the tin aroma is absolutely delicious to me. Sunday Picnic is a really nice Virginia Flake with a little extra condiments to add spice and perk the Red Virginia's up a little. The first half of the bowl is toasty and sweet, wonderful side stream aroma and very little heat. Second half the Izmir picks up strength and some of the sweetness fades. I am told the room note is nice and non offending. The bowl finishes with the Perique spicyness and toasted bread flavors that a great Virginia Flake can provide. Well done C&D and certainly worthy of 3 stars!

Sunday Picnic is sweet, tangy and has one heck of a nicotine hit. I went through the tin in just a couple days but I couldn't shake the strength. So strong, in fact, it takes away from some of the enjoyment. This may not really matter to many, but to me it would be even better if it was two clicks lighter in strength. Oh well, solid anyway. Maybe age will do it some justice. I currently have another six year old tin waiting for the right moment.
Update: Finished the old tin of this. Recommend.

3 year old tin. First opening the tin it smells heavily of fig, but it settles with airing out and drying into a very nice sweet tobacco smell similar to dried apricot. I do not think that these are added - this is natural tobacco and the changing aromas over time confirm that for me.
Very fluffy, moist flakes that need little rubbing out - they fluff out on their own, but need lots of drying.
Nice natural golden VA sweetness through the first 3/4 bowl with occasional hints of Perique. At the end of the bowl, a mellow Perique spiciness comes in with less sweet nuttiness. Didn't really notice the Izmir, although it probably blends in nicely and adds backbone to the high VA sweetness and earthy-spicy Perique.
Nicotine is not too strong here, just right for most times of day. This is one of my favorites and the quality leaf and blending is evident.

Sunday Picnic was an instant classic for me, becoming one of my all-time favorite blends! This is one of the most delicious & enjoyable tobaccos you'll ever find. Burns cool & even with a wonderfully mellow VA/Turkish sweetness. I can't get enough of this blend. Strangely, I find myself returning to this every Sunday afternoon... :-)

I was told more than once, as I absolutely love Exhausted Rooster, that I would love Sunday Picnic as well. I must admit that it surprised me a bit at first, considering that Exhausted Rooster is a VA - BU - DFK and Sunday Picnic, a VA - OR - PER... How could people compare these two totally different tobaccos? And assure me that I would love Sunday Picnic as well??? Anyway, after reflecting on these comments for a while, I finally decided to order a couple 2 oz tins of it so I could find out for myself. When I opened the tin last night, its aroma - oddly - somehow reminded me of ER, but in a much less pungent way. There was also faint raisin and hay undernotes. The colour of the flakes, though, is different. As where ER has medium brown with some darker leaf, SP displays a range from golden brown to very dark brown. SP is similar to ER in that, once the flakes are partially rubbed out, it smokes as slowly as ER. But SP has a very different taste than ER, there is no possible comparison between the two. SP reveals a combination of grassy/hay notes from the Golden VA, that becomes slightly sweet past half bowl; a spicy touch from the Izmir that remains throughout the bowl; and the peppery characteristic of the fermented PER that started showing up after the first quarter of the bowl. The Vitamine N dose, I must say, is more than satisfactory, making SP a very satisfying smoke. Don't puff too hard though, because it will then bite because of the fair proportion of Golden VA. I believe that, with a bit of aging, this flake will become very interesting in 2 or 3 years from now. So, you must be asking yourselves, does he love it, or not? Yes, I do! Not as much as ER, but the addition of some Izmir brings a new dimension to the classic mixture of VA with PER. ;-)

Great Cornell and Diehl product. I have to describe this tobacco in stages because it changed so quickly. Upon first opening the tin, I found moist golden brown to dark brown flakes. The tin smelled of rich tobacco. The smoke was straight forward single note tobacco taste, but pleasant and rich with a short finish. The room note reminded me of the Camel cigarettes my father smokes, except not as stale but tolerable. Sounds bad, I know. That was the Turkish blend dominating.
After just a few weeks the tin note smelled more of figs and a subtle smell of prunes. I would open the tin at times just to inhale the aroma. As a I smoked this 2 week old tin it had become more complex with a longer finish. Virginia tobaccos were in the forefront, the Turkish blended into the back for the finish with a touch of pepper from the Perique. It tasted of fruit, maybe fig or prunes and a subtle sweetness that wasn't there before.
A month later, It had changed again. I know, just a month. I couldn't place the tin aroma but then it struck me. It smelled like bread with a hint of dried fig. The smoke was now even more complex, smoother than before, and rich with flavors of leather, dried grass, wood, mild pepper, and a mildly sweet grassy long finish. Room note had not changed. If you like Va's this is worth a try.

