If you smoke this straight, you'll find it rather bitter and harsh with no sweetness, with a woody, earthy flavor. It's also a little nutty with a mild hint of cedar. On its own, the negative aspects may not work for the average smoker. As a mixer -which it is designed to be -it can be used to good effect, as many blends with white burley can attest. That's the real reason to buy this. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is almost medium. Burns clean at a reasonable pace with a very consistent flavor that translates to the long lingering after taste and potent room note. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. I give it two and half stars as a mixer. As for smoking it straight, one star is plenty.

I was gifted several ounces of this. It came very dry, and I have been packing it somewhat firmly and breathing through the bowl - John Patton style - to hydrate it a little. The tobacco is a light tan. It is mostly a chopped medium-wide ribbon with a few irregular bits and fish flake. Pouch note is slightly earthy.

I have been smoking this straight. It is a medium-mild in terms of strength, and it is slightly sweet and woody with some sour and a little bitter if puffed. It may be the power of suggestion from having read other reviews, but I did get a cedar note or two. It is somewhat light in terms of mouth feel with none of the earthiness or mellow fullness you expect in a burley. I found it to be a pleasant but not very exciting smoke.

Flavor was fairly consistent, and it burned well. Keeping it on the edge of the sour and bitter gave a good flavor and smoking experience.

This was good but not great. It is a 2.5 on the recommendation scale. I could smoke it all the time if it was what I had. I am not likely to buy more, but I have no regrets, and it will not be a chore to smoke it up.

Cornell & Diehl - White Burley.

Some 'blending' tobaccos make an enjoyable smoke on there own. Others don't. This is one that needs to be used as intended!

As you can identify from the picture here, it's a well rubbed, medium brown, un-twiggy, ribbon. Unfortunately mine was dry.

Smoked straight, it gives a harsh, unsweet, slightly, bitter, flavour. Sure, as with most Burleys, there's a rugged, nutty, characteristic, but this is indolent in comparison to the caustic leading attribute. In all fairness, the initial few minutes have a 'truer' Burley flavour, but this dissipates quickly. It burns too warm and too quick; so, don't smoke it on its own.

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: not pleasant.

White Burley? Hmmmm, not good. But, as it's designed to mix it gets a 'benefit of the doubt' result. Somewhat recommended:

Two stars.

White Burley offers a little jar note that is earthy but not much else really comes forward. The taste is very woody, slightly nutty and earthy and over the top bitter. Puffing will make it harsh but even when hot it did not bite all that much. I too note a hint of cedar which seems odd but is there. Straight I had to use a smaller bowl as the bitterness was simply too much but it was not really intended for straight smoking. Blending makes it smoother and it does add a little woodsy nuttiness to VA's. The strength overall is at the upper end of mild to med as is the nic. Not enough there to satisfy in a smaller bowl but noticeable. There is just not enough going on to add to another order and as a blender while fine overall, it is not strong enough to punch up a lighter blend. No need to repeat for me personally.

I am reviewing several C+D blending tobaccos as a precursor to some blending experiments. I know not many people blend, but these reviews may provide some hints to those wanting to do so.

Definitely the blending base of the lot. This tobacco is very bland and seems to have strength primarily in burning characteristic - very cool and no bite. Just a slight almost cedar like flavor and aroma.

Pleasantly nutty, uncomplex, a tiny bit bitter and/or sour? Barely detecting any sweetness. Not much here, but it's not terrible. I could see smoking a small bowl while trying to decide what I really want to smoke. May have merit as a canvas for stronger flavors?

I bought this to try to get what white burley brings to a burley blend .What I have discovered smoking this by itself is that white burley has almost no flavor . A slight nuttiness and I don’t get any cocoa at all . I bought it to blend though and obviously that’s what is is for . I guess it softens dark burley spice down . Burleys definitely need Virginias to bring out the flavor and nuttiness.
