Boswell Pipes & Tobacco Boswell's Premium Burley

(3.25)
2 burleys and a touch of black cavendish. Slow and clean burning with a good room note.
Notes: Created by J.M. April 2007 - A carefully balanced blend creating a mild but full bodied flavor. A Kentucky burley ripened to the fullest flavor. This is a winner for our customers; no other burley like it!

The burleys have some earth, nuts, and light molasses. There is a vanilla black cavendish accent, and slight honey and cocoa notes that likely come from toppings. The toppings are light, and mildly tone down the burleys. No real complexity to speak of, and it's very light on nicotine. Won't bite or get harsh. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean. The very consistent flavor, after taste and room notes are very pleasing. A tasty and efficient all day smoke that's very easy on the nerves.

I found this to be an excellent burley blend. Gives you that nice burley touch of earthiness but is yet comforted by a subtle sweet tone from time to time. A great kick back and relax tobacco. The hint of flavoring doesn't distract you in any way. It's like it was meant to be a part of the tobacco itself. Nicely blended. Great nuance to make this a truly enjoyable smoke. If you're not sure about burley or your looking to check one out, I would definitely recommend making this a clear choice. Probably my favorite burley based tobacco thus far. Boswells does a great job on so many of their blends and this simply is just another gem.

Very nice mild burley with a hint of casing which adds a vanilla sweetness. I don't much like getting a nicotine buzz so this fits the bill nicely. Any nicotine presence comes toward the end of the pipe.

I find that this tobacco is too moist (perhaps from the addition of humectants?) which causes a flat steamy spot during the middle of the bowl. To remedy this I have dried it out and then added about 1/4 Uhle's Perfections Plug Burley, or Uhle's Blend 00. These Uhle burleys add some needed burley punch and mitigate the vanilla sweetness a bit. If smoked slowly, a nice nutty burley flavor emerges which is consistant to the bottom of the bowl. However, it has not stayed in my rotation

This is an aromatic, but it's done well. In the jar the smell of the topping was heavy. Almost like marshmallow. It made me worry a bit because I'm not a huge aromatic fan. 90% of the smokes flavor is the topping but it's nice. It has a flavored coffee taste, maybe hazelnut or French Vanilla that goes perfect with a nutty burley. Burns very nice and dry in my cob. Not bad at all.

Tin note is toasty Burley and sweet black Cavendish. I do not pick up any topping although the sweetness may be from a very subtle topping. Boswell does the best job in the business with casings and toppings IMHO. This is a very straight forward blend, not a pensive complex, rubic's cube blend. A good honest Burley that tastes of wood and earth. There is a hint of cocoa and the Cavendish rounds out the smoke, softens the Burley and provides some nice sweetness. This is not a flavor powerhouse so if that is what you are looking for this isn't it. Light on vitamin N and I found it to be great as a first smoke of the day with coffee (sweet with milk and sugar or a fancy flavored blend). Burns easy with few, if any relights.

Opening my jar of 1 year 8 month old Boswell's Premium Burley revealed dull matt brown ribbons with a few black flecks scattered throughout. It felt silky to the touch and a bit dry like I like it. The smell of a sweet milk chocolate comes through initially and a deeper sniff brings a light nuttiness.

An unlit sip brought hardly anything to the palate, but every so often I thought I tasted a faint cocoa before the light. The charring light brought a bit of the nuttiness of the burley, and occasionally a light floral sweetness. Overall in small bowls, this blend reminded me of a certain famous chocolate syrup, in bigger bowls a borderline bitter dark chocolate taste came through. Either way it was a pretty good breakfast blend and was great with the bitter coffee I like. It was definitely slow and clean burning like the description on Boswell's website. The finish was very short leaving a slight sweet dark cocoa taste on the tongue. The room note was pretty pleasant and toasty, though I only smelled it when getting in my vehicle on a cold night after smoking in it on breaks and during lunch.

This was an okay blend, nothing to get real excited about from what I could tell. I liked that it didn't scorch my tongue at all, and that it didn't overly sweeten my palate like some Cavendish blends tend to do. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light, clean, and easy aromatic.

I’ve ordered this twice now, because it is something I like to keep on hand as a blender (usually to help tame overly aggressive beasts). Both times I didn’t see visual evidence of much black Cavendish, so the sweetness derives mostly from the fully ripened Kentucky Burley itself. The tempering sauce probably had extra sugar and perhaps some butternut flavoring to emphasize the inherent character of this particular Burley. You realize these things if you compare against something minimally processed like Wessex Burley Slice. This is apparent especially when you set flame to the tobacco, when the extra sugars combust. But rest assured, once the lighting is over and you’ve settled into a nice relaxed cadence, this is perfectly smooth and without bite.

The honey and vanilla are very subtle here, I get more nutty tones. The nutty flavors show up as specifically cashew butter and hazelnut cream on my tasting wheel (a carry-over from the specialty coffee reviews I’ve done). As a solo player it’s pleasant enough, but a bit one-dimensional for me. A perfect codger smoke, I’d say. No question it is a smooth and relaxing smoke which leaves a pleasing ambient aroma (that would be the room note for those of you who smoke indoors). Seems to work its best magic in an old Medico Gothic, but I’ve never had an unpleasant smoke in any pipe. Just about time to order some more!

First let me say burly blends are not a big hit for me. This blend is very pleasing to the palate and the nose. Taste is very mild but pleasing. Burns pretty cool and leaves a nice white ash to the bottom of the bowl. If your a burley fan you should really like this blend.

When you buy a pipe from Boswell they give you a sample of tobacco for free. When I described to Dan what I liked and asked him to recommend something, this is what he gave me. GOOD CALL! Opening the bag I pick up a great sweetness and the chocolate others noted. The nuttiness comes through ever so slightly as does a coffee scent. The sweetness does not come through the pipe though. I wish it tasted a bit more sweet than it does- especially with such a great smell in the pouch. That said- I asked for something more natural tasting but still with a great room note- Dan really nailed this based on what I asked for!

I tend to lean towards aromatics but I like some natural flavors as well. The burley in here is so mild and smooth with no bite, no nasty flavor, no harsh relights. From that standpoint this gets a 4 of 4. The Cavendish adds a great hint of sweetness that's great in the room note but like I said isn't quite as strong in the taste. And while it comes through in the taste, I like a little more sweetness.

That said, this really is a great blend. It's probably deserving of a 4 star review honestly, but it's not quite getting it from me... I'd say 3.5 stars for sure. If you're an aromatic smoker looking to step away from the overly sweet and to something a little more natural, this is the right blend for you!

I definitely like this blend. Mild, slightly sweet, easy packing, not too much of anything, very nice if you like burleys. I do like to blend it with Boswell's Main St. Burley, they even each other out very nicely to make a great burley blend.