Craig Tarler responded to an email I sent him shortly after this blend hit the market & thanked me for complimenting C & D on this Sunday Picnic blend & appreciated that I left a good review. I smoked both of my tins in less than a week and went back for more. I still love it to this day. I think it's a great value... less than thirty dollars for an 8 oz. tin. That was then, twenty-ten... that's how long that it's been & now, being almost 2019 is to quote the frog, "Time's fun when you're having flies." I think I became more addicted to the flavor than the tobacco itself. Try it! You'll like it. I couldn't possibly comprehend why a piper wouldn't like it.

Similar Blends: Tudor Castle seems fairly close but with Yenidje instead of Izmir... it's been a while & I'm more into VA/Pers, VA/Burs & Cuban seed cigars these days. This may seem far out but when I smoked this, I would think back into time when I had the opportunity to smoke a 100 dollar aged tin of Sullivan Powell's Gentleman's Mixture that took me to Valhalla for a little while but I eventually made it back to the real world in time for the next picnic.

This is a winning blend from C&D. Upon popping the tin, I got a subtle grassy VA aroma. The flakes are somewhat broken so I folded a few and started my charring light. I had to relight a few times so I decided to rub the flakes out for subsequent smokes and that worked very well. The taste is sweet and savory on the palate with no hint of tongue bite or any bitterness. Give Sunday Picnic a go if you are searching for a world class VA/PER with well balanced Izmir Turkish as a condiment.

This one is one of the best blends I've tried so far in this year. The tin aroma is robust and inviting at first seen. The Izmir leaf is spicy as usual and much enjoyable. Perique adds a great and echilibrated strongness to the blend. Smokes cool, burns very well. This rich and complex blend offers sometimes a fig like aroma, in another bowl of smoke you'll enjoy the fine, spicey oriental, and sometimes the sweet Virginias. A must try for all spicey/sweet blend lovers.

Quite a powerful smoke! One of the first VaPers I've tried and I'm quite impressed. Sometimes I make the mistake of packing a bowl of this when I'm not willing to take the time to relax with it. It has quite the tongue bite if you get too hasty, which I have a habit of doing sometimes. All in all it's a pleasant smoke and the tobacco is a very nice consistency for packing/lighting/etc. A little wet out of the tin, though. This is my first flake and I look forward to many more in my future! Certainly this will remain a favorite.

The main difference in this blend from other VAPER's in general is the way the Turkish plays a definite role in the balance of this blend and the way you can play with the strenght of the perique in particular by rubbing it or stuffing it in the pipe as is.I know this sounds funny but stuffed the perique was strong as to make me sneeze a lot while rubbed it was smoother. So i played with it until i found i prefered one stuffed flake with a crumbled one on top of it to be the most satisfying way for me .This is something i didn't encountered in other VAPER's.
A Great smelling, tasting, smoking flake which has now his own place in my cellar.

This is good stuff. Upon opening the tin, I got the usual aromas of aged and fermented Virginias: definite aromas of ripe raisins and figs. But there was another aroma I can't put my finger on. I'm assuming its the odor of fermenting Perique and Izmir. I'll pay attention to other similar blends and see if I detect the same aroma. But regardless of what exactly it is, it's rich and complex just as I like it. Upon initial lighting, the taste of the Virginias is noticeable like you would expect. But about a third of the way into the bowl, I start to get a definite taste that is very much like that elusive aroma from the tin. I can only assume that it's the combination of the Perique and Izmir. Again, this taste is something I like very much.

Sunday Picnic is a complex smoke that sometimes behaves as a spiced VaPer and sometimes as a toned-down oriental. Sweet and subtle, with no tongue bite and even burning for a delightful experience.
The only drawback I've found, and it's probably very personal and subjetive, it's a lack of consistency among different pipes. While some of them delivered a deep and subtle smoke, others felt just bland and dull. But all in a all is a great mixture that deserves being tried.

Good clean, nutty scent when opening the tin. Not too strong, sort of reminds me of pecan trees. This was my first experience with flake tobacco that has be cut in strips. Tobacco was slightly moist and very fresh out of the tin. I like this moisture level and did not dry or air at all before smoking.
Strips were a little tough to roll and loosen compared to my standard MB Burley. I packed this a little too tightly in my bowl (a Lorenzo Bent) and had to loosen with my tool before lighting. First light to char, then tamped down lightly.
Nutty, smooth smoke and burned evenly. About 1/2 the way through the bowl I tamped and relit. Smooth, pleasant smoke with no bite. I found it much milder than my MB Burley.
A good smoke that I will keep in my rotation and recommend to others. This one is especially good for new pipe smokers.

Oh my! One could picnic every day with this blend. The sweetness of VA, the tartness of Perique & the mildness of Turkish leaf meld together to form a very satisfying smoke. Glad I bought two tins. Contents are plug slices and packaged like little bacon strips. Sorry I can't describe the tin aroma, but it is similar to that of other VA/Per blends with a little something extra. Tart, tangy...a bit musty. Dried it out to proper smoking moisture, rolled it, stoked, puffed a few times and let it sit a short while. This DGT...Delayed Gratification Technique works well with this VA blend as it seems to with all VA blends. Smoked cool & didn't bite. Nicotine content seemed just right for me & I feel it would satisfy anyone striving for that satisfying, end result. My compliments to the "chef." This blend will certainly be one of my mainstays as well as for cellaring. Looking forward to what develops with a little age. It's obvious that quality leaf was used & a good blend like this is certain to become better with age...maybe even legendary? Only time will tell. I'm looking forward to sampling other C&D blends. This one is a "Grand Slam" and therefore, IMHO, Sunday Picnic merits four **s+!

I consider this a truly "Elegant Experience" in pipe smoking pleasure. A must try for the Va/Per lover dosed in the proper proportions.

I don't usually smoke Per blends, so I was overwhelmed by the spiciness. but I found that it can add a pleasant note blended about 20% into milder english blends (like the English Luxury), which I prefer. For those of us geezers old enough, and lucky enough, to have known Barry Levin and his Turkish Woods Flake, this wonderful Golden Virginia flake is a blast from the past.
A wee bit damp out of the tin, but no effort to dry to perfect condition for the bowl (pipe, not toilet or salad). A light touch in the loading phase and in tamping, and you are rewarded with a sweet, tangy, smooth Virginia journey with the Turkish leaf sticking its nose in where it belongs. Boy, does it belong! The Perique performs nicely as a bite retardant, but doesn't assert or insert itself where it's not welcome...just a wee tickle here and there...no bayou blast, no "BAM" or other over the top blessings by St. James. Just perfect seasoning.
I bought a few pounds to cellar, but they were, once again, destroyed by a tragic fire. Mostly in a HUGE Upshall Canadian. "If at first you don't succeed" and all that other advice....

You don't have to wait for Sunday to try these nicely prepared flakes. Although moister than my preference from the tin, with modest drying, a cool, dry smoke without any bite resulted. The sweet Golden VAs were complemented but not overpowered by the Turkish as the smoke progressed past mid bowl. I missed the Perique but most of the VA/Pers that I smoke are more heavily loaded and this was a nice change. Give it try.

After decideing to try some offerings from C&D I bought 6 of thier Va. blends. There was not a bad one in the lot. Briar Fox is wonderful..........a favorite now. Sunday Picnic is every bit as good. Upon opening the tin of SP I am met with a wonderful light sweet aroma. The tobacco is a little moist for my taste. After a little drying time, and a full rub out I find that this blend packs, lights, and smokes GREAT! It has become one of my TOP 5 blends. I bought 8 tins to consume now and to cellar. The only problem I have had so far with this fine blend is leaving it in the cellar to age......I may never know if cellaring will improve this already superb blend. Oh well...such is life. Rate

This is by far the best flake I have ever smoked! The perque gives just enough zest but does not over power the smoke . this is a cool dry smoke but never got hot stayed mild I love this blend and will keep planty on hand .I Highly recomend this to one and all.

=See my review of Interlude for Tin and insert review.= This one is by far my favorite of the flakes I have tried. First, they seem to hold their shape in the tin. These present a pretty Gold Flake, and the smell of sweet grassy hay comes out. Fold and stuff again.....On light, there is that Fresh cut sweet hay smell and flavor.....there is a light spice, like a hint of spiced figs mixed in. The strength is not as powerful here as interlude, but it's easier on the taste buds. More comfortable smoke. Like a mystery movie vs Interludes Action. Again I did two flakes at a time, and it lasted about 2 hours. Burned clean and tasted great. Of the three I have tried, this is my favorite.
